Saturday's total is still very much up in the air. Thursday and Friday were heavy with pre-sales. Pre-sales for Saturday and Sunday were far lower. So, its difficult to get a read until the Saturday updates start coming in. From there we should have a better idea of if it hits the 208 mark (very likely) and by how much it surpasses it. A total over 250 is still possible at this point if there are good walk up numbers today.

It has no chance to beat Titanic and Avatar now.

However, those films were crazy anyhow. as great Grandma's and Grandpa's in the 70 and 80's went to see Titanic. Even my grandparents did at the time and they hadn't seen a film since the 1950's then.

    Avatar went crazy overseas...

It will be #1 all-time for a SW film and blast past Avengers.

    "Not bad, not bad"

Why do you say that? December releases have historically as high as a 3.5x multiplier due to the holiday breaks.

It's gonna be a long shot. But I think it still has a pretty good chance. Especially of passing titanic. Avatar's numbers are so out there that will be tougher.

The best chance is next week when kids are out of school.
    That is the best shot.

TFA made more in its first 24 hours than Avatar made in its entire opening weekend.

The jury is out still I agree. But TFA opened higher than anyone's expectations. Nothing that has occurred so far has lessened its chances of a top spot in my opinion.

December is a strange time for movies. The drop off on weekdays and next weekend will be lower than a summer release.

Also word of mouth. Avatar was still bringing in big numbers well into January as word spread of how cool Pandora looked in 3D and how you had to see it on a big screen..

Keep in mind that Disney's expectations are most likely staying deliberately low. Bob Iger has been trying to keep expectations on this film's profit relatively low so that it looks especially good on his company when it greatly exceeds those expectations. I would say it will very clearly make more than $215 million.
Bear in mind - Star Wars has a significant advantage over Avatar in that those formats have massively expanded after Avatar's success. Last I checked, there are at least three times as many IMAX theaters now as there were when Avatar was released.

I ask myself that same question all the time. It's basically a rip-off of Dances with Wolves. And DWW was a much better story/film.

I saw and loved Dances With Wolves on its initial release. Lost count of how many times at the theatre (where I later worked). Loved John Barry's sweeping epic score.

I saw Avatar in the theatre 4 times (even more times after I bought the DVD) and not once have I even remembered Dances With Wolves while watching Avatar!
DWW is totally forgotten while I'm on Pandora.
They are two very different films to me, and I love them each equally.

    Celebrate the differences! :)

(Or put another way: I have two eyes under eyebrows, a nose, a mouth, a chin and jaw. So do you! Are you going to charge me with "facial plagiarism"? Can you accept that we each have common features, but see past them to what makes us each a unique individual? Then do that with movies?).

    Back to TFA's Financial:

I'd forgotten about the possibility Iger would lowball the estimates, and why. Makes sense.

Estimates I've read have TFA passing JW's $208M sometime today (Saturday). And I'm going to go along with the quote - from earlier in this thread: "$265M+ gross for the weekend."

This is a thread @Pomogema started for The Force Awakens' financial performance.
It is isn't a review or "comparative dissing" thread for it, or any other film.

Our theater, which is new, was soft on the Saturday after opening of Jurassic world. They add shows to the point it was showing every half hour. They were getting killed. People were lined up for four shows this morning starting at 9:00. Can't wait to take my 7 year old in a couple of weeks when it settles down.

With the holidays, I could see some people holding off because they can go next week when the kids are out.

This isn't the place to argue about the merits of both films, or the fact that one is a rip off of the other, but that's what it is. Take Dances with Wolves, and move it to another planet.
