Same here... but had DP not been out(and in its 2nd weekend), they weren't about to go see Solo instead. This wasn't a zero-sum game where if DP wasn't there, Solo would get those buys.

It may or may not pass $400M worldwide at the current rate.

While I'm bummed that it's not getting the love financially that the others have gotten, I'm heartened by the fact that fans love it. I can't wait to own it on blu-ray, and I still hold out a (slightly diminished) hope that there will be a sequel or at least Maul ends up in Obi-wan movie.

The projections for this weekend are brutal.

Star Wars fans may like this film, but it doesn't seem like any one else really cares.

The Last Jedi had a second weekend decline of -67.5% (Christmas was on a Monday) which this article mysteriously neglects. Solo's first weekend was inflated by a holiday which makes the 2nd week decline of around the same more likely which was pointed out. Also, $28.2M / $84,420,489 * 100 = 33.40421304595855; 100 - 33.40421304595855 = -66.60% drop with that projection

Second Weekend From 3-day Opening Weekend Change %
-39.8% The Force Awakens (Dec. 25-27)
    -58.7% Rogue One (Dec. 23-25)
-67.5% The Last Jedi (Dec. 22-24)
-66.6% Solo (based on Deadline projection) (Jun. 1-3)

I'm sorry, but why does it matter what day Christmas falls on?

I disagree about the last comment about December. The big difference is that the non fans not showing up now has to do with the competition in theaters currently. If they went to see IW or DP they are less likely to drop $12-$15 a ticket (plus any other cost associated with going to the movies). That is part of the reason Solo is underperforming so bad. If it was in December where there would be no competition, those non fans likely would be more likely to turn out.

That being said, I still think Solo would have underperformed in December compared to the other SW movies but I don’t think it would be doing nearly this bad.

The release date is only a small part of the equation. Memorial day weekend is the traditional release date for Star Wars films, if people haven't forgotten in just two years of Disney takeover! In fact, Disney faced a little bit of backlash when they first announced a December release for TFA, the May long weekend was always seen as Star Wars weekend. It never stopped the films from doing...well, what Star Wars always did. The legendary box office haul of the Star Wars series is an endorsement of Memorial Day release dates. The competition this year doesn't help, but it's really all marketing. If people were looking forward to seeing Solo more than Deadpool then they would have saved their money and skipped Deadpool, and if money didn't matter then they would have just seen both.

And given that the box office was up compared to the same weekend last year, people still had money left over to see things. It's just that they didn't want to see Solo. It all comes down to marketing, really, the marketing's job is convince people to go see the film, and people were not convinced, so they either saw something else or stayed home.

This is a great analysis of Solo opening weekend. In addition to all the factors mentioned in our article, I didn't know about huge sport events both in the U.S. and globally. And, yeah, those tracking numbers - all tracking numbers - are basically BS if what Dan says is true.

    It's long, but it's thorough.

Good video, if you want the short version, their analysis is that it's a lot of small factors: crowded market, TLJ backlash, too much Star Wars being released, weak marketing, lukewarm reviews, weak "must-see" buzz. Also throwing out some other factors like a bunch of sports tournaments happening that weekend, probably the biggest international football tournament of the year, which would have killed the global B.O. And finally B.O. expectations, which are basically just made up anyway.

It's a good point that these "box office analysts" aren't time-travellers and don't have crystal balls, they are good for comparing films based on genre, release date and buzz, and some general market research, but in some ways average viewers are more informed if they also have a knowledge box office history because average viewers are more connected to the world in general, to the fans and what average Joe is thinking about or talking about, compared to the data compiled by market research companies. Personally, I expected Solo to perform around the territory it did, if not slightly higher (~$110mil opening) based on the fact that neither I nor any of my Star Wars friends were particularly excited for it, and so unsurprisingly non-fans hardly knew about it.
