In a recent interview between Collider's Steve Weintraub and writer Ronald D. Moore (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: First Contact), the former took the chance to ask him about his involvement in the scrapped live-action TV series Star Wars: Underworld.

Apparently, George Lucas had assembled several writers from all over the world and told them to write the entire series even before he started thinking about production. This is what Moore had to say:

It's interesting to note that Lucas wanted to have all 48 scripts before they even began planning the show, so they didn't have many budget constraints. Moore had this to say about that:

It is also worth noting that George Lucas was thinking about the entire storyline, not the first 48 scripts:

This project sounds fascinating to me, and it is the proof, once again, that George Lucas was always ten years ahead of everyone else in terms of visual effects and technology, but also in storytelling. Not only was this TV series being planned in a pre-Game of Thrones world, but it sounds like Lucas was already thinking about it the way HBO started thinking about Game of Thrones around season 3, in a cinematic way rather than just TV.

It would have been the first Star Wars live-action show, almost ten years before The Mandalorian, but also it would have been one of the first big TV productions that have now taken over, most notably with Game of Thrones, but also with Stranger Things, Watchmen, Westworld, and obviously The Mandalorian, and all Marvel shows for Disney+.

If you are curious about Star Wars: Underworld, you might want to check out this test footage that was released in January:

I remember hearing the news and rumors about this some time ago, and it seemed like a brilliant idea then.
As much as I doubt it, I would love it if Lucasfilm will turn this into a series or two for Disney+.

That would be awesome. I'm biased toward it but I'd love a Star Wars show that leaned into a more Cyberpunk vibe. :)

What's interesting, is I think a lot of the stuff from the show is canon in various forms. Probably the biggest is Underworld was going to show how Lando lost the Falcon; which we saw pan out in Solo (duh).

"It was going to tell the story of a different part of the
Star Wars universe that you didn't exactly know, and then it was going to slowly fold back into the characters that you knew and loved."

    Doesn't that sound like Mando?

Gosh, I forgot how much they were planning on to do on the series. I got bits of Rogue One, definitely SOLO, and some of the themes the comics have been pulling from.

I would have loved to see that show...
