Would a TV Show have been better? Will there be more films?

I've been thinking about something and it makes a lot of sense when you think about it. This thread isn't about whether or not you approve of a Solo film. At this point, it is what it is. But I started thing...

There is a LOT of backstory to Han Solo. And to be honest, I'm kind of interested in the process of what made Disney think a stand-alone film was the best option (beside the reason of $$$). When I view the back story of Han Solo, I don't believe it involved one pivotal moment or story that lead to the character we know and love. I view it as a slow progression over the course of his young-adult years. We know he's Corelian, he saves Chewbacca, he meets Lando and wins the Falcon, he owe's money to Jabba, he has a "wife". There is so much there that I seriously question the quality of a 2-2.5 hour movie. I think there maybe too much quantity and not enough quality.

Perhaps the story DOES involve a pivotal moment. If it does, I believe Han had to be fairly young, no older than 20, for this to happen because so much has happened in his lifetime. I also don't believe this moment would involve anything I've mentioned above. I feel like it would have to be something new that we haven't heard of. The most pivotal moment I can think of though would be meeting Chewie. But alas I digress...

I seriously wonder if a TV show would've been the better route. Focusing on the scum and villainy and using props at Pinewood would allow the show to be dark, and more affordable for Disney. I think casting of a young Han Solo would make people less hesitant for some reason just because it would be a TV show and people could adjust to the new character over a longer period of time. I also think it would allow for awesome intricate details a Han Solo movie won't be able to tell. Which leads me to my next point.

With only 2-2.5 hours of film time, only a few of the plot points of Han's life can be hit. If this movie does succeed, you can bet there will be more Han Solo movies because he is such an interesting character. If we are to know about his backstory, it should be all or nothing and not just tying up loose ends.

I've said enough. What do you guys think?

Yeah, like @appfanincaaland says, my thoughts were drawn to the Young Indiana Jones show.

I see what you are saying, but I wonder if we could possibly have both. If the Han Solo standalone does well, who knows... maybe it could spawn another film or even another trilogy? The potential of film is the best place to start I think, as the odds of a TV show falling flat are too great, plus the reach for the audience is not as wide as a theatrical release. How many people here have seen all Star Wars movies yet none or very little of the shows? More than you think, and we're fanatics -- not the general audience.

It'd really be interesting though to see them start with a film or series of films, and then use any (hopeful) success of those to transition into a decently viable TV series.

Well your points regarding Han are right exept for him saving Chewie or his marrige to Leia. These two things come from the EU and unless these are quoted in the films we will really not know if this is the case since everything EU is now non canon. Rey could indeed be Han and Leia's daughter but that doesn't mean they got married. Also, a Han ''solo'' movie might give us a completly new origin on how he met Chewie just like the prequels did with the origins of C3PO and R2D2. Regarding the show I have to ask, is the idea to make it trashed? I ask cause there have been talk of a live action show for some time now and I don't know if that idea was completly scrapped. On my personal point of view I have to say that I have always wondered if a SW series would be well recieved by the fans. SW has always been an action adventure movie and I have seen that some of the reasons that many fans hate the prequels is because of lots of dialogue and lots of focus on certain characters. A one hour long show is not going to be good if the opening credits end and a Rodian protagonist runs like crazy gunning down everyone for 60 minutes. A series would need an awesome plot and nice character development but I wonder if people would dig that since one day they are saying that they want more character development but the next they are saying that the movie sucks cause the characters that are being developed are the ones they don't like. Take Clone Wars for example. I love how that series focused on many different characters and stories but a bunch of fans say they hate CW because if that very same reason. Something I think would be awesome was if they did it like American Horror Story in that every season is a different tale. That would be cool cause it could please all typse of fans and give everyone a chance to see their favorites. That would also give Disney the liberty of playing around the timelines. We could have one season with Tessek and Amanaman smuggling Twi'Lek and Togruta babes to the beach resort planet Babe'Ron 7 while we can have a second season featuring bounty hunters like Embo and Cad Bane. We could also have a season from the Old Republic era and I'm sure fans would dig it. They can even focus a season on the adventures of some favorites like Han, Luke or Leia and this could be done in the past or the present. As long as they don't make a Jar Jar season everything else is cool with me!

Han is my favorite Star Wars Character.

I think there's enough about Han Solo in the SW movies to create a new trilogy of movies on his own.

Really consider a TV show is quite reductive to a geat character such as Han.

We got this question on comics every time, a BD is 60 pages of super high quality drawings and takes a year to produce, but it looks so great, on other hand a comic is 30 pages of industrial repetitive drawings but it can be made in two months. Despite the BD/Movie being the superior art form, the one that gets the most exposition and recognition, it's the Comic/TV Show that is really cheap and fast to produce that reaches more readers.

Edit: (on one side note, i really think movies are a dying breed, like the opera before them, the TV is the medium of the future, not only is faster and cheaper to produce and distribute in this medium but is also the way you get more people to watch your work, and with the new technologies sound and image are getting incredible good in TV too)

Tv and movies have both been around for a long time. I generally don't like TV and would rather watch a movie, so I'm biased for sure, but the movie industry has about 10 billion reasons to disagree with you http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/?view2=domestic&view=releasedate&p=.htm

    Not "better".

To be honest, I would prefer both. As long as they are well done.

The thing is that you can't follow the same formula for a movie trilogy as you do with series. The story boards have to be designed and developed completely differently or they will fail.

A TV show is awesome because you have time for things like character development and planned gradual reveals of important plot points.
While a movie trilogy is awesome because you can cut off the fat and just focus on all big and flashy things.

I personally would like both, as long as they are made properly.

I think Disney is just trying to bank on the SW franchise. I think thats why George regrets giving it up. I think he likes where it going just seeing his interview and especially the red carpet interview is that he doesnt want anything to do with anymore. I like TCW series and Rebels cause its fills voids between episodes. movies of Boba Fett and Han Solo just isnt fitting when you know the outcome of them both. It would support the episodes. I do understand as to why they want to but I figure I would be into it. Now making a backstory before episodes would be a clever idea. Like a movie before TFA, then have Ep. VIII come out then follow it with a movie set between TFA and Ep. VIII. so they can slightly fill in gaps in the stories but not give to much. Like Show Luke trying to create the Jedi academy right before the fall of it and more story of Ben and KOR.

May the force be with you always...

I honestly think a show would be cool. But also am glad they didnt. Because shows sometimes run too long and use stupid things when ideas start running dry. And I LOVED the movie.

There could still be a show that is based on some of the things brought up in this film, even if it isn't called Solo. They could do one about the underworld of the GFFA, smugglers, bounty hunters, etc... that has the Hutts, the Crimson Dawn, and other gangs. It could be set in the time immediately following Solo and could even bring in characters like Qira and Han and even Lando.

I think they will prefer to stay away from doing Solo 2, no matter how much some fans try and get the hashtag to trend and what not. I enjoyed the film immensely but I think Disney just wants to stay away from the thing seeing as how it lost money.

TV shows and movies are very different beasts; one is not inherently better than the other. Both are good, both could work, and a mixture is probably the best.
