Will we ever see the footage cut from Rogue One and Solo?

  1. Of course we will, they're just being saved to make money in the future - it's Star Wars baby!

As the title says, do you think we'll ever see the footage cut from Rogue One and Solo?

Providing stuff was kept in safe storage, most films eventually have their deleted footage surface (in fact many do even when it wasn't preserved), and obviously high profile films such as these will have had all their original footage safely archived rather than dumped in a cardboard box in the garden shed.

Even unsuccessful films eventually seem to have their footage eventually released, if it still exists, in this day and age of mass media consumption. Everything from Alien3 being reissued in its work print form fully ADR'd by the original cast, to the Donner cut of Superman 2, two versions of a terrible Exorcist prequel, raw "what if" editions of the likes of Hellraiser Bloodline and Nightbreed etc. etc.

Obviously all the original Star Wars films have now long since had their deleted footage released across various media, no matter how hilarious in some instances that footage proved to be (those are some terrible wampas) or how awkward the acting was at Anchorhead.

As has been proven in documentaries such as Heart of Darkness, Lost in La Mancha and Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau, often its fascinating to see how a film may have been going wrong and fans enjoy and appreciated watching the honesty and struggle in getting a film to the screen.

Do you feel the Rogue One and Solo footage will ever be released, as everything else eventually seems to, that its solely being set aside for a day when more money can be made from it, or are we now in a different more corporate era that doesn't wish to involve fans in seeing what wasn't working, something that will remain forever under lock and key?

I don't think we will see the footage. I'd love to see it but I don't think Disney is keen on letting those secrets go or even looking like they had made a mistake. The mouse is a fine tuned machine.

    R1: Maybe

    Solo: No way

The only reason I put R1 in the ‘Maybe’ column is because so many deleted scenes found their way in the trailers (Jyn staring down the Tie fighter), so maybe we get a director’s cut years down the road.

The only reason I put Solo in the ‘No’ column is thst they would have to pay Lord & Miller since that would be their movie version. I loved Solo but I would be very interested to see the Lord & Miller version just out of curiosity.

Probably not. Rogue One would be the most interesting because based on some quotes from the actors Gilroy changed the move a lot. Howard had to reshoot stuff, but I don't think he changed the story. Rogue One changed a lot the last year before it was released.

I'm curious, why do you say you "hope not"? The deleted footage from the OT is for the most part utterly awful, in my opinion only ROTJ had strong deleted footage in respect of Luke building his saber and Jerjerrod's conflict with his orders and Vader, but almost everything else happily belongs on the cutting room floor... HOWEVER, for me it was all still interesting to see.

Are you not even remotely curious, no matter how hypothetically 'bad' it may be? The Anchordhead scenes are, forgive my frankness and Cammie avatar... pure sh*t, but don't detract from the original film and as bad as they are, I still value having being able to see them. And just hope one day I may see these snapshots of Rogue One and Solo no matter how poor they may hypothetically be, just out of curiosity. I want to see the lion-man Dryden Vos and his stuffed Ewok, I want to see Krennic pointing a blaster at Tarkin's face, even if there's no complete alternate cut of either movie, even if scenes are just fragments, I still want to see what they were going for.

I love both movies and just want to experience their different visions, no matter how fragmented, even if it's just to say "thank god that was cut!".

Like I said, the Anchorhead scenes are dreadful, but to see Luke and his friends, even if Mark Hammill is overacting and hammy, is a nice insight into the galaxy far far away even if it's terrible.

I loved the 40 minute abridged version of Blade Runner made entirely of deleted footage and alternate voice overs even though it's complete crap, because i got to see LA 2019 in a new perspective, even if it's cheesy, sleazy or doesn't work.

Blade Runner's boxset of "here's literally ALL of Blade Runner, take your pick" is a masterclass in releasing a film. I just wish the new Star Wars films would be treated with that same respect... all because I love them.

R1 because they have never acknowledged there was a problem "all movies have reshoots".

Solo, because they fired L&M over what they did. they wouldn't want anyone saying "hey, that was pretty good."

We actually do have deleted scenes from Solo, just not the Lord & Miller footage. We have not seen ANY deleted scenes from Rogue One which angers me and the new 4K Blu-ray won't have any deleted scenes either. I'd love to see the original cut of Rogue One.

I like both movies, so I’d like to at least read a rundown of their original stories at the very least. Even if the original plot synopsis for both movies were similar to the finished products, I’d like to see what tonal differences there would have been or if any characters‘ fates were changed. If things had played out differently, both films could have been a lot different.

Who knows? Maybe in some alternate universe where Jyn and Cassian did end up surviving, we really could have gotten a Rogue Two with them and the Bothans stealing the Death Star II Plans. Or in some parallel reality, the Lord and Miller cut of Solo would have become a smash hit and a sequel would be an inevitability rather than something we have to campaign for. (Ahem, #makesolo2happen. Release it as a Disney+ show or something...)

I like to imagine that Lucasfilm has some warehouse where they’re keeping the original script and deleted scenes from both these movies in some box like at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

    Rogue one yes, solo, maybe.
    Ever is a long time.
One day, KK will die, and a lot of the other people involved with those two movies will die.

revenue streams will spring up and dry up.
Who knows what they will try to package and sell to fans not yet born?

I think there’s an interesting, darker cut of RO with less hugging and daddy issues for brunette British girl Mary Sue (you could say that about all 5 KK SW films).
There’s a sillier, less dogmatic cut of Solo.
But you need to bring the original directors of Solo back to edit their version of Solo. That’s unlikely to happen and will never happen without a long delay that would alter their thinking and choices.
We may get the raw footage, but I don’t see a ton of benefit of seeing any of it without it cut together as intended or in the best way possible.
