The Last Jedi novel opened with a memorial service for Han Solo. I've yet to read it but am intrigued to buy the novel.

Heres a summary of the memorial:

A lot of fans expected to see Han Solo’s funeral in The Last Jedi, but it did not happen. However, it’s there in the novel. The funeral takes place right at the beginning before the Resistance begins evacuating D’Qar; so if the scene were in the movie, it would be the very start of the film. Admiral Ackbar informs Leia of Han Solo’s death, and she subsequently holds a brief memorial in the forest.

During this ceremony, Leia has a wooden figurine that she places on the ground; it’s something Han carved before the Battle of Endor. Leia delivers a few words about how Han would hate this ceremony because he had no patience for speeches or memorials. She remembers him as a brave man who always hated bullies and was not afraid to stand up to them, including during his youth on Corellia — something that could come up in Solo: A Star Wars Story. And she says that even though Han fancied himself a scoundrel, he wasn’t, and he was always willing to fight for freedom."

    (Reference: https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertai...-revealed-by-the-last-jedi-novelization.html/)

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with what Leia said and do you think this should have been featured in the film?

TLJ should of had a time jump but the ending of Episode 7 didn't allow that to happen. A memorial service would be nice but it would of been out of place with the events of TLJ. I do think they should of had a short memorial service at the end of 7 like they did with Episode 1 and 6 instead of leaving us a clifhanger that didn't allow any time jumps.

    No.
Unless the goal is to show Kylo Ren observing this memorial somehow to imply his regret and potential for being saved, it would be entirely for the fans.
They didn't show anything for Ben. Or Alderaan. Or the New Republic. Unless I'm mistaken, did they ever show a funeral or memorial in a Star War movie?
I don't recall any. But I could easily just be forgetting something from the PT.

Luke's funeral for Anakin in RotJ, and Qui-Gon's in TPM. And Padme's in RotS, which was probably the most "traditional" one we've seen, in our sense of the word at least. Overall, more than I thought actually.

I am okay with not seeing a funeral for Han... but I would have liked to have seen Kylo Ren struggling with his actions somehow.

Qui Gon had a funeral at the end of TPM. Other than that I believe that's it. Unless you wanna count Luke burning Vaders body at the end of Ep 6, which didnt seem like a funeral really

Wow you're right i forgot about Padme's huge funeral. It was short but so sad, seeing her family and Jar Jar and all the Naboo citizens attending

Vader's funeral felt more like hiding the evidence to me than an actual funeral.
And those were all to END films. Not start them off. If they were going to have one it should have been in TFA it sounds like

Well, you can't ID that face as Anakin SKYWALKER if he's burned up to a crisp....again

We also had a funeral for Shmi in Episode 2.

And in Solo, Tobias memorialized his partners with 2 stones in the snow. So kinda a memorial

I'm also okay with not seeing a funeral service, and I think they would have been better served by doing a time jump. Heck, they SHOULD have planned this whole thing out so that 1. TFA didn't come out in 2015, and thus JJ would have had more time to craft the script (say release it in 2017) and that would have meant they could have had a film or two that built up to TFA. Kind of like they had 3-4 films build up towards the Avengers. Then they could have scheduled TLJ to come out in say 2020 and have had a film or two which detailed the time in between, one of which could certainly have had that funeral.

But we didn't get that. Iger insisted on pushing for films starting in 2015. So perhaps a funeral service should have taken place at the end of TFA. I don't know. We can analyze it to death (I'm sure I have). I will say this: to some extent, perhaps a great extent, writing these things is one hell of a difficult job. I doubt any of these writers are as immersed in the GFFA as we are, so it has to be overwhelming trying to write these scripts. Plus knowing they have a lot to live up to... Makes me happy I'm not writing this stuff. LOL

It would have slowed the movie down. It's more of a cleanup from TFA than a help to TLJ. Good on them to skip it.

As @Jaxxon pointed out, it wouldn’t have added anything to The Last Jedi’s narrative, so much as serving as a reminder that Han died in The Force Awakens. That’s not to say that that his death had no effect on The Last Jedi; the deed of killing his own father had major repurcussions on Kylo Ren’s character arc, going so far as splitting Kylo’s “spirit to the bone” as Snoke puts it.

All of the funerals from the other films, like Qui-Gon in Episode 1, were funerals that took place in the same film as that character’s death. To have a funeral for Han an entire movie later would’ve been kinda pointless in my opinion, even if there is a minimal time-jump between movies. Perhaps the better question is if there should’ve been a funeral for Han at the end of The Force Awakens? (Which I don’t think would be necessary either, as the moment of mourning between Leia and Rey was enough in my eyes.)

Exactly this. Not to mention, The Last Jedi is the longest film in the franchise as is. Adding a memorial service for Han would’ve prolonged things even further, and I really feel like if they’re going to do any sort of memorial for anyone in the Sequel Trilogy, it should be reserved for Leia if she dies in Episode IX. She’s royalty and a well-respected leader within the Resistance, plus it would pay homage to the late Carrie Fisher as well.

While I would’ve enjoyed a funeral for Han as much as any other fan, there’s no need for it in The Last Jedi. It’s the same reason why they cut Rey and Chewie explaining where Han was to Luke. It’s taking screentime away to explain something the audience already knows about. Considering how much happened in The Last Jedi, they were better off to not include it and focus on everything else going on.

    No. There's no point, imo.
But I would have loved to see more the impact of his death on other charactes.
Not just murning, but some of them dealing with the issue more than we see.

The deleted scene of Luke mourning han's death is pretty good. Only about 20 seconds long but it feels so dire

It is. But still... personally, it’s not that I need to see them mourning (so that I can mourn the death of a character with them too). Not.
It’s that... I would have loved to understand better how/why/if that death effected some of them. Luke, Leia, his son etc... Same for Leia coming into IX. The point for me is not knowing how exactly they’re going to address the issue, but how much and how her send off will affected the plot and story on 9.

Star Wars movies starts in media res, with a bang. A memorial service for Han would be, weirdly enough, self-indulgent for a Star Wars movie. So no, that would not have made for a good film at all. (For a book, however, it is great! Totally different craft of story telling!).

I had no problem we did not see it. It would not have fit in TLJ. If they were going to do it on screen it should have been at the end of TFA

The timing of the memorial service for Han Solo was somewhat problematic. If it was going to be depicted in a film, it should have happened in THE FORCE AWAKENS before Rey and Chewbacca left for Ahch-To, and the same goes for the novelization.

This is one point where THE LAST JEDI as a film had different needs from Jason Fry's novelization. The film begins with action as the Resistance is evacuating from their base and the First Order arrives and begins their attack. That momentum is important for setting the pace for the film. The funeral scene can work better in print as a prologue since it's such a different storytelling experience.
