Basically everything surrounding Rian Johnson's trilogy is a mystery so far, and we can only guess what he's planning.

However, one popular rumor is that his trilogy will take place in the unknown regions of the galaxy. The rumor spans from the fact that the only specific detail we know about his trilogy is the following quote:

“The new trilogy will focus on new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”

With this quote in mind, it's no coincidence that fans are quick to jump to conclusions and immediately think of the unknown regions. Because it is most definitely the place that has been explored the least in Star Wars before. That being said, is it a good idea? And is it even possible, or just pure speculation?

Personally, I'm clouded. While I'd like to see something completely different from what we've seen before, I don't think going too far into the unknown regions is the right approach. We need something we can relate to so that this feels like its taking place in the Star Wars galaxy, otherwise what's the point of calling it Star Wars? They might as well just drop Star Wars from the title and make this Rian Johnson's completely separate science fiction universe.

I wouldn't mind it taking place in the unknown regions. There are plenty of themes and visual motifs to make it feel like a Star Wars movie. Not to mention, the Force. Not to mention, this leaves open the possibility of encountering people or places from the known SW universe somewhere along the line.

If they don't set this movie way in the past or way in the future, I would like to see it take place in the Unkown Regions.

At this point as long as it has no direct correlation to the Saga or current spin-off movies I think I would be fine with any direction Rian chooses to go. I want him to truly take Star Wars where is hasn't been before, and if that is what he is claiming and wanting to do, that's what I want him to really do.

Unknown regions would be great. I think with that depending on how it is handled it could run the risk of being a little Star Trek-esque, but it opens the door to a ton of potential.

Honestly, my hope is that it will be mostly self-contained. Show how force users outside the Jedi have learned to use or refuse to use The Force. Or some kind of really cool historical piece set far enough back it doesn't directly impact any of the Saga films.

That quote could mean any of the thousands of canonical planets we haven't seen on film. People are forgetting we haven't seen a lot of planets in the known galaxy on film. So I really doubt it will take place there completely.

Here's the thing. Having it be strictly location based may not have enough to it, if only because for all the Star Wars movies we've seen so far, the entire Galaxy is the canvas. I suppose the Original Trilogy stays in the outer Rim, but the Prequels go from Coruscant to Tatooine and a few places in between. Whomever is making the movies just uses whatever planet suits them, and it's retroactively placed on a Galactic map.

I suppose they have built up the Unknown regions as being very mysterious. Somewhat frontier-like (I suppose that's more Wild Space than Unknown regions). I could actually see a story where instead of fighting the Empire, a group ran from it, decided they'd go colonize somewhere that the Empire wasn't. They can run into the Chiss Ascendency, etc. They can also have to deal with the Empire running out to them to create the First Order.

I wouldn't mind it being in the unknown regions. That said, I think the unknown regions would be better suited to be explored in a TV series, but I guess having a trilogy to accompany that wouldn't be bad either.

All that said, I'm an explorer at heart. I loved Star Trek TNG for this, and I think a SW version of that would be cool to see, but maybe I'm alone. I'm not saying it has to do everything Star Trek does, but just the exploration part would be neat. Nothing says they don't just start by exploring the edge, while still maintaining contact with known space... where there are dealings with Hutts and the like. I've always envisioned SW of having all sorts of people from all walks of life, no reason to not explore different aspects of the GFFA.

Well I guess the latest rumor is that Rian Johnson's trilogy will take place in a completely different galaxy.

    Lol.

I don't realy know why people think of the unknown regions as something that's completely different from the known regions. What could you do in the unknown regions that you can't do in the explored universe? What kind of limitations in terms of storytelling, new planets and designs does the known galaxy have which the unknown regions wouldn't have?

Which would sooner or later result in a Star Wars movie where the only thing Star Wars is the title. It would be like "Harry Potter and the Lizzard Zombies of Alpha Centauri". Just because I put Harry Potter in the title doesn't mean that it is a Harry Potter story.

At this point it wouldn't surprise me if they'll drop Star Wars from the title completely. Unless they scrap Rian's trilogy altogether, I would actually prefer if they take this route. The less connection it has to the rest of the GFFA and our beloved Star Wars, the better.

I would get Alex Garland to work along side Rian in writing a trippy story set in the unknown regions. I just finished watching his movie Annihilation...what an awesome movie!

Same here. Paramount really effed up big when it came to distributing and promoting the movie - the film's a great slow-burn science-fantasy character study that's unsettling from start to finish.

after reading through the review of the newest Thrawn book i think one of the new trilogies (or series, in the case of GoT guys) may explore the unknown regions (UR).

not only Thrawn is referencing the UR: the theme park will feature Batuu, the planet closest to the UR. i can only imagine that Disney, being the schemers they are, are planning to promote their new park in TV and/or film.

at this point, with so little known on the future of the main saga, i really wouldn't be surprised if RJ is exploring the UR and that JJ will somehow introduce the concept in episode 9.

many fans are rabidly wanting to know more about Snoke (from the UR) and the KoR, not to mention Thrawn and what his people have been facing in the UR over the past long while. episode 9 could be the segue that connects the known to the unknown.

RJ's trilogy would then take a step back from the main saga and explore the characters and concepts of the UR as introduced by JJ in episode 9. once his trilogy wraps we get a return to the main story, some 5-10 years later: episodes 10-12.

You are suggesting that Lucasfilm has an overarching plan of how concepts introduced in Episode 9 and their theme parks will somewhat tie into Rian Johnson's trilogy?

Based on what we've seen from Lucafilm and the handling of the ST so far, that seems like a very far-fetched idea.

I think it's very safe to assume that Rian Johnson's trilogy will be its very own thing with nothing referenced in previous films or stuff. They don't have an overarching plan for this, they are making things up as they go.

indeed, i am suggesting that Lucasfilm is looking further ahead than one may assume.

it may not be RJ's story, it could very well be another story line they will pick up and continue with after 9. it could also be the project the GoT guys are working on.

building a theme park without connections to the canon would be kind of lame. it'd be like a Harry Potter park without Hogwarts or Hogsmeade.

the stories that are coming out right now are heavily implying UR activity. Batuu is the closest place to the UR and the stage for the new park. you do the math.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jul 23, 2018, Original Post Date: Jul 23, 2018 ---
i guess my point is more that Batuu and the UR are going to be coming into focus soon; i'm not sure if or how they'll be connected to the main saga, but they will explored in future.

Rian should go write his own story instead of continue destroying SW

Again, like I said before. Why do you think they will change their formula? I'm using logic to calculate how they're going to handle this. And based on how they've handled the ST, they never had an overarching plan for it. It's been confirmed as a fact, so there's really nothing you can say about this. Rian Johnson, for example, was given complete freedom to do whatever he wanted with the story in TLJ.

Still, that's what they're doing with the new Star Wars Land. Batuu is a completely new planet with no prior connections to canon.

As a big Star Wars fan, I love what the Unknown Regions represents for the series- the idea that, even in this big diverse galaxy, there's still so much more out there.

But I'm not sure how casual moviegoers would react.

Here's what I think of as the "Chiss Problem": In Star Wars, we've got some strange species. Ithorians, Exogorths, and Bor Gullet, just to name a few. Outside of that, stuff like the Force and the World Between Worlds really make the GFFA seem truly fantastic and alien already.

So basically, as cool as the Chiss and Thrawn are, to a casual fan they just seem like Space Smurfs. In Star Wars, almost everything is alien to us audience members- from a casual point of view, why should the Chiss, one of the more relatively normal seeming species, be the ones from outside the known galaxy?

So I think an Unknown Regions story really has to throw some weird stuff our way. An alien invasion story in Star Wars could be a really cool thing, but it's important that it not just feel like a regular invasion from another GFFA planet. That's one thing that I think the Vong at least did all right.

until all is said and done and we get to look at the thing in hindsight, i don't think anyone not on the inside can make a statement about overarching plans for the sequel trilogy. Lucasfilm story group is most assuredly working on an overarching plan for the franchise as a whole; to deny that is ridiculous.

Batuu does have connections to canon prior to the ST. the new books are cramming it into PT era, as shown in the new Thrawn book. i believe that Thrawn has a larger role to play in future and that we will probably see Ezra again in connection. this is a guess, but giving the trajectory of current stories i feel like it's not a bad hypothesis.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jul 31, 2018, Original Post Date: Jul 31, 2018 ---
they could totally pull off a cool look for the Chiss. space smurfs? did you think that during Avatar too? blue doesn't equal cute and cuddly...

the Chiss are being attacked by some enemy over there in the UR; that enemy could certainly have the appeal of weird/alien bad guys. if anything, i see the Chiss as being the protagonists in future, not the invading force from the UR. that i would leave to Snoke's people, or whoever is attacking the Chiss (or both).

I was tongue in cheek with the Smurfs comment, but I still don't know how well it would work.

The Chiss are supposed to feel alien. In Star Wars, everything is alien.

I'd think it'd be hard to really get the full effect of that with the average audience, but after that curveball in Solo, I guess anything's possible.
