I wouldn't go anywhere near calling them hacks. Just poor fits for the material given.
And that video isn't what I would call anything close to similar to the video storm after TLJ. It is so much more reasoned and paced than the "scree" Star Wars is dead nonsense. It doesn't even call it dead or any of that toxic nonsense.

I think when given an existing franchise like Star Wars and Star Trek, JJ doesn't respect the source, or doesn't do it enough. Even though I said I'd never watch anything JJ Abrams ever makes again, I wonder how he would do with a stand alone movie not tied to any franchise. Has he already done that?

I actually think he overly respects it, meaning he can't help but defer to the nostalgia of it.
TFA, Into Darkness, TROS all suffer at times from it, IMO, and TFA does the least of all because it actually works there as a refresher but in the other two it's just browbeating.

His standalone work is fine. I think he works best as a producer/story creator. Very similar to how George Lucas was post-ANH and pre-TPM.
Indiana Jones, ESB, ROTJ, Willow.....inspired storytelling from George.

I see what you mean from a certain point of view, but I think he defers to the nostalgia at the expense of the movie. Examples being Palpatine's inclusion in the ST and the Tatooine ending of TROS.

The 2009 Star Trek was a victim of this. For whatever reason he wanted to show the main characters at the academy together but also have them in their traditional roles, all within a few days time. Those two things don't compute. They were all different ages and should have been at different stages of their careers when they joined the Enterprise crew. JJ mangled the story to fit this scenario where he could have it all. But that's Trek, whatevs...

I feel that if JJ really loved either franchise*, he would have made much, much better movies than TFA, TROS or any of the Trek reboots. Or, he really did love one or both and is just not that good at it.

*I believe JJ is on record as not being a Star Trek fan.

Oh it's 100% at the expense of the movie. I'm not trying to say it works lol.

I think it works best in TFA because it's an appetizer. It's trying to reel people back in after a decade of not being in on Star Wars. It needed to be good and bring back all the warm fuzzies. It did that. It was good, maybe not great, but certainly good and gave the vast majority of fans the warm Star Wars fuzzies.

The only thing I really liked from JJ was Lost and at the end of that series I was lost... and I know he was just the creator I checked IMDB. ( if you watch Star Trek episode: Space Seed '67, Star Trek '09, and Star Trek: Into the Darkness, it's a good Trek marathon)
Now, I'm just worried he's gonna ruin the DC Universe with Justice League Dark. Warner Bros. just wants billion-dollar films... it's gonna be a rude awakening for the WB. :p

...and YUP, I watched TRoS 4x more than TFA 3x.

You have to give Super8 a try, imo JJ's best movie.

No. TLJ is much more enjoyable for me. I watched TROS twice. After I intensely disliked it the first time I went back a few days later with a casual fan to see if my second reaction was better and what my casual fan friend thought of it. We both hated it and I doubt I'll ever watch the thing again. TLJ I watched about six times, three of those times in the theater.

TFA was one I rewatched many times, I came to really love that film upon second and third viewing and it became part of my regular rotation with IV, V and VI. I've seen it at least ten times now, although have not watched it in over a year now.

For the record the film I've seen the LEAST is Solo...I saw it only once and never, ever want to see it again. I've also only seen RotS three times, twice in theaters. It remains my least favorite of all the primary 9 films. (An unpopular opinion I know, but I absolutely cannot stand Episode III).

I think you are right, he just cannot challenge or put through the crucible the characters and material so he in a remix loop and as long as he isn't on a box checking campaign then he can do that well and when he does that it is still tolerable.

His idea of a sequel trilogy was to reskin the original trilogy which is pretty shallow stuff to me. Fun and entertaining but lacking substance, depth, and freshness.

    Star Wars flavored cotton candy.

I always thought of TFA as the cotton candy of the ST. It's good. You like it but too much of that isn't good for you. A good treat every so often.
TLJ is the meat and veggies. Sure you don't always want to eat it, you just want to skip to dessert. But you need it to stay healthy.
