Capping off a 42-year, 9-film series is no simple task, and J. J. Abrams knew of the risks when he decided to tackle Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. So he spoke to three of the most famous figures involved with developing movies for the series: George Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan, and Rian Johnson.

In a new piece from Good Morning America, Abrams confirmed that he consulted with Lucas (the director of A New HopeThe Phantom MenaceAttack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith, and a writer on all of those films, along with The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi), along with Kasdan (the writer EmpireReturn, and The Force Awakens, along with the spin-off Solo), and Johnson, his immediate predecessor (who is in the midst of developing his own trilogy of films, which he will direct at least the first installment):

The former two are of course known for their work on the original trilogy, while the latter wrote and directed the film that serves as a sequel to Abrams's The Force Awakens and serves as a predecessor to Abrams's The Rise of Skywalker. Abrams previously had discussions with Johnson prior to passing the baton to him on The Last Jedi, and unsurprisingly, the two talked about the future when he took on the final film in the sequel trilogy. In general, it sounds like Abrams intends to have his film have heavy connections to everything that's come before, while also delivering a movie that provides a satisfying narrative in and of itself.

Unfortunately, aside from that quote, Abrams was not pressed for further information about what he talked with Lucas, Kasdan, and Johnson about. He did, however, explain that a big reason why he waited to reveal the title to The Rise of Skywalker had to do with giving the movie space from other installments in the series:

Lastly, Lucasfilm President and The Rise of Skywalker producer Kathleen Kennedy stated the word to sum up the film is 'Hope', and that she felt that the team behind the film is pulling out all the stops in order to deliver what might just be the biggest Star Wars movie ever:

I guess that means that TROS will be faster and more intense.

Anybody who watched the ST should know better than to believe there was great coordination between JJ, Rian, Kasdan, Kennedy -- and even George Lucas by golly -- on these films.

You still don't have to like TROS or the ST in light of this information. But dismissing it out of hand and fantasising that Abrams must have went to that trouble just to ignore them doesn't really enhance the credibility of anyone's position

It's not the least bit implausable (in fact, it's highly likely) that Lucasfilm publicized that JJ "consulted with Lucas, Kasdan, and Johnson" in an effort to reassure a concerned fanbase that despite all appearances to the contrary from the first two films -- YES, BY GOLLY -- this trilogy, including its upcoming TROS, was all planned out from the start, and even involved consultations with The Man, himself.

    The films, themselves, say otherwise.

In other words, instead of getting together to discuss the next movie, Abrams Lucas, Kasdan and Johnson have got together to promote a lie about getting together discussing the next movie.

The bolded bit was never claimed by anyone. So it's weird that you have to
invent a claim in order to dispute or ridicule it.

Invent a claim? SWNN Probe's reported about it in this thread's OP.

I'm not saying they didn't meet, I'm saying that the Disney/Lucasfilm marketers made a big deal of it. It's like hyping President Biden speaking on the phone with Putin about the Ukraine. If it prevents war, great. But ultimately, if Putin's Russian forces invade anyway, will history consider it as having been a big deal?

Where does it claim that every thing was all planned from the start?

What are these "meetings between the creators" pressers -- like this thread's OP report about TROS -- implying?

Oh just them admitting to having meetings before production is what you were referring to as claiming "everything was planned out from the start"?

They didn't make TROS up on the set. Of course they had meetings beforehand. Why would you assume they are lying about having meetings?

Thanks...I didn't see it, but my brother's pal, a lifelong DC fan, did and he said it was more like a computer game than a film....plenty of action, but very little story. I wonder if it's a Terrio thing, or something, because I thought TROS was like that.

Shouldn't everything have been planned out in advance?

JJ was quoted as saying he and Kasdan wrote TFA and then passed the baton to Rian Johnson for what was to come next.

Really! That's an interesting view, and one I can see, but not sure I fully share.
BvS had good concepts, but it was a very "behind-the-scenes" story, if that makes sense. The Ultimate Edition does fix some things, but it really accentuates what's already there. I like the Ultimate Edition and the tone of the movie for the operatic nature, but I also can't argue with all of the complaints either. Then again, saying all of that really drives home your point, eh?

Terrio also co-wrote ZSJL with Zack Synder (again) and someone named Will Beall, and ZSJL was awesome. The key take-away for me isn't just the script, but the pacing and length. BvS and JZSL were long movies, and their stories made sense and worked almost perfectly with that length. TROS's story made sense with the length it was, but there was so much going on at such a fast pace that it bogged the story down IMO. I think that ties into the director just as much as the writer. JJ loves his frenetic and kinetic movies. There's motion in nearly every frame, and there's always something to be done. He doesn't slow down, not for long anyways, because we need to get to the next thing, and we need to get there NOW.
Synder on the other hand doesn't mind taking his time and exploring the philosophy of his characters, or the operatic lives they live. Heck, most of BvS is Clark and Bruce trying to figure out the other one and talking about their worldviews in a world that's changed since both started. (Either because of them or because of what they've seen.) Neither is better than the other in a vacuum - Synder would have made an awful Episode 7, and JJ's Justice League, while fun, would probably not have been a good first Justice League or BvS.
I'd like to say that Terrio's vastly different...ah...subjective quality of writing depends on whether or not the subject matter has preexisting material he can draw from i.e. Argo being a book adaptation, but I don't think that's the case either. Star Wars had decades of Post-OT content to draw from, so the flaws of the story aren't because blueprints and inspiration didn't exist.

Still, I like your PoV of things!

Star Wars trilogies have never been planned out in advance. It wasn't until midway into 1978 when Lucas decided to combine Vader and the father figure that Lucas decide he could create a prequel story to show what Luke's father was like, rather than include him as another force ghost in the Dagobah scenes as had been originally planned. It wasn't until then that Lucas scored out "Star Wars part II" and wrote "Episode V".

He literally had no real plan for how to explain why Anakin actually turned to the dark side and why he actually chose to betray all the Jedi for the Emperor. He shot a whole bunch of stuff hoping it would accumulate and then threw it all out. He didn't figure it out until after Revenge Of The Sith finished shooting and had to manufacture it in post production.

So not planning a film trilogy out in advance is a good approach to filmmaking?
