What did Darth Vader start and not finish?

The great Jedi purge.

I agree. Vader was supposed to hunt down and kill all the Jedi. At the start of TFA when Kylo said he would finish what he started, Luke was still alive and Kylo was searching for the map to find Luke and what I would assume try and kill him

 

I think Kylo was talking about killing all the Jedi and bringing sith kind of peace to the galaxy.
Maybe he was even talking about overthrowing his master and rule the galaxy.
And of course it was/is foreshadowing on Ben fulfilling the prophecy and killing Palpatine for good.

 

Another point of view for this line is that he may mean that he didn't completely destroy the Emperor and the Sith. I always thought that

Maybe Kylo knows that the Emperor is still around...

After TFA, I couldnt help but thinking that he actually is an "undercover agent", waiting for the right time to do his job... The problem with that is that the ending of TLJ made him look more of a stereotypical bad guy, rather than the troubled good guy that he probably is...

 

According to Yoda teaching Luke in TESB, "If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will".
That means to me, that the way to come back from the Dark Side is still to be found...
- Plagueis was the first to find the way to come back from the dead.
- The Choosen One is the first who came back from the Sith to be a Jedi again - but this caused its death.
- Kylo will be the one who will return from the Dark Side in whole glory... perhaps a full return to the Light, perhaps a new state mixing some Dark and Light Side teachings...

The deep meaning of all of this is : Everyone can overcome its own anger because love is all. Everyone can be forgiven. Everyone may be given a second chance.

 

Technically, what Vader started was finished midway through ROtJ. Yoda was dead and Luke was not yet a Jedi at that point.

But then again Kylo may have presumed wrongly that it is his destiny to destroy the last Jedi and finish what his grandfather began. Perhaps it actually means finishing what was begun when his grandfather cast Sidious down from the throne room.

 

True balance: "powerful light, powerful darkness."

 

The only thing that makes sense is to become all powerful to rule the galaxy in a way that they feel is just, that goal just became twisted once they fell to the dark side.

becoming all powerful and just always will be twisted.

 

To become all powerful and learn to stop people from dying.

 

I first thought this what he meant, and that we would learn he suffered some kind of loss (sister? hint hint) but that wasn't true.

Since we don't know of anyone he has lost, it wouldn't really make sense if this was his obsession.


I honestly don't think *they* know what they meant. I think it was a way to show he worships Vader. I doubt they have a specific answer. Probably something as poorly thought out as "he wants to rule the galaxy like Vader did in ESB" or something.

 

Yea, I would tend to agree. It could have been just a line at the time. They may expand upon it now but who knows. It has just hit me that is one thing that Anakin wanted and aided in him being lured down the dark path to be able to do it. TBH, that seen transpired between Anakin and Padme. She is the only one that heard him say it and she is dead now, so how would Kylo know it.

It seems pretty straight forward to me. Vader, at his darkest most ambitious and "free" moment says: "Join me and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son."

Kylo is seeking to rule the galaxy. Plain and simple. He and his grandfather both have a disdain for political posturing and believe in the Rule of One over All; in the interest of the One knowing what is best for the Rest.

Killing off the Jedi is just a necessary act in order for the greater goal to be realized.
