I want to see something from way The Phantom Menace timeline. Something with either Darth Bane era or Darth Plagueis era.

Someone with a first and last name would be a nice change of pace. I do not want an omega level force prodigy either. Someone who has to work hard to be where they are and still get knocked around would be great.

My ideal hero would be an established Jedi Knight. No training required because that part of her/his life is done. We can jump right into the conflict or adventure.

It would be cool to see the redemption of someone who was unfairly kicked out of the Jedi Order. Kind of like a fugitive Jedi who is be tracked by a rogue Jedi. I'm not really interested in another coming of age Jedi story.

That's the exact premise of the KOTOR comic. A member of the Jedi Order is unjustly cast out of the Jedi Order and sentenced for execution, spending the rest of the story evading capture from the rogue Jedi attempting to kill him.

There are two potential stories that interest me.

    1. A story about the first Force users and how that revolutionised the galaxy. The story begins on a planet (perhaps Coruscant), where The Force is known by some but outlawed, proclaimed to be dangerous witchcraft by a ruling elite - who follow their own monotheistic religion. A child is born of force sensitive parents who have lived in the unknown lands of the planet, that have explored the nature of the Force. They believe it is their destiny to spread the will of the force and so travel to the Royal kingdom. They are accused of blasphemy and murdered by knights that serve the monarchy. The child however, is rescued and taken in by the barren Queen.

Many years pass and we rejoin the story during a time of war. The Royal army has been waging wars in the "unknown lands", fighting against what are believed to be a savage race of lifeforms (mystical beings that boys parents lived with). The young hero of the story is now 18 and has many dreams and visions that point to him being different. The Royal Knights return from the war, victorious, but then betray the Royal family. Its leader has discovered the power of the Dark Side and seeks to take over. The young hero escapes, after hearing the truth of his brith from the Queen and sets off into the unknown lands to discover who he is.

We then follow the hero as he learns of the Force from this mysterious race and face many trials on his journey's to him eventually returning and defeating those that serve the Dark Side.

The main idea of this is to set up not just how the Force is first studied but how the galaxy, very quickly, advanced technologically. I like the idea of the Force wishes to connect all living things across the galaxy. Alongside that, we see how Anakin and Luke were known for their technological abilities. It was almost as if their "knowledge" was linked to their Force potency. Perhaps the discovery and studying of the Force led to rapid technological growth? And so we can follow our hero from a sort of medieval existence to either him or his close ancestors inventing space travel. Thus the trilogy could take place over decades or centuries and tell the story of the origins of the Force, exploration of the galaxy and ultimately the birth of the Jedi, Sith and Republic. It would be a grand epic tale that could match that of the Skywalker story whilst being totally different.

    2. Set the story in the very distant, post-Skywalker galaxy. I'd perhaps like to see a story that is a riff of the most important crisis facing the world today - global warming. I think the opening gambit of this thread is perhaps the wrong question to begin with. Rather, the question should be: who should the new villain be? What is the problem that needs solving? That's where the interest is and the hero can be created from that. And this should in turn be connected to the real world (as the original Star Wars films were). I'd also like to see a SW story where the Jedi are not super powerful, as I think that causes story issues and makes for a rather dull tale). And so perhaps the villain could be someone who is seeking to take over the galaxy and does so by weakening those that use the Force by weakening the Force itself. How? By destroying the natural world. "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power - "it's an energy field created by all living things". The Force in this case then would be a metaphor for the natural world and how killing it effects us.

In terms of this hero, it would lend itself to someone who skirts the light and dark side. Due to the diminishing power of the Force, they might believe they need to use the Dark Side to empower themselves to defeat the villain. This of course provides the classic hero journey for the hero. Writing this, it sounds a bit "woke", but I've always felt SW films should reflect the important issues facing the real world. Perhaps the hero isn't a Jedi or Jedi student from the beginning but after the order is wiped out he learns of its importance (and history) and becomes awakened to its power? This would then reflect our own ignorance to the world around us and how it is important to see the importance in all living things.

A bit preachy, but there you go!

If people though TLJ was politically preachy I don't think they're gonna be on board for this allegory. Off topic, but access to clean water is more important than adapting to a changing climate in terms of global crisis. @master_shaitan Finally something we can disagree about!

I do think there's needs to be a clear concept of good and evil. This is something some modern storytellers struggle with... this nuanced concept of good and evil may work in independent cinema, but for films like this it just doesn't work very well. I always think about the Matrix which started with a clear good and evil, but at the end of the trilogy presented some nonsensical peace between humans and robots.
I haven't read that, but that sounds cool. Star Wars films have a lot of Western genre influence. The Searchers had a huge influence on Star Wars and Lucas borrowed elements for his films. Some Westerns have a lot of fantasy elements. The myths surrounding gunslingers for example. I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with the The Outlaw Josey Wales but that's a fairly simple story that could be made into a very god Star Wars films borrowing the correct elements.

They wouldn’t want to hear my vegan Star Wars story then!

I think those that complain forget that the OT was strongly influenced by the Vietnam war. It was highly political in places. If Star Wars doesn’t get political and try to present a moral message then it loses a lot of its value, in my opinion.

Perhaps a global warming and lack of clean water allegory would be the way to go?! :p

The Outlaw Josey Wales is my favorite Eastwood film ever (even if it's a film I can't see ever getting made today, given the current political climate). One thing about that film that I really enjoy is its Odyssey-esque journey in which Josey recruits/adopts many other wanderers and estranged people like him, all of which look to him for guidance. Something like that could really work for something like Star Wars, but I don't know how well that can be implemented to a trilogy, since it will require using the recruited characters and continuing their development and use in the sequels, a task Josey Wales wasn't saddled with since it's a one-off film.

It's not a perfect example, but the story of Josey Wales could be turned into a sequel in the larger scope of the Star Wars universe with just a few changes. The key to a good trilogy is telling a fantastic small story first and growing from that.

Haven't heard of it until now. Just read the synopsis and I think you have a great idea there. I could easily see that play over the course of a trilogy, with a little adaptation. Perhaps the first film finishing at the end of the slaughter and the next two films following him as he gets his group together and seeks revenge - which later turns into a selfless movement to rid the galaxy of whatever this other faction is.

Will have to check out the film!

As a fan that is somewhere between more than 'casual' and less than 'walking wokkiepedia' im more concerned on the story rather than the characters themselves.

I'd personally love to see the origins of the first force sensitive's played out on screen. Sort of SW meets Heroes (only the first season though). Or possibly the split between jedi and sith and how it was formed.

Again IMHO SW isn't SW without the force. Its what differentiates it from other 'Space Operas' (God I hate that term, makes me think of galactic coronation Street) SW without the force and everything that goes with it is effectively star trek. Not saying that is a bad thing though. So I want to stick with the force as a main part of the story.

I don't think going ahead or parallel to the main timeline would be different enough or allow as much creative freedom. So let's go waaay waaay back to the beginning. I think that would be a great way to show something new and original.

As for the characters; be them aliens, humans or droids I have no preference as long as they are interesting and their family has sod all to do with the story.

This to be fair I'd be quite happy to see play out as a live action series or in any of the new trilogies.

This is a topic I have given much thought.
It is important for Star Wars to expand their boundaries, to press forwards, but our main hero should be intriguing. I’m sorry to say this, but I am personally not very interested in more rebels vs. empire conflict. I want to see a Jedi back in the heyday or something mysterious like Ahsoka post Rebels. They can make a new force-sensitive order, like Benduu.
There are so many paths the films can go.

If you believe the run-of-the-mill internet rumor, there are new things on google news mentioning the Rian Johnson movies. Not much is said in these rumors except that the project is NOT dead. I’m not sure if the starwarsnewsnet.com moderators are holding off until it is confirmed (or maybe we don’t want to publish a story for fear of angering a certain segment of fans) but I’m personally glad (but not surprised in the least) that RJ’s trilogy is alive and well. I assumed he just needed to finish Knives Out and polish up his scripts before he resumes work.
I am wondering though... with Lucasfilm’s new emphasis on “one on one” films (no longer trilogies, similar to Marvel and everybody else) is RJ’s films still a “trilogy” of three films? Don’t know, but would like to...

For the record, there has never been any indication that Johnson's trilogy is off; not one.

The impression is that Johnson (and LFL) are not in any rush, and while he's repeatedly confirmed that pre-preproduction is still underway, Johnson has also suggested he might do other films in the intermin before his grand SW initiative is ready; this was first hinted and then confirmed with Knives' Out, and now the latest (that I know) is that he's thinking about doing the Knives' Out sequel before heading back into the Long Time Ago, Far, Far Away.

Will it be a trilogy? Well, no one knows at this point. Nothing to the contrary has been suggested, even though LFL has hinted to a shift in style and focus, so it's anybody's guess. I assume that if Johnson's series are still to be a trilogy, they will nonetheless try to make the first one work on itself as a stand-alone SW film, just in case, to limit risks; this strategy makes all kinds of sense from a business perspective, and would be similar to how ANH (and to a lesser degree Solo:ASWS) works perfectly as stand-alones.
