I think that TLJ was about how luke was weakened by the dark side influences disturbing the balance in the force. TLJ will probably make more sense with the coming of ep. IX.

Thinking back to PM the Jedi council seemed disillusioned by the coversion of the dark side inside the old republic. The Jedi can be disillusioned and weakened, and fooled by the dark side.

I think this is the case with TLJ as well. Plus luke seemed to lose confidence in the Jedi understanding of the force after the trauma of being so betrayed by his nephew.

I think all these things weakened and deceived Luke. So I am not ready to call Luke, Jake Skywalker. Hero's have flaws, and weaknesses as well. Yoda said as much in TLJ.

The force must grow beyond. So I think TLJ is an integral part of the saga.

A good friend of mine wanted to see TFA because a co-worker got the entire office excited for the film yet he never had any interest for TLJ which was odd. I guess only real Star Wars fans would never skip a Star Wars film. He hasn't called me at all about TROS as well, and I have spoken to him on numerous occasions. I think the general movie going audience just goes out to see films that interest them for the moment.

I don't know you or your friend, so I don't want to draw conclusions, but in general I think there's no such thing as a 'real fan'...just fans with different interests.

What is a real fan? How much enjoyment and fanaticism is required to earn realness, and how do we judge levels of fanaticism inside of another mind for realness?

Usually I find fans just have differences of what they enjoyed, and the more content exists, and the longer it exists, the greater the diversity of enjoyed aspects among fans.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

In the long run I probably won't skip it. I certainly have issues with the film, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit and it has some of my favorite moments/fights in the franchise.

Plus my OCD doesn't allow for skipping. So there's that.

Let me elaborate, I was shocked that my friend of 25 years called me on opening night of TFA and asked if I wanted to go out and see it. He said one of his co-workers is a fan and he got the entire office excited because there hasn't been a Star Wars film in years, so he wanted to see it with me because he knows I'm a Star Wars fan.

I told him all the tickets are sold out. I got a late showing and I purchased my tickets the day it went on sale. Nevertheless, we got lucky and found a theater that doesn't do assigned seating so we were able to buy tickets. After the show, we went to a restaurant by the theater and watched the Star Wars fans who dressed up in costume walk by. We had a good time, so I assumed he became a fan or at least enjoyed the film.

Since then we've gone out and seen other films, he is my work out partner, and we hang out allot. So I assumed when TLJ was released we would see it. This time I did not pre-order tickets I just went to a theater that doesn't do assigned seating and I had no problem seeing TLJ on opening night. He never called me about it, he never talks to me about Star Wars and I don't want to impose my fandom on my friends because all my friends know I'm really into the franchise.

If he went out to see the TLJ we would have discussed it, because after the gym we hang out and talk for an hour or so depending on the conversation, about everything. He has no interest in Star Wars. And now that TROS is two weeks away and he hasn't brought it up, I'm comfortable enough to say he will skip it.

I read the books, novels, comic books, BTS books, art books, visual dictionaries, etc, I collect the toys, I have all the films on VHS, DVD, Blue ray, when you come to my house you know I'm a Star Wars fan. My friend is a sports fan, basket ball, football, soccer, and a car fan. He loves cars. Anywho, there are all types of Star Wars fans some more so than others. I don't think Star Wars interest him and there is nothing wrong with that.

I won't say REAL Star Wars fan ever again. :D

I was just shocked that he wasn't interested in all the mysteries of TFA and had no interest in TLJ after we had such a good time.

Star Wars is not for everybody.

TLJ has without a doubt been a polarizing movie for a lot of people. It upended a lot of expectations. And the movie lived up to Luke's line - "This is not going to go the way you think."

In time and given the context of viewing The Rise Of Skywalker, I think people's view of The Last Jedi is going to change. It's the second act of the sequel trilogy, and with traditional three act stories there are some standard conventions:

The second act, also referred to as "rising action", typically depicts the protagonist's attempt to resolve the problem initiated by the first turning point, only to find themselves in ever worsening situations. Part of the reason protagonists seem unable to resolve their problems is because they do not yet have the skills to deal with the forces of antagonism that confront them. They must not only learn new skills but arrive at a higher sense of awareness of who they are and what they are capable of, in order to deal with their predicament, which in turn changes who they are. This is referred to as character development or a character arc. This cannot be achieved alone and they are usually aided and abetted by mentors and co-protagonists

This is a similar structure to what we saw in the original trilogy. I remember seeing TESB in the theater in 1980. Nobody knew where the story was going after that. There was a general level of anxiety among Star Wars fans at that time about where things would go. The Rebels were defeated at Hoth and had to go into hiding. Han was captured and frozen in carbonite. Would he even survive? Luke left his training on Dagobah? Would he turn to the dark side? And then he was defeated by Vader at Cloud City, losing his hand! Oh, and Vader's revelation? I thought that Vader was lying to Luke. Even James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader, thought that Vader was lying. And Luke was left questioning Obi-Wan, who had been his spirit guide for two movies. We all had to wait three years for those story threads to be resolved in Return Of The Jedi.

I suspect that we may be in store for some similar plot resolutions once the audience can fully digest The Rise Of Skywalker. And the sequel trilogy will absolutely need to be viewed as a whole to be regarded as a complete work.

Whenever I do a saga rewatch, I'll definitely watch TLJ. Even though it's my least favorite Star Wars movie. I really don't like a lot of it (especially the opening space battle), but there are good things in the film to enjoy

I agree. The Last Jedi has wiped out any excitement I have for the new film and it retroactively reached back in time and ruined my enjoyment of the old movies. I'm clearly still a star wars fan (otherwise I wouldn't be here) but I have to completely ignore The Last Jedi, the damage done to the characters and the overall story is immense. Easiest way to deal with it is to see it how it really is - disney canon isn't real star wars, it's just fan fiction. This at least makes it bearable.

Sorry. I get what you meant now.
It's so rare that anyone uses the phrase earnestly instead of as a "no true Scottsman" arguement, so I took it in that ilk. But I see now you really meant it as an actual categorical class between actual non-fans and fans, not between fans.

    All good! :D

For my sister Star Wars is just Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.

She despises Return of the Jedi but considers it Lawrence of Arabia next to Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones from which she did not recover enough to even make a pass at Revenge of the Sith or anything since though she seems to be softening to the point she may try Rogue One one day.

However she is a hard core fan of those first two movies despite hating everything she has seen since.

Some folks only like Star Wars too so there have been angry splitters since 1980 and tons since 1999.

I not only skip Rocky 5 but actively ignore its existence and bought the 1-4 set and then it is straight to Balboa and Creed I & II.

The flick is so skip demanding the company actually sells a set without it all these years later.

I also love how meta "there can be only one" turns out to be with Highlander because it is true for me.

Alien 3 doesn't exist for me other than an object of my ire and disgust but 4 counts even though it is really bad too.

Rambo 3 is discarded as well.

    I can't talk. I'll pitch anything.

Both Middle Earth trilogies middle part must be the extended editions or I won't watch them.

Hell, I'm inclined to not banish the prequels exactly but consider them increasingly as else world ancillary materials that are definitely Star Wars but in a different universe/continuity than Rogue One forward. Sort of a Kelvin timeline thing and Solo which I like much more is about the same being in yet another pocket universe than either the prequels or "my" first Star Wars saga of R1 though Rise (which barely is hanging in and could also become an else world epilogue over time and we just end with the Last Jedi).

Oops, I voted before reading the opening post. Anyway, I voted yes. TLJ is not my favorite episode, but has strong moments. The way Luke was handled has grown on me. What I dislike the most about the movie are the stupid, slapstick jokes (belching casino alien, rock hitting caretakers wheelbarrow,...) and the way the plot moves forward (So the cruiser is trapped, but Finn and Rose are able to travel to Canto Bight, why can't they just evacuate the entire crew this way, why can't they just send THEM to call for help? And what's the point of guarding the escape pods when ESCAPING is the whole idea?). But still, philosophically it fits within the entire saga and touches the essence.

There are bad, ok, good and excellent Star Wars movies. I watch them all, even though I can see their flaws (especially the PT fake CGI, bad acting). They all have their place within the bigger story of Star Wars.

TLJ is the only film in the sequel trilogy that I have any desire to watch again.

Just so we're all clear here, @Solo.
I meant this in earnest - not in a coy way.

I actually am saying, "Oh, man. I'm sorry", because that would be a rough experience if I were in your shoes and only liked 1/3rd of the new saga films.

If you don't like the film, read the book or watch the Kabuki version.

Perhaps I would suggest that you read the novel adaptation. In my view it is better than the film and in my view, most novels are better than films anyway. The power of Hollywood cannot live up to the power of your imagination.

I hope folks get something out of this idea, because I love it when people enjoy Star Wars, but I have to note that this is't true for me.

Don't get me wrong; I read. Mostly non-fiction.

Nothing beats the screen for me.
I usually don't enjoy reading fiction because, for me, it's like describing a painting and telling me that my imagination is better than seeing the actual painting.

My imagination is indeed great fun, but there's nothing quite like being smacked in the eyeballls by someone else's imagination. Especially when it has motion.

My imagination is lit aflame and inspired by experiencing a film.

Of course, I also hold that if all you want is story, then don't watch a movie.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

I am inclined to disagree. When I read, my third eye is well and truly open and it is like watching a film. Sometimes I look up at the clock on my bedroom wall to find that it is midnight and my eyes are sore.
