There's not one thing, its 3 things that you could change that would dramatically improve the prequels. The first and worst is the dialogue! George writes some of the worst dialogue imaginable. The biggest problem with this is he knew he write poor dialogue, but went ahead and did it anyway. As far back as the originals, the actors were telling him his dialogue sucked...I have no idea why he kept on doing it.

The second problem is the actor playing darth vader. George simply couldn't have picked a more wooden or less suitable person to play Vader. He sucked BIG time!

And finally Jar Jar. Just an awful, terrible, disgusting character! Universally hated by all. I know he was made for children and that kids probably liked him. But you can created a character for kids that adults love too. Jar jar was horrible.

Fix these 3 problems and you fix the prequels. I'm one of the few people who love the prequels just as much as the OT. Yeah it had its problems, but the highs were higher than the lows.

    Because, let's be honest here.
As much as we all recognize Lucas is a brilliant story man, he's also a self-absorbed elitist art nouveau control freak who is clearly torn between wanting public accolades and retaining artistic integrity to the point of building the largest independent cinematic commercial empire in the attempts to do both at the same time.

You have to be a special kind of pompous, controlling, and obsessive person to effectively make your own personal Hollywood because you don't like the way Hollywood tells you to do your job.
Most independent artiste's would have just made indie films and called it good until they gained enough stature to be able to sway things their way.

Lucas threw down the paint brush and built his own studios to not only protect and serve his projects, but to take on, serve, and control other people's projects.

So it's not odd to me that he would continue to write the dialogue in spite of full well knowing it's going to suffer.
It's for the integrity of the art, under this mindset.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

i would personally change the script to be written by someone else. As much as I respect george lucas and his directing and vision. the great actors performance i feel suffered from some of the dialogue.

In reading my earlier post, I realized that it could come off as if I hold this against Lucas.
    To be very clear - I don't.

In fact, the very thing that made things a tad difficult every step of the way with Star Wars, especially with the prequels, is the very thing that made Lucas succeed and made him make Star Wars in the first place. This unique blend of personality traits is a large part of what stamps Lucas as Lucas.
It's what makes THX what it is, and that is one of all time favorite films from Lucas just because it's really about as unabridged and raw Lucas doing his "pure cinema" as I'll likely ever get to see (since he's not going to release his pure cinema tone poems to the public).

The adjectives above may sound unflattering, but I don't think so - not to me.
I don't think lowly of Lucas for having these traits - it's part of his chemistry. He's an art nouveau punk who straight up stuck his middle finger at the system and made his own system, and never compromised his artistic vision for business bartering concessions. Quite the opposite. Frequently he would sacrifice business upper-hands just to keep control. It was more a happy accident that sometimes that idea paid off early on...like with the merchandising - he just wanted to make sure the advertising didn't misrepresent his art.

It's a rare bird to have such an artiste at such a massive scale, and for so long. Artiste's don't typically rise to such heights because they also aren't psychotically devoted to their art in such a way as to go invent their own industry parallel to the mainstream to compete with the mainstream...and then win.

Lucas is the cinematic equivalent of rolling up Steve Jobs and Bill Gates into one person.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

I would had started with an older looking Anakin, which would had made the relationship between Padme and him more believable.

I would have all the alien races speaking their native languages with English subtitles. TPM is a great movie, but could you imagine how much better it would be if the Gungans and Neimoidians didn't speak Basic with Earth style accents.

I know the remit of this is just the one thing that I would change, however my list is somewhat more:
    • Instead of Revenge of the Sith being one film, have it be 2 that way Anakin's journey into darkness could be better explored- I would have liked to have seen the transition from defending a beloved friend and mentor to marching into the Jedi Temple and killing everyone there.
    • Also, regarding the Jedi Purge, have it be comparable with real world genocides. Initially have Palpatine spread rumours about the Jedi and subtly disseminate anti-Jedi propaganda to alienate the public that way when the Purge does happen, fewer people would be willing to help them and laypeople would be even willing to give any suspected Jedi up to Imperial authorities. A slow transition that has its origin in Attack of The Clones. Initially have it be total war (them vs us) and move into utopian rhetoric- they must die to for us to build a new future.
    • Change the role of Darth Maul to behind the scenes assassin and have him be murdered by his own master instead of dying in a duel with young Obi-Wan as this would show the depths that Palpatine would go to protect the image he has cultivated and his willingness to kill or discard those who he has worked with for ages.

What I would change is that Padmé doesn't die. Also, Anakin should become the most well known Jedi, not a Sith. I'll reply w/more.

A prophet of a new galactic religion that bridges the gap between separatists and the republic, exposing and ruthlessly expunging the machinations of the Sith before eventually losing control of the crusade he instigated. Yeah, I can dig that.

Sounds like you would enjoy the works of my favourite comic writer Pat Mills. A lot of his stuff is great but some is... not so great (mainly because of the lack of subtlety regarding his politics); a lot of his stuff is anti-establishment:
    • Psycho-Killer- exorcist with unusual methods
    • Marshal Law- superhero hunter
    • ABC Warriors- robots designed for war wander the galaxy bringing peace
    • Judge Dredd (a number of these)
    • Slaine- think Celtic Conan with the power of the warp spasm
    • Ro-Jaws- story of eponymous foul mouthed sewage droid
    • Ro-Busters-robots saving people from disasters sponsored by Howard Quartz
    • Nemesis The Warlock- eponymous alien warlock fights genocidal human supremacist Torquemada
    • Hook Jaw (Action!)- angry shark with a harpoon in its face
    • Third World War (Acts I- IV)
    • Flesh- in response to overpopulation, farmers are sent back in time to harvest the meat of dinosaurs
    • American Reaper- a dystopian reality where wealthy elites can download their consciousness into chips and have them implanted in young bodies, reapers hunt them down
    • Invasion- fascist Russians (Volgan Empire) take over Europe after a 6 minute war, a character based on Margaret Thatcher is killed on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral and a London lorry driver called Bill Savage becomes a figure in a partisan resistance
    • Savage- continuation of Invasion- also robots and teleporting tigers
    • Chronicles of Sha- reincarnated witch takes revenge on those who betrayed her in a future setting
    • Requiem Vampire Knight- Nazi bad man dies and finds himself reborn into a world where values are inverted and evil rewarded with aesthetics of Legacy of Kain
    • Greysuit- traumatised super powered agents
    • Claudia Vampire- same world as requiem but with a female vampire
    • Finn- Lovecraftian horror meets militant environmentalism
    • Black Siddha- elements of Indian folktales told in contemporary London
    • The Redeemer (based on House Cawdor from Necromunda)
    • Defoe- former Leveller is charged with dealing with a zombie plague in a clockpunk 1600s Britain, also rich people have magic powers because of course they do
    • Accident Man- an assassin who makes things look like accidents and has what he describes as post-murder-tension
    • Charley's War- who has not heard of this?

    Maybe...if I enjoyed reading comics.
    But I don't.

When I bought comics it was basically for one purpose: the art.
I'll "read" a comic if it's silent and told with only pictures, but I hate reading bubble text. It's like reading subtitles and I also hate that. I would rather just not understand the words coming out of characters' mouths than have to look away from the visual narration of the scene to read a subtitle.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Some of the most successful and personally fulfilling projects Lucas was attached to were products of ‘writer’s room’ structures. He didn’t just fair well in this sort of environment. He SOARED! Bouncing ideas off of others brings out the best in him. The results are difficult to argue with.

What he’d seemingly advocated for, departed from, and eventually returned to - was the capacity of ‘showrunner’. An executive producer who dictates the terms of the narrative, but then employees a staff of capable individuals to implement that vision under guidance.

Ostensibly, he’d discovered a winning formula and deliberately abandoned it. I, for one, find that very odd. Artistic integrity or not.

    Artistic integrity? or ego?
Is there a difference between the two?

happens to many a great artists...I'd argue they're one in the same conceptually.

Actually, I'm slowly beginning to disagree with myself a tad.

This because when I sit down and think about how Lucas communicates in film, I started to realize that the PT is actually closer to his real style because he firstly speaks through the image.
Second is the edit and music.
And a distant third is dialogue.

When I look at it this way, the PT speaks loud and clear because what he does is flip the method on its head.

The imagery is the main text, and the dialogue is the subtext.
Whatever you would say through images as subtext normally is now what you say in dialogue, and whatever you would say as dialogue as the main text normally becomes the imagery.

If you rewatch the PT with this thinking cap and lenses on, it radically changes in very interesting ways.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

And for even more added effect, you can rewatch the PT while standing upside down with your head in a bucket of piranha fish. You get a vastly different experience. Guaranteed.

I don’t know. I think I’d prefer to watch a movie like a movie and not the world’s loudest silent film. But that’s me. You have way different priorities and I respect the absolute hell out of them, man. I truly do :)

    Word.

I readily admit I have really esoteric interests.
So when I run across an esoteric artist, who isn't just being "provocative", I tend to take interest...at least for a while. It depends on how loud their palett is as well. I like subtle esoteric artists the most.

Artists like Time Burton get kind of boring to me pretty fast.
Meanwhile of the popular artists (aside from Lucas), probably my go-to is Ridley Scott when he waxes philosophical (which...he doesn't always).

Although....Cary Joji Fukunaga has my eye, but we'll see where he goes.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

I agree with those who say that Jar Jar was a terrible character. He ruind the entire saga in my opynion. Star Wars is supposed to be a serious adventurous saga, not a comedy.
