and all of the "issues" have been from the stand alone films for the most part.
I think they set bullet points to be hit by the end of the last movie. The rest? Let the creatives be creative.

I have a co-worker friend of mind who is what I'd consider a casual Star Wars fan finally watched The Last Jedi this week. It's kind of funny to me, but he has young kids so going to see a move at a theater just isn't a luxury he's had for a few years. When I told him the film was on NetFlix he said "I heard it was terrible." Now, at first I thought he was talking about TLJ, but he was actually talking about Solo. BTW this is the second time this week I've heard someone say that about Solo.

I was curious what he though of the film because he didn't really know anything about it. He really liked it and he even mentioned the Leia scene as being of one of the more amazing scenes. Obviously this is just one person of millions, but it makes me wonder how the internet shapes opinions. Not just on TLJ, but how Solo is perceived as bad movie even though it got decent reviews. Solo is perceived as a bad film because it didn't make as much money as some thought.

It's amazing @DailyPlunge , our real life experiences regarding the exact same things are complete, polar opposites. It's a funny old world.

It is interesting how different people have different experiences. My wife likes SW but I would definitely consider her a casual fan. She has really enjoyed both TFA and TLJ. She couldn’t even finish R1. She hasn’t seen Solo yet so it will be interesting to see what she thinks when it comes out in video.

Just watched TLJ again. Still like it. I still feel like I’m crazy for liking it. I see all the vehemence against it I feel like I’m supposed to hate it too but I don’t. Is there something wrong with me? Why am I struggling to get on board with the widely held belief that this movie singlehandedly ruined the franchise?

I have noticed that a lot of people who loved R1 hated TLJ and vice versa. I wonder why that is.

Your not crazy for liking it. Many others have liked it. I’m one of them. It’s your opinion and there is nothing wrong with it. Those who dislike TLJ are much more vocal than those who liked it. This gives the impression that you are in the minority thus causing the feelings you have. However, that is not the case. While there are a number of people who did not like the movie it is not as large as it seems

I don't hate Rogue One, but it's the weakest of the new Star Wars films. I like it, but it's basically a slog to watch until it's saved by a fantastic final act. It also played things pretty safe.
Most people like the TLJ. I think this is partly why some people are so upset about it.

I think Rogue One suffered from Studioitis.
I think there's traces of a LONGEST DAY meets DIRTY DOZEN movie in there that didn't quite fit the four quadrant mold they wanted

I’ve said it before about my distaste of the prequels: characters are my entry point into any story. If you can convince me that these are real people with hopes and dreams and organic motivations that place them in compelling situations with one another, then I’ll forgive just about anything. R1 didn’t do that for me. I didn’t care if any of them lived or died.

And if that was the ultimate destination (self-sacrifice), then their respective journeys to that point needed to be the focus and I simply didn’t buy it. The third act was definitely a rousingly fun spectacle, but couldn’t make up for the meandering of the first two. Basically, I feel like I could have read the Wookiepedia synopsis instead and not missed much.

TLJ, I had some issues with, but largely I was able to engage with most of the key players. Some of the decisions were head scratchy for me, but I was able to invest in what (I believe) RJ was getting at. An unenthusiastic like, but still a like :)

Right. And apparently the first cut was more Jyn based but then it became more spectacle based as it went on.

Another fantastic bit - an actual geophysicist talking about licking rocks and mentioning the Salt guy:

Oh, what... don't tell me there are people hating on TLJ because of the salt tasting scene?

It's an expositional moment for sure, but an important one. Without it, we are left thinking it is a planet of snow, just like on Hoth. It tells us, in the simplest, shortest way possible, that it's not snow. It's hardly the clunkiest bit of exposition ever seen.

    I love Crait.

It feels to me like one of the most 'alien' worlds we've seen in SW.

I think it's a wonderful re-imagining of the 'desert planet', turning it into something more 'other-worldly' than the sandy and arid desert lands that have become the staple of Star Wars - be it Tatooine, Jakku, Geonosis, Jedha or even Utaphau, all of which could be parts of the same world. Even the snowy desert world of Hoth is grounded in more Earth-like familiarity.

Crait takes that dry, arid desert, mixes it up with the stark whiteness of Hoth and, with the addition of the vibrant crimson of the soil exposed just under the surface, creates something more not of this earth.

Hold on a second....did you just say that R1, the movie in which every main character DIES, "played things pretty safe"?

I guess I see it differently. Having the good guys die in completion of their mission is one of the reasons I find R1 so unique and powerful.

Given the timeline and the mission everyone dying seems like the most obvious outcome. I thought everyone was going to die before the film started and that's what happened.

Obviously I can't speak for other people's expectations, but in the run up it seemed to be the consensus on shows like Jedi Council that no one was getting out Rogue One alive. I certainly wasn't surprised.
