The Batman (2022)

Looking forward to Colin Farrells penguin.

 

Of course I will see it, I'm into Superheroes and Comic Books and Batman is one of my favourite superheroes.

 

I’ve gotta admit, I am burnt out on Batman

 

What?!? How so? I'm sorry you feel that way. (Also, I hope you get your mojo back since we're going to be getting THREE live action versions of the character next year within two movies, a game based on the Bat's progeny and the Court of Owls, and a game where you probably get to fight him.)

 

I'm sorry you're feeling that way, but you definitely made the right choices on which MCU films to skip this year (although I don't think they're as bad as the critical reception for them was). As for the DC stuff, Aquaman is worth watching if you liked Shang-Chi and Black Panther - it's a classic inversion of those stories in a way with a wild fun atmosphere.

 

I probably should have linked this with the above, but it's been confirmed to be two hours and fifty-five minutes with credits. This means that the only superhero movie released in theaters longer than this one is Avengers: Endgame. (BvS: Ultimate Edition is 3 hours 2 min with credits, and Justice League is 4 hours 2 min with credits.)

My own thoughts of this are mixed. On one hand, I love Batman, and more Batman is good Batman. It's also a sign in WB's faith in the movie, faith they didn't show Zack Snyder. (Whether or not this was deserved is a different thing altogether.)
On the other hand, a movie should be as long as it needs to be, and there is a part of me that's afraid this movie is longer than it needs to be. This movie seems to be both expansive in scope and concentrated with its characters, and it leaves me a little uneasy on what that will mean for both. On the flip side, with all that time, there's a LOT of room for surprises and time to really dive into these characters.

There's another part of me that's pretty blasé about the time, also. It's not uncommon for superhero movies - or any major blockbuster "epic," SFF or no - to reach 2.5 hours nowadays, so it makes sense that this movie would be above that as well.

But I'm also intrigued. This is the first movie of a potential trilogy, if the rumors are to be believed. There's a lot this movie can set up for future movies in a runtime like that. But what does that mean for future movie runtimes? Usually, the movies only get longer as the series goes on. If this is starting out at nearly 3 hours, will the next one or two go even longer? Or will this one, because it's doing all of the set-up, be the longest while the next two reap the benefits? We'll have to wait and see.

What are y'all's opinions on the runtime? What about the theme?

 

Ehh... I'm split on it too.

I'm totally fine with a movie being as long as it needs to be, and I don't think we really have much reason to think this film is bloated yet.

That said... while I liked some of what the Snyder Cut did, I did think that film was far longer than it needed to be. So, I guess I understand the concern.

Really though, I think people read a lot into movie times when it's the only solid info we really have to go on for a while. To me, a movie is best when I don't know how much time has passed by the end, and I'm satisfied but wishing there was more still.

I guess by default, too, the average movie to me is 2-2.5 hours. 3 is long, but it doesn't seem absurdly long, in my opinion.

 

Not bothered about runtime if its good.

I seen it, it different verison of Batman. Of course there always be different Batman. Edward Cullen did well I know he did Twilight and dated co-star but being Batman made me forget that abit. Didn't Colin Farrell was even in it and don't recognize. Was thinking this in the same world of The Joker. I was thinking of the cats and but see no harm of the cats and Catwoman took one. Didn't expect much in the credits and after, just trailers of upcoming DC movies. At end where Batman ride off looking at bike mirror seeing Catwoman ride off and then look on, give emotion, not sure why. Best bit Batman chase Peguin. Batmobile is different to other Batmobiles, guess it show what real life Batman like. Batman Begins is my favourite but a site may say The Batman better. I enjoyed more senses in Batman Begins than The Batman, rememeber watching Batman Begins on famliy holiday in cinema and it's a big cinema room, maybe why Begins special to me. Well everyone's has favourite movies great or poor.

 

Finally got to see this, via HBO.

I really liked the noir aspect of the film, but the gritty re-interpretation definitely felt a bit too similar to Nolan's trilogy. However, I think that could still be a good thing.

In the comics, Falcone's end in The Long Halloween is seen as a sort of turning point in Gotham- the end of the mob, and the rise of the supervillain. It'd be pretty neat to see Battinson's more grounded world from this film start to get stranger in future films, in a way that Nolan's really only flirted with. For instance, Bane's venom is implied in some of the scenes of The Batman... if we get a Bane in this version, actually have him use the serum and be a big guy in a luchador mask who is still a genius- the best of both worlds, and probably the best way to interpret the comics, anyway (and the Rebirth run of Batman has some pretty good Bane stories to draw from too, that don't rely entirely on rehashing Knightfall again).

If we get Paul Dano back as Riddler, give him a bit goofier of a Riddler costume. He had the creepy serial killer getup this time (which again, worked well for this story), but it'd be fun to see him sporting a cane and question mark jacket in later films, showing his growing egotism and slide into further madness.

In later films, give us a good Mr. Freeze story, or delve into Clayface or the Court of Owls. Lean into the camp- not fully, but also not in a way that's not quite as shy of its comic book origins.
