It will never happen. Unless Cameron gives us some new technology, like 3D was when first Avatar was released, it won't come even close. It has no cultural significance anywhere, let alone around the world, compared to SW. It was one-time movie event, it was something new and everyone wanted to be in on it. But, it has been seven years since and even more will pass until Avatar 2 is released. Unless it makes 500 million in China, I don't it will even catch the Avengers. But, I don't doubt it will make a lot of money times three for three sequels.

As of right now, SW needs a bit over 5 mil. to reach 2 billion worldwide. :)

    Avatar 2 was delayed.

And the thing is, Avatar inexplicably hasn't garnered a huge fanbase clamoring for a sequel in spite of it being the single highest-grossing movie of all time. The only people I really hear are looking forward to it with great relish are people who are fans of James Cameron in general - and by themselves, that's not nearly as broad a demographic as Star Wars.

if you've never read it, you might find this forbes article fascinating: www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2014/12/18/avatar-became-the-highest-grossing-film-of-all-time-while-leaving-no-pop-culture-footprint/

it speaks to the gap between profit and popularity regarding Avatar.

i know i personally have no interest in an Avatar sequel. i didn't like the first one at all.

The movie has made $2 billion by now - we'll know tomorrow for sure once today's totals are gathered up.

Avatar still holds that record by about 5 days (7 days if you're counting TFA being released slightly earlier internationally than domestically).

I was just comparing TFA and Avatar's daily Box-office.
Avatar's US domestic was only around $630 Million... then I scrolled down and noticed that Avatar's theatrical run continued right up to the release of the Extended edition in August 2010, which itself ran to November.
So all in all, Avatar had an 11.5 month theatrical run.
I imagine with the Blu-Ray release coming in April, TFA's run is going to end rather soon.

So it looks to me like Avatar's all time record is out of sight. But TFA could just about get over the line for the following:
    • No.3 on the all time overseas box office behind Avatar and Titanic - it needs approx another $68m from the overseas box office to do do this and overhaul Furious 7. On current trends it may struggle to get this.
    • No. 2 on the all time worldwide list above Titanic - just needs approx $180m from the worldwide take. To me it looks like it may just fall short.
    • $1 Billion domestic. Would be nice to put down a marker in the industry and claim what will be quite a prestigious record. Again, it looks to me like TFA may just fall short.
What does everyone think? Am I being pessimistic?

Without a re-release of some sort, I'd say all of those are out of reach at this point. I was hoping TFA would flaten out its dropoffs a bit and chug along for another month or two on fan repeats alone. But it doesn't have those Avatar legs. It hasn't got an addicted to the film audience segment like Pandora did to keep driving people to the theaters all winter.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I think where TFA is now is where it ends.

Yup, only 1 and 2 are higher and I don't think Hail, Caesar! will keep that amount up.
