I voted Qui Gon because his death set off a ripple effect that killed most of the other options. If he had lived and trained Anakin, then maybe he wouldn't have turned to the dark side and in turn wouldn't have helped (In some form) kill most of the others (NOT ALL!).

Anakin Skywalker proved himself as the Chosen One and ended the empire, “destroying” the sith. Sadly this was sone too late and that was sad. And kanan’s death as his love with hera was shown, gets me to tears..

Cried quite frequently during my full marathon, but both Satine's and Kanan's deaths broke my (no swearing, please) heart.

Luke's death has hit me the hardest.

Having him say goodbye to his family in a heroic self-sacrifice, and watching him sit upon the rock watching the twin sets set just strikes a cord with me.

I can't tell you how many times I've watched our singular sun set waiting for "life" and adventure to begin, tired of the chores and burdens. And I can't tell you how many times I've been angry and frustrated that I couldn't do the thing I wanted do, but just sat around "wasting our time." The lessons learned, the lessons failed in between my adventures.
And I can't tell you many times life starts to go smoothly, only for it to come crashing down again, and I decided to hide. So I leave the social circles I inhabited before.
Luke telling Leia that no one is ever truly gone, not to lose hope. That's something I would do, almost hopeless myself, but knowing when to give others a hope greater than mine. And then... he's gone. He leaves the way we first met him. Looking off to the horizon, to the future.

I can't help but feel like my story will end like that. Not as cool looking and my body vanishing into thin air (though that would be neat!). I only hope my life inspires the people around me the way Luke's inspired a galaxy.

I'm changing my answer to Luke. Nearly 3 years after the fact and every time I watch the scene it hits me almost as hard as it did the first time. Just incredibly beautiful and poignant, Mark, Rian and John Williams all deserve massive credit. I still stand by what I said about Han's death, but Luke's felt like it was truly the end of something.

I have to agree with the posts about Luke’s death. I think if Carrie Fisher had lived and Leia was intended to die in Episode IX, that would probably be tied with Luke’s (if not sadder than his), but because they were limited in how they could make her death happen on screen, I think it’s just a bit below Luke’s. (Not to mention, most people expected Leia to die because of her already-limited role in the film.) Her death still brought me to tears, though –– even though I knew it would happen, seeing it realized on screen finally brought me a sense of closure to Carrie’s death as well.

I think I’ve mentioned this before in this forum, but Han’s death was spoiled for me before The Force Awakens, so the emotional impact was diminished a bit. (I still cried at that one, too.) Luke’s, however, was entirely unexpected. It’s hard to imagine the Star Wars universe without Luke Skywalker, so I was devastated by his death, even though it was the perfect way for him to go out.

I know his depiction in The Last Jedi is extremely divisive, but as a longtime Luke fan, I felt like his story really came full-circle. I was really moved seeing him come back, reunite with Leia and restore her hope while allowing her and the Resistance to escape, and then ultimately facing Kylo again, doing it in the most pacifistic way possible. He owned up to his past mistakes, and honestly, I think his portrayal in The Last Jedi is perfect for that reason –– it allows us to see Luke as human instead of a god. Even though so many of us idolized him growing up (and many of us still do), at the end of the day, he’s human and makes mistakes like the rest of us. The difference is that, in the end, he’s the hero of the story, so he’s always going to come back and save the day. He essentially went out the same way that Obi-Wan did, and personally, I wouldn’t have wanted him to die any other way, because like Rey says, Luke died with peace and purpose.

In the past, I would’ve said Anakin and Satine’s deaths without hesitation. And while those scenes still hit pretty hard, I feel like the deaths of Leia Organa during The Rise of Skywalker may take the cake.

Leia passing away damn near brought me to tears on both of my theatrical viewings of Episode 9. (And I rarely cry at movies, especially in the theater.) Hearing her theme play at her funeral, watching Chewbacca lose at after losing one of his last remaining friends from the OT, and seeing Kylo/Ben discussing it with the memory of Han all at once made for a very emotional chunk of the movie. Plus, it felt poetic for R2 to be there for her death just like he was there for her birth, as well as the first scene we ever saw her in during ANH.

This is EXACTLY how I felt. To be honest, I was really impressed that they were able to do what they did with what I’m assuming was a body double –– despite the obvious limitations, it was overall really well-executed. It made me cry the first time I watched the film in theaters, too. Chewie’s reaction to her death was devastating, too. JJ really destroyed me with that whole chunk of the film, it was SO emotional. I got choked up when Poe was talking to Leia’s body after she had passed and telling her he didn’t know how to do what she did as a leader, too.

You can say what you want about JJ and some of the choices he made in The Rise of Skywalker, but he really gave Leia (and Carrie) the best sendoff she could’ve possibly gotten. That was my greatest concern going into the film, and I was SO happy with how they handled her character. The film felt like such a fitting tribute to her, and I love how she was able to have a front-and-center role despite Carrie not being there to film new material. I couldn’t agree more with anything you just said!

In the films, I would go with Luke and Leia. Luke was my favourite Star Wars character and to see him go (albeit as a true Jedi Master) was hard to watch. However, Leia's death ,because of the passing of the great Carrie Fisher still fresh in my mind, felt more emotional. Seeing all the rebel fighters paying tribute to Leia was touching because you know that they were really saying goodbye to Carrie (just my opinion).

Difficult to choose one. Historically, I'd say Yoda. As a kid it really upset me when he died. I suppose with the more recent content, character deaths have become more frequent (not always necessary, IMO), so perhaps there's another than is sadder. Leia comes to mind, particularly in the way it was done and how much emphasis was put on other characters mourning her. Neither Han nor Luke got as much "characters react" time when they passed.

That said, I voted for the Rogue One team because that really surprised me when I first saw it. Didn't expect them all to die, and each of them was heroic and had pathos to spare.

Such a hard question, um for me it was Yoda as well. I really loved the character that Yoda had become when I was younger, and when I first saw his death it actually upset me.

Though, Vader's death was also quite saddening since he had just redeemed himself and even though he could see that his son wanted to save him, he knew that he didn't have much time left and probably wouldn't be allowed to go freely. Due to the fact that he'd be charged war crimes due to his involvement in the Empire.
Han Solo's death was also a sad moment for me, but for some reason I didn't feel it as badly as I did for Yoda and Vader.

    Hmm.

Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru had the nastiest deaths- burning, smoldering skeltons? I wonder why Luke doesn't mention this later on?

I might have said ROTJ Vader- but there's stuff that's potentially too sentimental, as Return of the Jedi, likes to head into. (i.e. Luke- take off this mask, so that I can look into you with my own eyes.) Seriously, does Vader actually need to look at Luke without the mask, when he's seeing through he mask? Shouldn't it be the other way around? (Luke, do you want to see your dad's face before he dies?)

    Hmm.

I'm beginning to wonder about TROS Kylo Ren's death. There's something sad about the heroic knight figure giving his life for his lady. Also, his death was sudden. TLJ Luke's death was sad as well.

If frozen Han in TESB was a death scene; I would have said Han's freezing, then. Fisher's expression conveys the sadness real well.
