I'm not sure I understand your comment, so let me rephrase my point using different words and maybe my original comment will make more sense:
Disney filmmakers/executives (aka the ones making big decisions for the upcoming movie slate,) will see two back-to-back Star Wars films top the box office two years in a row. They will then say: "hmmm, this franchise is making money, let's invest more money into making more Star Wars movies."
It has nothing to do with movie quality, even though both TFA and Ro turned out fine.

And I politely disagree that Titanic was a bad movie. Jurassic World has issues, but Cameron's Titanic was excellent.

I hate to tell you, but money earned is a measure of success. These companies are in the film making business to earn a profit. If they don't, then they will not be around very long.

And while I think there are issues with the last Jurassic film, it was better than all of the other ones (except the first). And Titanic was a damn fine film.

    Based on....
    The popularity of the character?
    The talent of the cast?
The high success rate of the directors?
The best studio in the business today backing it?

If you give a loose definition of fail as "not hitting a billion dollars" then it may very well fail.
If you give it a more realistic expectation of "under 500 million WW" then it probably won't come close to "failing"

With Moana and Doctor Strange still pulling in decent revenue, and there being a weekend projection nearing $60M over a three-day period, it's looking as though Disney could still pull in a $3B year with domestic returns. If that's the case, then I'll be pleasantly surprised.

EDIT: I just did the math using BoxOfficeMojo's numbers and they are only $61M away from reaching that goal. Combine roughly two-thirds of the projected weekend gross with what Rogue One has made on Thursday, and add the Thursday-Friday-Saturday grosses of Moana and Doctor Strange to the mix, and the goal will be passed just in time. Awesome.

This is going to be the best New Year's Day gift: seeing Rogue One cross 400 million in the US. A notable milestone.

Over the past few days the movie has mowed down Captain American, and it only has Finding Dory to defeat, domestically, which it should reach within the next week.

Another day of underestimating from the box-office.....

Estimated - 14.7 million for Monday
Actuals - 15.98 million for Monday

I don't know why people seem to underestimate the film each day....
All I hear about is SING this, SING that....
(yes, SING is huge but geesh!!!?

So are there any estimates for the China box office that aren't just speculation? Everyone (me included) seems to assume it will do better than TFA, i.e. 130+ million based on R1 having Chinese superstars. However, having been in China for the last two weeks I haven't seen the tiniest bit of promotional material, no posters, billboards, tv spots etc. and from what I can gather most Chinese seem to be pretty sick of Hollywood pandering (even though Baze and Chirrut are much more substantial roles than most Chinese in Hollywood movies get).
