Inner me: "They should just have Gollum join the cast and drag this tired series to the lava pool in Mordor's Mt. Doom and drop it like it's hot"

    Real me: "What he hell??"

Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about this. Not that I have anything against the actor (I don't think I've ever actually seen him anything beside LotR). I'm just worried about seeing all these new faces. I'd much rather JJ just focus on all the established characters rather than keep on introducing new ones, especially in the final episode.

They are just happy to be there as cameo.

    Remember Daniel Craig?
    Remember Tom Hardy?
Remember the Princes from the Royal Family?
Remember Admiral Ackbar? Oh wait... :(

Were they announced as "joining the cast" at this point in time, though? I'm actually asking because I wasnt really following the production of TFA or TLJ .

I wouldn’t worry too much. The characters that some of these new actors/actresses are playing are probably equivalent to Billie Lourd’s character in TFA. She was in a few scenes. Her character fit the situation, but her character or her motivations were not concentrated on. Just because they are being added to the cast doesn’t mean they are leading characters.

I stumbled upon this old post- not only did Monaghan want a role, looks like JJ already had a specific role in mind for him to play. What I find interesting about this is that it gives an idea on how J.J. Abrams approaches the final film and that he didn't not only had some very rough ideas of his own as to where the story was going, but that Daisy Ridley was right when she stated that J. J. not only wrote Episode VII, but drafts for VIII & IX as well.

MARCH 30th, 2014 - Dominic Monaghan Says JJ Looking For Unknowns

Dominic Monaghan of LOST and LOTR fame said his friend JJ Abrams is looking for essentially unknown faces for the new SW franchise

    • It was later rumored that Dom himself had scored a cameo as a Jedi, though of course just a rumor

Matt Smith also had an audition which was rumoured to be a Jedi. I definitely think he's using his pre TFA brief and Terrio is using that as a foundation stone.
