Solo is definitely underperforming but it appears the whole movie industry is underperforming this weekend. Deadpool 2 dropped like a rock this past Friday dropping 77%. Infinity War’s legs also seem to be running out as well as it only brought in 4.2 million on Friday. It appears to me that people are doing other things this weekend besides going to the movies.

Can we keep this on topic? As for Solo I'll just keep repeating what we know so far to dispel this wishful thinking narrative:
It appears so far that Star Wars fans like Solo. The opening weekend is missing projections because the reviews are mixed. Solo has had a troubled narrative since last Summer. The only way to overcome this narrative is for the movie to be good and for the reviews to be overwhelmingly positive. The general audience liked The Last Jedi, but some of that audience is not bothering to go to Solo the opening weekend. To convince those people to go it will take strong word of mouth.

Also, it's worth noting... based on the audience scores for Solo the general audience doesn't appear to like Solo as much as Star Wars fans.
Deadline mentioned that Memorial Day isn't the box office boom it used to be... Disney's biggest film for this period was The Avengers and there's a reason why they released it in late April.

We will never know but I suspect that Solo would have performed better if Disney would have stuck to the December release dates like the other SW movies.

I guess it depends on what kind of legs Solo has over the next few weeks. Disney really wanted December for Mary Poppins. This is the first Disney Solo film to have mixed reviews so it probably would have depressed the opening weekend any time it was released.

I agree that Solo would likely be less in December then it’s predecessors but I think it would be doing better then it is now.

I guess in the end we will never know if keeping Poppins in December was a wise move. I’m not sure the difference in box office receipts of a December Poppins movie compared to a release another time would be all that different and it appears to me that not having Solo in December might have a bigger difference in box office numbers then if Poppins was moved.

People who have seen Solo seem to love it. It's certainly less divisive than TLJ. However, it's in bomb territory for the opening. If the word of mouth doesn't save it's pretty much a disaster for Lucasfilm.

    fri: $59,684,491 (minus thursday)
    sat: $63,993,205
    sun: $51,331,888

    Solo
    thu: $14,100,000 (estimate) (RO -51.38%)
fri: $21,531,000 (estimate minus thursday) (RO -48.85%)
    sat: $24,678,000 (estimate) (RO -46.71%)
    sun: $23,016,000 (estimate) (RO -38.92%)

    Preview/Weekend Multipliers
    S:ASWS: $14.1M ($83M weekend estimate) 5.89x
    RO:ASWS: $29M ($155M weekend) 5.34x
    SW:TLJ: $45M ($220M weekend) 4.89x
    SW:TFA: $57M ($248M weekend) 4.35x

They're expecting a softer Sunday drop because of the holiday Monday (people off from school/work so later Sunday showings are better). Solo has performed like a Star Wars movie in December based on the preview multipliers, and not a Marvel movie or other type of movie with huge multipliers way bigger than a 6x (SW movies are very dependent upon presales compared to everything else is the way it's worked so far). In order to have hit the industry (150M-170M+ 4-day) and Disney tracking ($130-$150M 4-day) it really needed to perform like a non-SW movie in May and that didn't happen.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. She was responsible for Jurassic Park, Back to the Future trilogy ect. You know, movies that people universally enjoy.

So please explain how it's her fault that OT and PT didn't do well in China? If you look at the top 50 all time grossing movies in China, not a single Star Wars movie cracks the list. But movies like Transformers: Age of Extinction, Transformers: The Last Knight, Avengers: Age of Ultron makes the list, you know movies that Americans didn't enjoy. So does that mean OT is bad? Or just maybe, just maybe China just don't like SW?

Let this sink in...115 million dollar opening weekend on a December pretty much assures this movie will make it to 400 million domestically

I was coming here to comment on the topic and then I saw someone referring to Kathleen Kennedy as "Spielberg's pathetic secretary"

Wow. Just wow. You don't know a thing about film history if you seriously believe that. And I say that as respectfully as I can.

I agree. I don't think Kathleen Kennedy should be running Lucasfilm but if you dislike her, you should dislike her for the right reasons.

In addition, they're really going to have to push presales hard on Episode IX and get the audience involved and get the audience back, because IX will have a problem opening higher than TLJ at $220M if presales are down from TLJ level.

I'm not sure what this has to do with Solo. Solo had production problems, mixed reviews, and was released against strong competition. The general audience who didn't show up this weekend for Solo has already showed up twice for sequel trilogy and enjoyed both films.

The lesson here is if Lucasfilm is going to recast an iconic character like Han Solo they better make sure they hire the right director to start the project and make a film that general audiences will enjoy. Fortunately for Lucasfilm, Obi-Wan is the most popular character they have and they don't have recast. They better make sure they've got a good story to tell.
