It seems to be the case, at least when the U.K. versions are split into parts. WoK seems to be a bit generic, but the one with the sword is probably Dalinar. WoR Part 2 is definitely Szeth, and we all know who graces the cover of Oathbringer. Now RoW continues that trend. I guess that all of the artists are given a depiction of whatever scene/theme Brandon wants for the cover/chooses, and from there each artist does their own interpretation of that scene.

But then I’m wondering what the three follow up books are like & also Mistborn Secret History has anyone read them & what did you think of them.

The three follow up books are VERY different, in terms of scope, scale, and tone. They're lighter books that follow a different cast of characters. The stakes aren't as high, but the implications will reach just as far as any implications in the first trilogy. I've heard some people dislike them because they're so different than the first three. I've heard other say they're actually better. I love them all, so don't ask me for an opinion!
They may take an adjustment, but push through and you'll find some great characters and one of Brandon's best love stories. That's all I can say without spoilers. Oh, and there's one more book in the series (it was written as a standalone plus a trilogy) that should hopefully come out in 2022...we'll see. It was originally supposed to come out in 2018, but then things sort of fell apart, his YA editor needed a book, and then it was back to Stormlight season, and here we are...

Secret: History is a different beast altogether. All I can recommend is knowing it exists and then reading it after the final Mistborn book that's released. I think you'll LOVE it.

    Thanks for this.

I’m definitely getting Secret History & at some point I will also probably end up getting the other 3 books at some point although there are lots of other books out there that I have my eye on thankfully I have loads of room on my kindle ( although Rhythm of War is going to be a hard back purchase.

Draft 1 of Dawnshard is complete! Remember, that doesn't mean the novella is ready to read today. Brandon still has a month or two of work to do on the book. He has:

Draft 2 (the rough polish to fix known problems)
Alpha Reads (his writing group and editors)
Draft 3 (Incorporating the writing group stuff and editor stuff that he can)
Beta Reads (fans, friends, and professionals who are willing to provide feedback, perspective, and advice about the novella. It's sort of like a test-crowd for a movie.)
Draft 4 (incorporating the Beta Readers' feedback)
Draft 5 (10% trim - where he goes through each chapter and slims it down by about 10%)

This is where Brandon's involvement with the book ends, but there is still copyediting, the Gamma Read, and typesetting.

Granted, since the novella is so small, I don't expect it to take more than a week for each part at most, and Brandon can use the time between the drafts to start working on Skyward 3.

If you want the Novella and you didn't preorder it during the kickstarter, you can still get it using Backerkit!

    https://thewayofkings.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders

Brandon will do an update on his kickstarter page probably later today, so I'll link that when it comes out.

While not Stormlight news, we do have some exciting developments from Brandon. Brandon has been working on an audio-original story with friend and podcast co-host Mary Robinette Kowal aptly titled The Original. It's a sci fi story with a pretty cool concept. I know I'll be picking it up (and not just because Brandon's name is attached). They released the first chapter online below, and I have to ask - are all audiobooks this good?!

The Original releases on September 14.

I wanted to do a quick review of The Original while it's fresh. (There will be minor Stormlight news with more speculation than necessary at the bottom.) Overall, this is a nice fun sci-fi short story that fans of high concept sci-fi and thrillers will no doubt enjoy.

The Original follows Holly as she wakes up in a new body with weeks of memory missing, is told she's a clone of her Original, and to return to normalcy she must hunt down and kill the existing version of herself. Unfortunately, nothing is ever simple. Mary Robinette Kowal's prose and introspection brings Holly to life in a world where life is both fluid and a façade, while Brandon's world-building is slowly peeled back like the rind of an orange. The mystery is solid (although the methodology reminds me of another novella Sanderson wrote), and the payoff is worth it. It's honestly amazing how much they fit into a story that's shorter than four hours.

As with all stories, there are issues. Pacing really rough at points, and the ending wraps up things with little flourish or denouement IMO. But for the ending they were going for, it worked pretty well.

In the end, for fans of sci-fi and/or Sanderson, this is definitely worth checking out. 8/10.

Last week, Sanderson finished Draft 2 of Dawnshard. While it's currently in Beta, Brandon has a few weeks to work on other projects. There aren't any clues as to what he's working on currently, but I wanted to put out a theory that he's fixing the ending of The Apocalypse Guard. Previously Sanderson mentioned that he needed a few weeks in the upcoming months to revise the ending of the book, and from there it should be solid enough to send back to either Dan Wells, his co-author for this project, or to bring to a publisher (most likely his YA publisher Delacarte). These weeks between drafts of Dawnshard would provide the perfect amount of time.

However, Brandon's a busy man, and he might be outlining Skyward 3 & 4 at the moment. It would be beneficial to do this now, so that he can dive straight into Skyward 3 once Dawnshard is out of his hands. Part if me doubts this though, since the past few books he needed to outline had a progress bar for the outline on his website. And something as small as fixing the ending to TAG wouldn't need a whole progress bar.

There are other options too. With the release of The Original, Brandon's new co-founded company Mainframe will most likely announce what exactly it is, and start promoting new material (which may line up with Steven Bohls' Deathrise, a book that takes place in the same world as Sanderson's Reckoners trilogy); and he could be working to make sure things are ready there. Frankly, I think we're more likely to hear about Mainframe during the State of the Sanderson this December.

He also has Dark One stuff to go over, since the project is a multi-media series (a television show with J. Michael Straczynski as the writer/showrunner, a graphic novel made by Vault Comics, and a potential audio novella about an in-world podcast), so that could be taking up some of his time.
Or maybe the man is just taking a break. Between sprinting to finish Rhythm of War, writing Dawnshard, getting The Way of Kings Kickstarter stuff ready, promoting Dark One and now The Original, it's been an incredibly busy year for everyone at Dragonsteel. Having his team take a vacation/staycation may be what everyone needs.

Anyways, if he doesn't talk about it on the next stream, I wouldn't expect to hear about what he's been up to anytime soon until Beta Reads are done.

...and in another episode of "How Will Sanderson Prove Use the Falchion Wrong This Time," Brandon posted the first official update for Skyward 3. This is great news though, and let's hope Sanderson keeps his schedule.

Sanderson is putting Skyward 3 at about 100k words, so shorter than previous books in the series. On the one hand, that sort of stinks; I though Starsight (Skyward 2) was going to be the shortest novel and then the series would bounce back to larger ones. And frankly, that still might be the case - Rhythm of War was originally supposed to be around 430k words, and it ballooned to 460k (a little over 470k with all of the "thank you's," dedications, and minute text).
On the other hand, so long as the book is out by 2021 and Brandon can start on Wax & Wayne 4 on January 1st, then I won't complain.

So in some Stormlight news, Brandon's officially release information for his online launch party! You have to buy Rhythm of War from one of the partnering stores, and they'll send you a code for a private YouTube release stream. Here's the information in a more succinct form:

    https://www.tor.com/2020/09/24/brandon-sandersons-rhythm-of-war-launch-event/

And in more Brandon "How Do You Write Like You're Running Out of Time" Sanderson news, the man has officially started his first draft of Skyward 3! It's at 2%, which is two percent more than I thought it'd be this soon, given his update. Maybe Beta Reads are still going on, so he decided to start early? I have no idea. Either way, the man is Non-Stop!

Yup! It's both heartbreaking, heartwarming, and so many things are so beautifully foreshadowed. Are you going to start the Wax & Wayne books, or will you read Elantris or something else first?

I am glad you liked it. If you decide to read Wax & Wayne books next, you'll get a few great surprises! (I won't spoil unless you ask)

If you take recommendations, start Stormlight Archive, you just have enough time to catch up. It's more challenging but also more rewarding.

I have Mistborne Secret Archive on my reading list ( although I have a new 4 book detective series to read first)
Then I may just have time to re read the first 3 Stormligbt books before the next one is released.

In Dawnshard news, Brandon "my works just keep getting longer" Sanderson has finished draft 3! And yeah, Dawnshard is now officially the size of a small novel...

There should be one more draft finished before Kickstarter funders get their copy; and then those who didn't fund the Kickstarter will be able to buy theirs afterward. But for now, I believe it'll be back to Skyward 3 for about a week, and then it'll be time to finish up the novella. Sanderson and/or his crew will have an update on the Kickstarter page pretty soon. I'll link that if it covers any new information.

This week has had a lot of upsetting news, but here is some good news - Dawnshard's final draft is complete! There are still some editing things that need to be done, but we may see this novel(la) in the hands of the backers by next week! Which means Sanderson's a little off from the October estimation, but not by much. (Not surprising given how the story ballooned to nearly twice its intended size.) I'd give it a week or so after that, and it'll be available to by in eReader format for everyone; just in time for the non-spoiler reviews of Rhythm of War to be released. It'll be a great appetizer for the main course. Anyways, here's the update.

Excellent as I’m going to need something to read until Rhythm of War comes out

So I’m struggling a bit with Mistborn Secret History so I’m taking a bit of a break from it reading it refresh myself with something completely different I have some good new detective fiction to read & then come back to it probably after I ave read Dawnshard & Rhythm of War.

Have you read Mistborn Era 2 yet? If not, I'd say: detective fiction, Dawnshard, Rhythm of War, Era 2, Secret History.

EDIT: I forgot to add in the Dawnshard update post, but Sanderson is also roughly 15% of the way through writing the first draft for Skyward 3. Given that he wants the book to be roughly 100k words, that's about 15k words done. At his current speed, Brandon should have just enough time to finish Skyward 3 before he gives that to his team and starts Wax & Wayne 4, but rest assured myself and others will keep a close eye on that progress bar!

Dawnshard will be released for Kickstarter backers sometime tomorrow! By sometime next week, it will be available to those who didn't support the Kickstarter. Next Tuesday will be the release of the final preview chapter (13 days AHHHHH!!) as well as the release of the non-spoiler reviews, if Oathbringer is anything to go by. I'll probably link the non-spoiler review here when I get the chance, but I WILL NOT be posting any spoilers or spoiler-reviews here. Y'all, we're almost there.

Dawnshard dropped last night, and I just finished reading less than twenty minutes ago. Overall it was really fun! Rysn and the Lopen's points of view on the world are very different, but they are really good to explore.

We learn a lot about the titular items, and they have IMPLICATIONS. Like, Beyond Stormlight IMPLICATIONS. It's almost scary. I don't want to spoil anything, but if you're looking for a teaser before Rhythm of War, definitely check this out when it goes on sale (I'll link it here when it does).

In Rhythm of War news, it looks like the non-spoiler review embargo ends tomorrow. Or at least for some people. YouTubers Daniel Greene and Merphy Napier - the same people I linked previously for reviews of The Original - are uploading their spoiler-free reviews of the book tomorrow. I'll be sure to link them.
