Exactly, for all the movies Marvel has put out, or Pixar or even Disney Studios (Wrinkle In Time for example), the Star Wars IP is the one that Disney has decided to invest heavily in outside of the movies. Yet, they are seeing a pretty drastic drop in merchandising (which we have heard is the true life blood to the Star Wars IP), and Star Wars Land is not yet open, so they can't start counting any increase in attendance to their Parks/Resorts as a testament to Star Wars land.

Is Disney preparing a fire sale over at LFL? I would say no, but, I have to imagine there are some serious conversations and concerns going on as to what is happening.

They are investing a huge amount of money into this IP.

The original $4 billion to buy LFL, at least $800 million to make the movies themselves, whatever the cost was for Rebels, and the two theme parks (Gakaxies Edge) which are rumored to cost $1 billion dollars each! The cost of those theme parks are so high, that it's being talked about that there might be a separate admission fee to Star Wars land, on top of the price of admission to the park it's located in.

Bottom line is that it seems Disney has sunk at least $7 to $8 billion into this IP, so you are absolutely correct in saying the acquisition of Star Wars was not just about the movies, and if there are signs of weakness in customers response to the IP, which there is, well I'm sure some at Disney are nervous.

Edit: Hell, I forgot the marketing costs for the movies themselves, so there's an extra $500 to $800 million added to the $800 million to actually make the movies...

Ok, sure. It's all Rian Johnson's fault. Not the bad press, lazy marketing, production troubles etc. It's Rian Johnson. So?

Lets say they sack Kathleen Kennedy and scratch the plans for Rian Johnson triology. What difference would that make? Do people here think the general audience knows who this two are even if you show picture on them?

China doesn't like SW. The OT didn't do so well in China either. Not a single SW film cracks the top 50 grossing movies in China. Why are the haters so fixed about China when no other SW movies didn't do so well either? IF the OT, PT couldn't do it, what makes you think TLJ could?

The haters are desperately clinging to everything, that might suggest that Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson are about to get fired. That's why.

I mean, a big part of that is because they didn't get the OT until waaaay later than the rest of the world, so there is almost no nostalgia there.

Instead, they got a really bizarre, kinda terrible fanmade comic.

So to them, whatever memories they have of what they'd think of as Star Wars are tainted by stuff like this knight on a motorcycle.

Some fallout stuff over at /Film.
I wonder if the reshoots limited Lucasfilm's ability to market the film earlier and to get out in front with Ehrenreich. Of if they're worried about mixing marketing with TLJ coming out. Either way they need to figure out how they're going to market films better.

Yeah, @DailyPlunge, I remember that I totally wasn't sold on Rogue One, then BAM that teaser hit and I was in for the long haul.

Intense, epic, and I agree that they did a good job selling Jyn. People wanted to know who she was, what she was up to, where she'd come from, and what she might become.

The Solo trailer excited me as a Star Wars fan, but it didn't carry that same mystique. I wonder if that's a product of bad marketing, or just something inherent with trying to make a movie about a character we already know quite a bit about.

Which is why I don't get it. It's not their fault that SW is doing bad over there.

    yes...it is

most of the reasons why the franchise is doing bad over at china is because of disgusting nostalgia bait. Every analysis agrees with this conclusion. Box office data shows that nostalgia is box office poison over there and they do not treat it as such. DROP THE OT ERA, DROP THE OT REFERENCES, AND MAKE ORIGINAL STORIES

Disney is a nostalgia based company that runs nostalgia based theme parks. That is Disney and where there success comes from. They go around buying other companies (Marvel, Lucasfilm, possibly FOX) to mine them for nostalgia.

So what's the excuse for the OT and PT doing bad over there? PT is completely different than OT. Also why does China like Transformers Age of Extension but many Americans dislike it despite having good box office? You argument is very weak. Then again, you guys (as in haters) don't have much outside of RT And click bait YouTube videos to back the hate. What makes you think KOTOR will do well over there that some people suggest? Also opinion articles isn't fact.

Potentially it could make a great deal of difference. Someone with a different vision could have a completely different outcome, people with this level of talent are not interchangeable cogs in the machine.

But they don't fire people over what fans think- it all comes down to money. If Kennedy and Johnson don't produce, then they certainly will be replaced. What Disney's tolerance level is for that is not something any of us know, nor do we know the nuances of their contracts. But rest assured, almost anyone can be replaced if the company thinks it will improve the bottom line sufficiently. And it won't have anything to do with the fans, except insofar as the fans do or don't buy what Disney is selling.

Richard Rushfield in The Ankler report has revealed a rumor that Kennedy may be out by September. "The talk out there is of a September changing of the guards. We'll see."

That rumor suggests that Kennedy is ready to step down because she's tired of all the travel.

    "I told you so..."

    Good grief.

If the rumor is true it sounds like Kennedy is lining up Kiri Hart to replace her when she steps down.

That's a rather convenient and simplistic way to look at it. If that were the case, than no leader of any corporation would ever get fired. The truth is that we the general public couldn't tell you who the CEO's/company presidents are of many of the companies we buy products from. They still get fired.

Back in 2014 Iger fired Rick Ross who was the head of Disney Studios, not entirely based on the movies that were put out, but in part because there were obvious signs that Ross just couldn't handle the day to day management of Disney Studios, he just couldn't do the job. No one knew who Rick Ross was, no one really cared, but, a change needed to happen, and Disney and Bob Iger made that change.

I am not saying that Kennedy is going to get fired, even though the rumor has caught my eye but I haven't had a chance to read it so won't comment just yet...

But my point is that if Disney/Iger loses confidence in someone he will get rid of them, he's done it numerous times.
