BOM shows SOLO at $371M worldwide with a $270M prod budget so it is not so far off now

But it hasn't hit there yet and it's not going to be in theaters much longer.
And remember the marketing adds to that 270. 270 is just production not production + marketing.

Not sure I understand your comment. It is at $371M now. We agree to disagree.

It still has to make ~130 million more.
General theory is movies have to make 2x budget + marketing to make it into the black.

    Solo cost 270 to make.
That alone puts it closer to the 540 mark to really turn a profit.

    It isn't really close.

And you can't really agree to disagree on this one based on your argument.

If you pay 20 dollars for supplies and only sell your product for 15, you lost 5 dollars.
If you paid 15 dollars and sold your product for 20 dollars, you made 5 dollars.

This is why one is called a flop and one isn't.

I disagree with you. My initial point is that AMaTW is projecting $80M this weekend and instead of it being called a flop, it is being hailed as a great addition to the Marvel machine. That is all. I'm out.

Ant-Man 2 had a far smaller production budget than Solo. It's seeing about a 44% increase in the first weekend from the first Ant-Man as well just domestically according to Deadline's numbers yesterday. Worldwide Ant-Man 2 is going to smoke Solo.

Solo is reportedly not profitable for the studio given its budget. Ant-Man 2 will be.

Other Lucasfilm projects are being re-evaluated.

Even the new Lucasfilm Indiana Jones movie is reportedly getting another delay and pass/do-over of the script with a different writer which may be related.

Solo is what's known as a 'flop' or 'bomb' - a movie that loses money. It doesn't have to do with the quality of the movie, just whether it's a money loser or not.

    Because it cost less.
This isn't disagreeable. It's a fact that Ant-Man and the Wasp cost less than Solo to make. So it's bar for making it's money back is much lower and therefore not a flop.

If you pay 20 dollars for supplies and only sell your product for 15, you lost 5 dollars.
If you paid 15 dollars and sold your product for 20 dollars, you made 5 dollars.

I like ya brother but you are denying basic math here.

It is really a weard thing to reading through "fan posts" and I getting the feeling that people get a satisfation of being "right" about a Star Wars film that did not hit the end goals.
But yeah. Let's celebrate. Super. SW franchise is dying slowly. Yeah. you. are so. right. @MagnarTheGreat . You. must . be. SOOO HAPPY NOW. Congrats.
    I am not that happy.

I went to see Ant-Man today and I had a general conversation with an older couple. We mentioned that we liked Solo and they were surprised. The woman said... we heard it was terrible. It got terrible reviews. Not 30 seconds later she was raving about the newest Jurassic World film. This is kind of interesting. It's something Disney is going to have to think about going forward. Star Wars is such a big property that reporting news about it online is big business. Solo's reviews are better than Jurassic World, but this woman only heard about the reviews for Solo.

Had Lucasfilm avoided the production issues on Solo they film would have made a modest profit. Disney needs to tighten up the leaks coming out of Lucasfilm. Right before Solo comes out there's stories about a Fett film. A few weeks after Solo comes out there's the story about the stand alone films being held back. It seems that some of those decisions were made months before they were news, but Disney is losing the narrative.

No selling points, overseas has abandoned the brand, no OT big 3, horrible box office of solo, unpopular characters. Jumanji 3

Episode 9 will be lucky to pass phantom menace

    It'll be okay
    Star Wars isn't dying.
SOLO was a perfect storm of bad news bears hitting all at once. The fact that Solo even made it to theaters is a sign of the power of Star Wars.

They learned some valuable lessons and will readjust and come back with a better plan in the future.

So you are saying if you make a movie for a budget of around $200 million and it brings in over $1.3 billions it is a huge success?

Or can it be other factors than budget to play in if it is a bomb/flop?

Yes it is a huge success by any metric. Trying to twist or manipulate the words to fit a bizarre fetish of hating TLJ doesn't make it accurate. TLJ was a huge success. 11th highest grossing film of all time as a middle entry in a saga. Star Wars middle films have all dropped about 30% from the first one. (AOTC actually has the lowest drop). Anytime your movie crosses 1 billion dollars, it's a huge success. Any expectations above that is automatically setting a film up for failure. (See BvS)

And overseas has never had the love affair with Star Wars that places like North America has.

Ant-Man and the Wasp opens at 76 million
    Ant-Man opened at 57 million.

a 19 million dollar jump in opening weekends.

Horrible excuse...last jedi made 685 million without China and force awakens 1 billion overseas.

    Solo is completely non-existent

And episode 9 will be lucky to outgross rogue one

Ignorance is no excuse my friend.

    overseas.png

TLJ had a very comparable overseas % with all the other movies.
TFA is an anomaly. It is not the standard.
