We are all impatient for information on Johnson's trilogy, and that's very natural and a good thing, but we mustn't loose sight of enormous amount of work this is going to be. I for one am glad that Johnson & his people are taking their time with this, with shaping an entirely new 3-movie arc for Star Wars, heading (we assume) into places, plots, characters, dramas, and tropes entirely new for the franchise. This will not be about just throwing together a few movies set in the SW universe.

It is a momentous task that Johnson has taken on and it will likely take up at least a decade of his creative life from conceptualization to finished product (even more if he ends up directing them all and working closely with filming the latter installments). After a couple of years of thinking about Star Wars, it took George Lucas four years to write, make, and release ANH, and Johnson's task is at least as difficult/daunting as Lucas' was (since Johnson writes within an already established universe while Lucas could pretty much do whatever he liked). Going by that schedule, and assuming Johnson will start writing sometime around January next year (47 years after Lucas began his work), after a two months break following the release of Knives Out, we might expect the first movie of his trilogy to be released sometime in 2024.

Furthermore, we can't expect to learn much new about the trilogy till way into its writing/post-production, if even then. There's nothing to report at this point... I can't think of a single ting that Iger, Kennedy, Johnson, or whoever could possibly share at this point. Do we ask them to reaffirm every couple of months that "yes, Johnson's trilogy is moving forward he's X pages into the first draft now"? Had there been nothing else going on in Star Wars, we could possibly expect to follow the production closely, with some concept art and whatnot released every few months (although even that would be years from now), however, with loads of other SW planned and in production, it is unlikely that Lucasfilm will start building hype for Johnson's trilogy until perhaps a year or so prior to the release of the first film. In the meantime, it is far more likely we'll get information on the numerous shows in production (and additional anthology movies, I hope), than non-content updates on Johnson's films.

In conclusion, there is nothing to report at this point; even writing hasn't officially begun on the project (although Johnson & Co are of course discussing and researching the trilogy behind the scenes). We will learn more when there is more to learn and if we're really lucky, Johnson might show up and give us a couple of vague ideas he's working on at Star Wars Celebration (although I actually think that's a bad idea as even if they explicitly state "these are some ideas and concepts we're currently considering", the fanbase are likely to grasp onto such news and treat it as canon).

I absolutely can't wait for this to happen. Though I expect that the films will have 3 years break in between due to RJ needing to focus on each of them individually and it'll be pretty hard to juggle one film's post production and the other's pre-production and going into production. I hope Lucasfilm take their time, RJ and KK too! They're in for a long ride and a commitment that will pay off in the end.

I would really prefer Kathleen Kennedy to stay onboard until this trilogy and B&W's to end before retiring but it's completely up to her. Everyone's growing older by the day but I would love to see the films being produced by her with the vision shared by the company of talented people contributing to Star Wars.

I don't know... that feels like a long time between episodes! Of course, it's no different to what Lucas did, but I kind of expect the turnaround to be a bit quicker now. I also got the impression that RJ will only be focusing on the first of the three episodes, and then will just be overseeing the next two, so his involvement won't be as intense throughout.

I originally also wondered if they were going to be streaming service movies, but Disney seemed to have ruled that out.

Will it be one every two years I wonder, with the B&W trilogy episodes in the intervening years? I can't help thinking that could be a bit confusing though.

I am curious how they are going to 'juggle' the two trilogies. If they went back to doing just one SW film every three years, then one of the trilogies is a long way off yet!

I agree. Movies nowadays are much more complicated, at every step of the pre-production, production, and post-production than what they were back in OT times, and I believe a 3 year period between Johnson films is quite likely indeed. Of course, if Johnson ends up "only" writing the trilogy and directing the first one, things might look very different -- if so, we might get a 5-year period between writing and the first episode's release, followed by a 1-2 year break between episodes, but that remains to be seen. Johnson did mention his intention to only direct the first one, but its much to early to say at this point (and I for one hope he stays with his vision from start to finish).

    Thinking out loud...

With the end of the PT just weeks away, it will be very interesting to see what the future of Star Wars hold. Once LFL has ended their run of the Skywalker Saga, with related stories to boot, I am sure they will go all in for something completely different. Not Rey or whomever's descendants X generations into the future, or Palpatine's coming-of-age, or anything like that; no, the next big stage will be something altogether different, I am sure.

All the mileage that Disney has gotten out of Star Wars thus far has been in reflection/tied to the OT, and we'll still get some such stories in the foreseeable future (with Cassian, Kenobi, and The Mandalorian being obvious examples), but from ROS onwards the focus with Star Wars, I predict, is going to move squarely away from the shadow of the OT and into the dawn of "the second phase of Star Wars", or whatever one would like to call it.

Just think about it: The PT is beholden to the OT, as is the ST. Rogue One definitelly is beholden to OT, as is Solo:ASWS. Rebels & Clone Wars are another set of prequels to the OT, while Resistance is a prequel to the ST (and therefore bound to the OT). Kenobi & Cassian will function as bridges between the PT & OT, while The Mandalorian bridges the OT & St. EVERYTHING comes back to those three old films at the heart of Star Wars, and I bet Disney/LFL are looking very hard at opening up a completely different side to Star Wars, which is exactly why they wanted Johnson to helm a new project that avoids ties to the OT in the first place.

It's a frightening prospect, to soon-ish get Star Wars that has nothing to do with Luke, Leia, & Han, or related to them and their story in some way... To get a Star Wars with a totally different heart to it, a heart that isn't the OT. And I shan't lie; I am afraid. At the same time, I am completely confident in LFL's abilities, especially with Johnson on the team, and I'm convinced they will come up with some pretty great stuff! That said, will it be for me? This is of course impossible to answer at the present time.

So what can we surmise/guestimate about NuStar Wars? Well, it pretty much has to have war in it, right? And there will be a struggle of good vs. evil in some way. We will definitely have mysticism in some fashion, although I doubt we'll be getting a can't-believe-they're-not-jedi type group to face off against sith-like machinations... No, the mysticism we'll be treated to will probably have a different slant or function, somehow. And it's gonna be space western, right? Actually, that's one prediction I am NOT at ALL certain of. I think we could very well go in a completely different direction, like space piracy (I want Black Sails in Space!), straight-up war stuff, space Dickensianism/social drama (we got a taste of street urchin life in Solo, for instance), or something else entirely. But whatever genre and style NuStar Wars will be, it HAS to keep adventure and sweeping drama at its core, with silly monsters and cute/camp and epic villains and fairy tail-ness, for it to remain "Star Wars", right?

In short, we have no idea what NuStar Wars is going to be like, and that both excites and scares me :)

I'm with you in that the future of Star Wars scares and excites me. I think it is safe to say I'm more on the scared side than excited side, but definitely both are there.

I honestly think they won't immediately stray too far off the script so to speak. First, as you mention, we have 3 series on Disney Plus which will be tied into the Original Trilogy. Will they use the films to veer off and do different things? Of course I have no darn idea. None. Zero. But, I suspect they won't go into the future beyond IX (unless its a mega hit). Perhaps go back in time to the origins of the Jedi? The Sith vs Jedi conflict?

Who knows? That is, as you put it, both exciting and scary as all get out.

I wouldn't be too worried, Star Wars will likely outlive us all.

She did't say they "were done" with trilogies.

    Here's the full context:

The next “Star Wars” film is expected to arrive in 2022, and that’s essentially all that’s known about it. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has an idea for a “Star Wars” movie, but it’s in the early stages, according to Kennedy. Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed “The Last Jedi,” is also developing more “Star Wars” films.

Kennedy said she plans to make key decisions about the direction of the franchise in the coming weeks. But some things she already knows. While the “Skywalker” saga is ending, the company won’t abandon the characters created in the most recent trilogy. Additionally, she said, the plan is to move beyond trilogies, which can be restricting.

“I think it gives us a more open-ended view of storytelling and doesn’t lock us into this three-act structure,” she said. “We’re not going to have some finite number and fit it into a box. We’re really going to let the story dictate that.

If anything this could mean more or less Rian Johnson films in his series.

Thank you for this. I should have thought more about what I was saying before typing  Maybe his "trilogy" could be two movies instead. Or maybe five? It could be whatever the story requires.

That's a good point that Rian's movies have always been referred to as a trilogy and now we are hearing "no more trilogies", but to say Rian is out is major stretch in my opinion. The point of that interview to me was that Kathleen Kennedy is looking to give directors more creative vision for what they want to do in the Star Wars universe. Rian, or any other director, does not need to be tied to a 3 movie structure.

Edit: Oops, look like this has been covered already. I should have read to the end before replying!

It's a bit more... complicated is perhaps the thing to take. KK states they are going to "move beyond" the idea of a trilogy structure and not be beholden that. But, as for Rian Johnson, note that is the reporter saying "he is developing" more Star Wars films. Well of course he is, because nothing official has been said. But the reporter saying he is doing it isn't evidence that he is, nor is it evidence that he isn't. Remember, Rian himself mentioned LFL was still figuring out their schedule.

As you note at the end, this could mean anything. More Rian, less Rian, Rian only directing... Who the heck knows?

ON a side topic, I saw Knives Out over the weekend. I enjoyed it, even if it's not really my cup of tea. I will say what I've said a million times before, I think he's better doing his own thing. I loved Looper. Brick was good. I see it kind of like Quentin Tarantino or Martin Scorsese. Fantastic film makers each one of them but I don't think they are fit for writing and directing Star Wars.

There's no way Rian will ever get the chance to make Star Wars movies! In fact, in the multiverse with an infinite number of parallel worlds where every conceivable reality plays out - none of them has a world where Rian Johnson makes another Star Wars movie!

I don't think he should continue with star wars. He's a fantastic film maker but he's too 'art house' or 'cerebral'. While this gave us some incredible moments in TLJ, upon reflection it stands out as 'not feeling like' a SW movie. He's not popcorn enough lol, too Ang Lee and not enough Wachowskis. Neither of which I'd recommend lol.

I'd prefer (after having watched mandalorian) seeing what david filoni and/or Jon Favreau could do with a bigger project.

I'd also like to see the source material explored more in a TV series format. I think in today's market, the epic nature of Star Wars translates better into a TV series than a movie. It would also allow for a lot more exposition, which could help lay the groundwork for future movie titles. Ie the mandalorian could assist in setting up the story for a KOTOR series of films. A good 2-3 seasons of a high quality TV series could do alot to lay the ground work for the new EU and explain the finer points of SW lore to the more casual fan.

So I'm sorry Rian but for me your out and Netflix (well Disney+) your in.

I wholeheartedly disagree here. Star Wars needs to expand and grow, to move out of the OT mold and embrace a greater range of stories and premises, and Johnson will be perferct for such a task. He has vision, skill, a superb grasp of film language, and a great rapport with his actors, and that is exactly what is needed to move Star Wars into new directions.

I also think that an Old Republic/Sith Wars/can't-believe-it's-not-a-KOTOR-rehash story would be much better suited for TV than for films. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to support in in the theater either.

I’m hopeful he’ll do more. With not being bound to another’s opening film, he has more freedom. He could be good for a deeper perspective into the Force. His stance on that was beautiful, and despite how people felt on Luke himself, the Luke/Rey/Kylo stuff was often held, at least from what I saw, as the best parts of his film, even by those that disliked the film. He did a good character growth piece, and I’m curious to see what he’ll do with new characters of his own.

The best part of the entire trilogy were moments in The Last Jedi. When I look back at this trilogy TFA and TLJ will stand out the most. JJ created some great characters and Rian Johnson created some fantastic moments. If The Last Jedi's isn't Star Wars then I guess I'm not a Star Wars fan anymore.

Hey I'm not bashing the guy or saying he isn't capable because he most definately is, I just don't think he is a great fit for star wars. I think in TLJ he tried to be a bit too 'clever' (for lack of a better word). In parts it came off, however where it didn't I felt as though we lost the magic and irreveverence that is quintessentially star wars.

Also ALOT of the humour in TLJ fell flat, very flat. I'm not saying JJ is the better director but the humour in his films were far superior.

Altogether I'd say you need someone who embodies both of their strengths; Rians creativity and directorial flair blended with JJ's affinity for the source material and his ability to harness that star wars feel and tone (which in fairness I think he nailed).
