    I've been on a nostalgia kick in terms of shows these past few weeks, so I've been re-watching some old kids shows.

    First up was Power Rangers Beast Morphers.
    Beast Morphers is the latest season of Power Rangers and in a lot of ways a spiritual successor to one of the best seasons - and my personal favorite - Power Rangers RPM. Beast Morphers is good, but I'd hesitate on calling it great right now. Then again, it's better than anything the franchise has done since Dino Charge, so that's a GREAT sign, especially as the first Power Rangers season under Hasbro. I'll watch the second season once it comes to Netflix, but overall I'm just not feeling it as much as other seasons.

    After that I took a break to watch Digimon Tamers after its move from Netflix to Hulu. The show still holds up pretty well after 17-18 years, and I'd even recommend it as a starter anime for elementary schoolers. Episodes 34 on are pretty dark, however, so keep it away from younger views. Tamers is definitely the Evangelion of -mon anime shows; and don't binge it! This series was NOT meant to binged!

    Once I finished Digimon, I returned to the Ranger world to watch a season I knew literally nothing about - Power Rangers Jungle Fury. You see, I've been watching a lot of a YouTuber named Disney Brain, and one of his favorite PR series was Jungle Fury. I personally had stopped watching/aged out of Power Rangers during Mystic Force (the focus was so much on the Red Ranger that he became a turn-off, even as a kid) and I never liked the Jungle Fury costumes. But I've watched at least one episode of just about every other season but this one (...and its predecessor Operation Overdrive), so I thought I'd finally give it a try. Overall, as far as Power Rangers seasons go, this one isn't bad. It's VERY mid-2000's, but there's a charm to shows being dated like that. I can see why some people would like this show; unfortunately the fact that it was sandwiched between one of Power Rangers' worst seasons in Operation Overdrive, and one of their best in RPM, doesn't help this show at all. Casey is a nice Rookie Red, Lily is practically the perfect Yellow Ranger (something that RPM would later utilize), and Theo's a solid Stoic Blue who's not above joining in the fun.* RJ is a very cool mentor; the pizza shop as a base allows for some easy drama and fun humor; and Dai Shi is pretty much everything I wanted in Kylo Ren but never got, so yay on Power Rangers for giving me what Star Wars couldn't?

    2021's Power Ranger series was officially named Dino Fury a few weeks ago. Not that original of a name, nor is the premise, but I'm curious to see what the season holds in store. Dino-based seasons are often considered some of the best (along with the purely space-based ones), and they really haven't messed up a Dino-based season yet (Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, Power Rangers Dino Thunder, Power Rangers Dino Charge and Dino Super Charge). So Dino Fury has some BIG shoes to fill...let's hope they live up to it.

    I'm also watching an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender every now and then to keep it in my Netflix lineup. I already own the Blu-Ray and rewatched the series last year, but there's no limit on how many times a person can watch one of the greatest stories ever told!

    On the more mature side, I'm slowly but surely coming around to Community and The Good Place. It takes me a LOOONG time to get into comedy shows such as this, but once I do, I'm in it for life. I'm pretty scattershot with my Community episodes right now, but I'm mostly sticking to Seasons 1-3, with the occasional Season 5 in there for good measure. The Paintball Assassin episodes are phenomenal.

    For The Good Place, I haven't watched more than the pilot, but I've seen enough clips to know I want to watch more. Janet's the best.

    ...I also promised a friend I'd watch The Lost Kingdom, so maybe I should start that...tomorrow...



    *Theo's actor in Power Rangers is noticeably shorter than his Juken Sentai Gekiranger counterpart, so it's really funny, if a bit distracting, to see him grow from the shortest member of the team to taller than Yellow in every fight. This isn't the first time Power Rangers has done this, but outside of Turbo Blue being a kid who transforms into an adult body, this is the most noticeable.

    I am still on my Asian kick and now I am binging Chinese show The Romance of Tiger and Rose.

    Synopsis: A screenwriter working overtime is transported into her own fantasy script as a minor character which is supposed to die in the third episode. She must find the way to survive the world she created and return home. The story is mainly set in a city ruled by women who takes a hostage in a prince from a defeated city ruled by men. Our heroine is trying to survive while forcing everyone to follow the script. Naturally, everything that can go wrong does. Every trope and cliche of screen writing is mocked. And every gender role of our world is inverted. I laughed at the group of men gossiping how one of them is showing to much skin on the street. The show is perfect for the current times, it's light, not so-serious, hilarious and cute and you know it will end well.

    I've seen all the episodes MANY times (before buying the Blu Ray set I had the DVDs) and when I bought this last year I watched a couple of my favorite episodes but I haven't sat down and watched the whole set until now.

    UPDATE: It does end well. Leaves the door opened for the second season, though it's not necessary. BUT I WANT. :D

    On to the next drama. Korean, Japanese, Chinese...? Only time will tell. I have a queue, lol.

    My gf and I are on a major Stephen King binge lately.

    First we watched Castle Rock, which was pretty cool, both of the seasons. The acting was strong and the mystery intriguing. I’d definitely recommend Castle Rock :)

    The Outsider was even better in many ways, and we do love us some Ben Mendelsohn! The plot here was quite intriguing indeed, although there were some story-telling decisions that I didn’t care for… Like how they kept showing weird stuff without shining a light on it, forcing you out of the story to do some mental gymnastics to keep up. There were several, “but wait, that guy died earlier so what is he doing here now? Is this an alternative timeline?” kind of moments, and they would regularly kill the suspense of disbelief. Still, better than most thriller shows, by a long shot! The Outsider is another definite recommendation from me :D

    Now we’re onto the 1994 TV show version of The Stand, and ough! I had forgotten how bad acting was on TV in them olden days! By the Whills, these are some awful deliveries! Even Ed Harris is bad in this one! Yet, it is kind of charming and the rock music permeating the show is great! :D This one I would recommend to anyone with a special interest in Stephen King-esque supernatural thriller stuff. It’s all right, despite the acting.

    Hm… I wonder what we’re gonna watch next?

    Edit: Having now watched all of The Stand, I take it back. This 6-hour show is bantha poodo and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone; it's at least 4 hours too long, with awful acting and scene after scene after scene of nothing happening at all. And who on earth did the makers chose to drown every scene in the show in up-beat, schmaltzy, heartworming stock-music piano tunes, doing its best to kill dead the few little snippets of drama, chill, and tension that this show manages to muster? Just, why? No, I'm done with this show.

    I am currently watching Legends of Tomorrow, skipping seasons 1-2. Most CW shows are horrible, like arrow or flash. Legends however, has found strength in wackiness.

    Another day, another Asian drama, Korean this time: Mystic Pop-Up Bar.

    A woman sent from Afterlife to settle a grudge of 100.000 souls for her past sins and former Afterlife police officer join forces with a young man who can make people confess the truth by touching them in a Mystical Pop-Up Bar and solve people's problems by visiting them in their dreams. Wacky, funny and surprisingly poignant, 12-episode drama will make you laugh and cry and improve your life, I promise. Available on Netflix, released weekly, ten episodes are out, the last two will be out in the next two days.

    Might be one of the best I've seen in the last few years. If you like found family trope and fantasy set in a modern world, this is a show for you.

    UPDATE: After seeing the last two episodes, I can confirm that the show is as good as I thought.

    Unless it's rom-com, Korea isn't known for it's soft, happy endings. More often than not, the endings of Korean dramas are bittersweet, more bitter than sweet. Not Mystic Pop-Up Bar though. The characters suffered so much in their lives (and some, even Afterlives) that it would totally ruin the amazing story if they didn't get their happy ending. Let's just say, they earned all my tears and then made me happy. These are people you want to go drinking with and both adopt them and be adopted by them. In the end. great fun was had by all. Highly recommended.
