I personally love this new approach where everything is interconnected and one needs to go "deeper" into the books and comics to learn additional details. For example, before TLJ I read everything set between RotJ and TFA and I enjoyed learning about the origins of the First Order this way. That's why I can view Star Wars as one big separate (fictional) universe I can dive into and explore. This way, I treat everybody as "historical figures" so I don't have any problems if somebody's fate clashed with my expectations and "head canon" (I decided not to invest my hopes in any) and if somebody's backstory isn't properly explained in the movies (Snoke is the obvious one), I am sure it will be explained elsewhere. Just look how much they wrote about Phasma.

i love it too. everything feels cohesive for the most part and there's plenty to like or disregard as you will. maybe characters like Doctor Aphra and Thrawn will show up inthe movies eventually, but if you aren't interested in them, you don't have to read about them. you don't need to watch Rebels, but if you're low on Star Wars, it's just the fix. i'm saving the Poe comics for a rainy day (probably next summer when we're all dying for nine).

Phasma is a great example. everything you wanted to know about the character. it explains things about her in the movies if you have a pressing need to know; otherwise you can dismiss it. full disclosure: thus far, i think it's the absolute worst of the EU books. the only gratifying thing in it for me was the fate of Brendol Hux. beyond that, i have no idea what Dawson was thinking! XD

Question out of pure curiosity, no judging or arguing here: if you voted "Star Wars and I are quits," what makes you still hang out on the Star Wars forum? and what led to you giving up on Star Wars entirely?

interestingly, the one person who selected that choice last posted two and a half months ago, so is probably no longer engaged here (though was never that active to begin with).

Pick and choose for me. I like the sequel trilogy but all the new expanded universe books I do not like at all. Seems more like teases for future movies then real literature. I feel the old expanded universe was not as handcuffed as all this new stuff. Knights of the Old Republic is still my personal favorite Star Wars story. The Star Wars story movies have left me pretty disappointed. So yeah I'm a pretty mixed bag pick and choose is definitely the one for me at this point

i forgot about this thread! the thread where you are free to express opinions such as "Fodesinbeed Annodue" is one the silliest things to ever come out of Star Wars--or really any fantasy franchise, on so many levels. XD

Star Wars has never been so not done, i think.
    i'm sure it will have a long life after 9! : D

Anakin in The Phantom Menace is the best Prequel Anakin. Sure, he's achild, but his actions are rational and easy to empathize with - missing your parents is something all of us felt when we weren't with them. TPM's version is also the best-acted one.

i agree that he's the most rational, but i actually think Hayden Christiansen did consistently okay in RoTS (and better than Lloyd, who i think was kinda awful in many scenes). it's a hard call. nobody really comes out looking "good" in these movies. : o p

There were even better young Anakins than Lloyd (he did fine though).

To be honest, when I see those audition clips I'm hard pushed to say any one is better than the other. I'm not sure which I'd pick just from those.

But what we don't see are all the other auditions and read throughs and chats and interviews that I'm sure those three boys had to do. I'm sure the decision was based on more than just the clips they filmed and showed to us. There simply isn't enough in those snippets for us to make an informed judgement. We're just getting to see the 'best' of all of all three them. We're not being shown the 'worst' of any of them.

Has this devolved into a general fight yet or do I need to step up? (Kidding!!)

I like most things SW. There are some things that I don't like, and some things that have the potential to become things I wouldn't like, but behind it all, SW is a children's story that manages to resonate with many adults, it has a special kind of "magic". Its flaws are easy for me to ignore (after I get mad about them once or twice lol).

I hate broom boy too, he makes me think that there might be a huge time jump between TLJ and Ep. 9, like Ep. 9 could start with the same kid 5 years later. TFA and TLJ took place over a period of...only about a week I think, and a third movie set a few years later would feel like a different story altogether.

i'm with you on this. i honestly don't want a Star Wars that's "for" adults.
i think it would just lose its way like the DCU has.

it's easier for me to appreciate something made for the joy and inspiration of children than to see something that was originally for children repackaged for adults (Happytime Murders, i'm looking at you). XD

I think that's the wrong way of thinking. Star Wars shouldn't be just for kids or just for adults. Great "kids" movies like "The Lion King" and "Toy Story" (and every single other Pixar film) are pleasing for young and old. And why? Because they aren't trying to please a certain target audience. They're just telling a story the way it comes.

you just repeated back what i was saying. XD

just because something is made with children in mind, doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it.
the obverse is not always false, but it's less often true (children being able to enjoy things made for adults).

and a good story certainly doesn't need an MA or R rating.

I see where you're coming from, but I think (I even thought so as a kid, which is kind of funny) that SW has always been best when it was indulging in screwball comedy and at the same time committing to a dark tone. Both things are not necessarily what you will find in movies that are made with children in mind.

i keep having to remind myself that i grew up in a completely different world in which children's programming was very very different.
my generation grew up on Black Beauty and Old Yellar and the abridged (but not remotely sanitized) classics.
dark tones, scary themes, and real horror was never foreign to us.
that's not what i mean when i say Star Wars shouldn't be made just for adults.
