Every now and then, this topic comes up in Star Wars discussions: should we ever have an R-rated Star Wars movie?

Some fans are totally on board for this. After all, we already have limbs getting sliced off and Quarrens getting chopped in half by doors. Why not?

In my opinion, however, an R-rated Star Wars movie would be a massive mistake. I'm no prude about R-rated movies; "Logan" is probably my all-time favorite superhero film.

    But this is Star Wars.

I don't always agree with the whole "Star Wars is for kids" idea, because it's often used to justify dumbing things down. But I do firmly believe that Star Wars should be accessible to kids--and all the best Star Wars films are, decapitations and all.

I put myself back in my 12-year-old mindset. I imagine how brokenhearted I would be if the next Star Wars film, the next essential piece of canon, was something I couldn't watch.

To me, an R-rated Star Wars film would be a betrayal of the entire idea of Star Wars.

But that's my opinion. What's yours?

I think no film maker should look at an age rating while creating a movie. Let the process decide what rating the movie needs. Yes, this isn't really how it works, but it should be IMO.

    My point is- don't force a R-Rating. But also don't force a PG-Rating.

What would an R rated movie really add to Star Wars? People get hands chopped off, bodies sliced in half, implied sex scenes. It doesn't need to be Deadpool or Game of Thrones. So what? You want realistic violence and sex scenes? I mean, isn't that what separates and R rated film to a PG 13 film?

All comes down to the story. Why would it be "R"? Language? No. Earth swear words wouldnt make sense. Nudity? If it is really needed for the story. Ultra violent? Again if the story needs it.

So to me it all comes down if they have a compelling story that needs an R rating then sure, otherwise whats the point.

    I'd love one.
There have always been sci-fi horror elements in Star Wars that lend itself to the potential R rating. But it is for kids. So despite what I personally want, it will never happen, at least not in the foreseeable future.

I think with streaming options they could sneak one, more mature thing out there but they really won't so Billy's dad won't have to explain why he can't watch this Star Wars thing

Catina scenes would certainly take on a whole new meaning.

Kids are exposed to enough sexual innuendo and violence already. It's a bad idea, as even if it were released most kids would find a way to watch it eventually.

It goes against everything George Lucas would have wanted.

Yeah, I would like to have adult oriented star wars content at some point. As for what should or shouldn't be exposed to kids, that's the parents job to decide not societies. Definitely don't believe content should be changed or held back because of the impact it can supposedly possibly have on children.

We already have enough R-rated content on television *cough* Netflix Originals.

In school I used to see kids under the age of 15 swearing and it's logical to think that they attain that inappropriate behaviour from others (whether it would be from real life or on TV.)

I watched Star Wars as a kid like many others in my generation and the one before me. I am sure that the same will go for the ones that are going to arise after me as well. I want the same lovely experiences we had as kids to be passed on in the same manner to the next generation of Star Wars fans. In a way, R-rated content is going to prevent that from happening.

Personally, I've always had issues with others swearing just in general. In the many places in which I do hear of it, I quite often deliberate it as a lack of a better means of communication...and on television, poorly written and unimaginative dialogue. Now don't get me wrong, there are times where swearing is necessary, but I find that where there is R-rated content it is often used immensely.

I know many may disagree with me, but this is of course just one opinion of many others in this cantina.

Parents just need to keep their kids from watching too mature films and shows. A more mature SW has a place, just as Logan in the X-Men Saga did.

I'm sorry but I don't feel it is strictly the job of parents. Back in the day, when a family had just 1 TV it was a reasonable request. These days most families have multiple TVs, tablets, laptops, phones... It's a near impossible task particularly if you aren't a tech savvy parent. Parents need all the help they can get. Even if you succeed within your own house, some other child with a cell phone can expose them very easily.

Regardless, an R-rated SW just isn't happening under House of Mouse ownership.

So you can either decide to create an r-rated movie. But than you add r-rated stuff because you want to not because of the story needs it. Or you have a story which could need some r-rated scenes but would you want to risk an R for one or two small scenes?
There is a danger to add some more extrem scenes because now you can because it will be R-ratet anyway, or you soften the two scenes where it could have been useful for the story. IMO a story that can't be told without that isn't necessarily worth to be told.

R Rated would be for graphicness. Revenge of the Sith was the first PG-13 SW film and it is beloved precisely because its edgier and darker. An R Rated SW would allow for aspects of A Galaxy Far fo be seen that have had to be softened in the past. I am not saying all SW films should be R, but one film highlighting the Hutts, Bounty Hunting or even the Sith could be interesting.

It doesn't need to be R rated. We're talking about the same franchise where a guy gets burned alive--that's pretty graphic for PG 13.

Yep. We already have in-universe swearing, decapitations and dismemberment, torture, skimpy outfits etc. An R-rating literally adds nothing to the story.

i'm not in the slightest bit bothered one way or the other. if it's Star Wars... i'll go watch it.

I think that Deadpool has permanently opened up the studios eyes to the fact that there is a movie-going market for adult versions of franchises that are usually targeted at a younger audience.

I suspect it won't happen, but maybe i'm crazy in thinking that if someone puts forward a great idea for a Star Wars movie/show then it'll be considered without worrying too much about the rating it might get. I know.. crazy thinking lol :D

R-rated Disney movies used to be released under Touchstone Pictures (yes, there have been many R-rated Disney movies), but they shut that down recently. It certainly is not a fact that Disney only make family friendly content.. they just always used to do it under a different banner.

You use Deadpool for an example so lets look at that. I say this because I have seen Deadpool mentioned a couple of times.

    Why is Deadpool R?
Language: I believe that if you start using earth bound profanity throwing F bombs left and right it will take people out of the Star Wars Universe.
Graphic Violence: Many headshots and slow motion action sequences with swords cutting limbs off and decapitations. Do we need this to tell most stories.
Sexual Content: Although I dont recall out and out nudity there are multiple scenes of graphic sexual nature. Again do we need this to tell most stories.

I really think it comes down to graphic violence where I do believe Star Wars has already had multiple scenes which depict same sort of thing without the need to be so graphic. With a side of language which just doesnt fit.
