Hello, Cantina Patrons. As you all know, SWTFA has more tickets pre-ordered for it than any previous record holder, amassing over $54 million in sales a month before the film's release. Obviously, that number has probably spiked up since then with the logical progression of time (since a month has passed since then), but that statistic gives us a clear vision of the future. That vision is that this movie is going to make a shitload of money, and I figured that I might as well try and keep track of how much money that's going to be.

To this end, I will be using information from BoxOfficeMojo to provide daily updates on the film's financial performance both in the United States Of America and abroad. BOM should provide good statistics on domestic performance per day, but the way that they update international grosses don't provide the same kinds of updates (that is to say, you can see the cumulative performance in a specific region, but not a week-by-week recap).

Middle of Germany. Almost all midnight screenings(16th-17th) are sold out in my city. Only for the OV in English are still some seats available. There are 12 screens in two cinemas for a midnight screening, which is HUGE in my city. I will try to feed you with information if available and as soon as possible. Disney announced that in the Netherlands there is a pre-sale record with 115.000 tickets sold in the pre-sale. That is huge for the Netherlands!

I just read some final pre sale records for Germany. The 4 largest movie theatre chains here announced that TFA almost tripled each of their respective pre sale records. That should be something way over a million tickets.

Yes Euro, they said "milliarden" on TV which translates to billion in the US. There was a very critical newspaper article in regards to the merchandise machine in the "Spiegel", a bit too critical for me, because that is already known since George Lucas invented it, so to speak.

You gotta think about, the little boy from my girlfriend is hyped up to the max, not just because of me, because of the toys and books and games etc, he never saw any star wars beforehand. The toys and games build up a base of knowledge by those little ones, then the movie hits. If it hits some of the OT notes you can expect the merchandising to skyrocket. I'm not even start talking about the 10 to 14 year olds.
I like it cause it will mean we get quality movies, like Harrison ford said;" this is not a crab shoot, you know." What i don't like is when the mouse is suing fans for posting pics of their bought toys and becoming all ruthless like the empire itself.
btw post it with your face, that should work out in the future, once Rogue One arrives. Remember that.;)

I recently came across something to the effect of "by the time Disney's first four Star Wars movies have been released, they will have made $25 billion on merchandise".

Yes. It's usually lumped in with the "day one" ticket sales.

    This is kinda interesting: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-12-16/force-awakens-can-t-hope-to-match-box-office-of-original-star-wars

They're looking at inflation, which puts TFA's box office revenue after ANH.

That time frame is worth noting. How long will TFA be in theaters?

And merchandise: "If those projections prove accurate, only 1 in 4 dollars collected from The Force Awakens will come from the box office."

At least four and a half months. I remember hearing something about a late April date. If the movie does well enough, they'll probably delay the home video release by a few weeks.

The ticket sales for the original film have to do with the box office working radically differently then than it does now. For one thing, film piracy was a lot easier to handle back then. A New Hope first had a limited release that was expanded into a large release, which lasted a long while. Then there were reissues of the film in the years that followed. The popularity of VHS ultimately made this redundant, which is why they don't have reissues now. And then there was that Special Edition... All in all, there's a lot to consider even when you don't keep inflation in mind.
