Where are you residing in China? That might have something to do with the lack of advertising that you're seeing.

As far as I was able to read, the Chinese response to this movie's ad campaign has been one of cautious optimism, with some concerns surrounding how big or small the roles of Chirrut and Baze would be. If anything, there seemed to be more worries over the possibility that the Chinese characters would do nothing to contribute to the plot (Angelababy's lame-duck role in Independence Day: Resurgence was cited as a specific example) as opposed to the notion that Hollywood was just pandering to them.

Mostly Beijing and Dalian, both of which seem to be dominated by ads for some new iPhone knockoff called Oppo RS9 :p

Yes, my concern is that without more ad campaigns general audiences might think Chirrut and Baze are similarly small roles.

    THURSDAY ESTIMATES
Some Like It Hot - ¥22.2M/288M
    Railroad Tigers - ¥10.9M/564M
    The Great Wall - ¥9.6M/¥1084M
    See You Tomorrow - ¥4.7M/460M
    Rogue One - ¥3.2M Midnights
    Hacksaw Ridge - ¥3.2M/¥382M
    Snezhnaya koroleva 2- ¥0.55M/28.8M

This is not looking to good for the new spin-off film, and points to an 23 million dollar opening weekend.. This would be down fom the 25-30 that Deadline.com estimated.... I think my math is right.
That may not bode well for future STAR WARS releases in CHINA If it uses a similar mathematical equation to figure out its weekend take, which would be in the low-$30 to mid-$20 million range, opening quite a bit lower than TFA.

With all that marketing in CHINA......you would think it would do better

I don't get why the Chinese don't like Star Wars?

Also, it looks like SING has taken over the #1 spot at least for today in American DOM.

    4.7 SING
    4.5 R1

I can only emphasize my previous observation: There is no marketing. Nothing. Hell, Passengers (which opens Jan. 13) is on every other Beijing bus stop and all over the subway but I still haven't seen anything Star Wars related. I even stopped by a theater today and if you're really looking for it you can find showings but again, no posters, nothing. If you ask me, someone in the government is reeeeeaaaaally angry with Disney.

That possible. Also, not necessarily China is or isn't one of them, but many governments do not like movies with themes of "rebellion". That's pretty strong in Rogue One- it's possible that's why some countries aren't supporting it.

What blows me away, though, is that the Chinese talent aren't necessarily bringing more people in. I know that the government threw a hissy fit over their country's professional critics not liking The Great Wall and accusing their reviews of affecting the movie's performance (even though it doesn't seem as though audiences were too enthusiastic about the movie either, and the movie is doing very well regardless of their input), so you would think that they'd at least be more supportive of foreign movies starring their actors (considering that TGW had many Americans involved with its production). I guess not.

And such Chinese talent! Both Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen are both excellent and popular actors. And they rock in Rogue One.

Who knows? Maybe (Chinese) word of mouth will help.

Me neither... They seem to like every crappy CGI ridden action flick (Pacific Rim, Fast and Furious etc.), but not Star Wars (something which is actually quality stuff) for some inexplicable reason...
Pretty much. The most succesful US movies there barely even have any chinese actors.

Estimations for Wednesday were WRONG again!!!

    they said:

    Sing 4.7
    R1 4.6

    Actuals, were ..... drum roll

    R1 4.3
    SING 3.6

Someone wanted SING to pass R1 bad but it didn't happen....

Not sure why some people on some BOX OFFICE prediction boards want R1 to fail... or so it seems

    always underestimating...everyday

@Old Biff from the Future , always wait for Box Office Mojo - they wait longer than other sites to report the income, but they are therefore more accurate.

There are some problems in china. not all theaters send information to Boxoffice mojo, many small theaters do it afterwards. With the late release some already got the bootleg version. And the big contender is The Great Wall. This is chinas try to bring hollywood quality into their own market, many screens are locked for it and a huge portion of the marketing goes into this film. Since Chinas audience is highly unpredictable for Hollywood, I think it is irrelevant for R1 since it gains enough worldwide.
This is a political game right now, since TGW flops in reviews, the chinese market is not really interested in giving R1 a chance, let us see what the moviegoers make out of it.

R1 is now the 9th highest grossing film in U.S. history, sandwiched in between The Phantom Menace and Star Wars. Star Wars films now make up 4 of the top 10 highest grossing movies of all time.

I think The Phantom Menace and Finding Dory are going down for sure:

    Capture.JPG

The rest will be much harder. The Dark Knight is a far possibility, the rest are untouchable. But, this is extreme success.
