Keep in mind - this is winter holidays. That record is really powerful.
I don't think what 8-9 or anthology's or Avatar 2 will beat it.

Where I am, school isn't even out yet. There were a lot of bleary-eyed kids in class last Friday. And many of their teachers, too. ;)

It's already made back it's budget...
Have Disney made back their investment with the merchandise yet?

Avatar was winter holidays as well...
It would be nice, but I'm still not convinced the Force will overthrow the blue aliens.... it might rise above the sinking ship though.

I'm fairly certain that 8-9 will beat down Avatar 2. I just don't see how Avatar 2 will have the same pull as the original film.

I knew it would reach near 400$ million but never thought 500$ million. Gawd in three days and one extra night. Avatar never did 517million its first weekend!

The real test will be to see what kind of crowds it's drawing in 3 months from now...
Because I saw Avatar pretty late into it's theatrical run (April, I think), and there were still decent numbers.

I think it's going to have a huge Christmas weekend because lots of people I talked to were waiting until the holidays, so it should be really strong through mid-January, but I don't see it having the staying power that Avatar did. Mostly because Avatar was so popular by word of mouth and had uninterested people going to check it out a month or two after it opened. Don't see people who aren't big Star Wars fans going to see TFA in February. They'll either decide to see it within the first month or wait until they can rent it.

Based on initial estimates, it only needs to make $422 million more domestically to make me happy. Sink that boat! I'd love to see it take Avatar but I think that's unlikely.

By tomorrow morning, it will likely be in the top 100 domestic grosses of all time. THAT is impressive.

Nah, the record is only for opening weekend for the first weekend. China would be exempt from that.

Still, don't understate that the movie made only $8 million less on its opening weekend without the aid of China. That in and of itself is no small feat.
    I stand corrected.

The updated figure has it stand at $3 million above the record set by Jurassic World. So it cleared the record without China's help.

We all knew that the first weekend would be huge with the size of the marketing campaign and the presale numbers. We will now see how strong the second week decrease will be. Do people remain coming due to the holidays and the good word of mouth, or will the movie take a serious hit?

In order to avoid the crowd during the weekend, I have decided to watch TFA for the first time this morning (Monday morning). When I drove to the theater, I was surprised by the parking lot being almost full. When I got inside, the theater was packed! I am starting to think that TFA has a chance to surpass Avatar in the U.S. box office.

What is your estimate for China for opening weekend?

My current understanding is that Star Wars hasn't had that much of an impact there, particularly the OT, because in 1977 it didn't show there - something about then-official state-sponsored repression of Western culture that I read about. It looks like the prequels did not do a lot of business in China either.
