which pretty much did nothing. It did 33 million worldwide over 12 weeks.

    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avatarspecialedition.htm

I will be satisfied when TFA finishes what ANH started, and crushes Avatar domestically.

I'm still amazed at how well Avatar did world wide - it did 70+% of its gross internationally. TFA doesn't look like it will do those percentages, even with China. It's very North America tilted so far.

Don't get me wrong, I hope TFA crushes world wide, but $3 billion is real daunting, particularly if they release the DVD-Blu-ray in April. By comparison, Avatar was in theaters for something like 34 weeks. if the Blu-ray is released on April 3, TFA will only have been in theaters for 14-15 weeks at that point.

Even with that in mind, the movie is still expected to reach the $700 million mark by this time next week. Keep in mind that people are still on break right now, and we have another holiday coming up. Unless sales plummet to less than a million dollars per day at most - which is really unlikely at this point, given the way that it's shattering records - I don't see a $749 million gross as being the stopping point on this gravy train.
It's not even "pretty much nothing" - the re-release was an outright flop from Fox's perspective, opening at the #11 spot on its first weekend. They were confident that it would make a few hundred million, but it barely left a dent. If it weren't attached to a movie that made $2.8 billion on its initial run, it would have been seen as a loss for the company.
It's North America-tilted, sure, but you have to keep in mind that it took 17 days for the movie to make $1.02 billion worldwide - $352 million of that from America, and $668 million of that overseas. The Force Awakens made $1.091 billion worldwide in 10 days (not counting the slightly early releases in a few countries) - $545 million here and $546 million elsewhere. Come back in a week and we'll have a better estimate of how it's doing on a weekly basis compared to Avatar.

All I know is that I will probably be a contributing factor to the numbers. I can't get enough. My finances are going to give me a stern talking when all is said and done.

Since we are discussing how well Star Wars might perform in China, here is how western movies performed this year in China:

    1. Furious 7: $390M
    4. Avengers - Age of Ultron: $240M
    5. Jurassic World: $228M
    11. Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation: $136M
    12. Hobbit - Battle of Five Armies: $121M
    14. Terminator - Genisys: $112M
    17. Ant-Man: $105M
    18. San Andreas: $103M
    19. The Martian: $94M

The other movies in the Top 20 seem to be Chinese movies.

It must be very difficult to forecast how many people will go back to watch it again. We did yesterday in 2D and it was still sold out, or very close to it. At 2 pm on a Monday afternoon!

I bet there are some average figures, e.g. on average 5 % of viewers see it twice, etc...?

I sometimes feel a bit silly that I am enjoying so much hearing the movie's success. My only role is to be one of the people contributing to the box office sales. I guess this is how soccer fans feel about their teams...? :)

Crikey. The slope on that line ought to be making the folks at Disney very happy. It's basically been very close to sold out since day one. That's why you can't see the weekend upticks, there's no room for it because there's hardly any drop-off during the week.

Based on this graph, I'm confident TFA will far outstrip Avatar. It won't even be close.

Don't feel silly! After all, I'm rooting for it out of sheer avarice. ;)

DIS is among the 30 Dow Jones Industrials and S & P 500, and therefore a top holding in most mutual funds. Most adults in America (and many elsewhere) literally have a vested interest in how this movie performs, even if they don't realize it. The stock has outperformed both of those indices, maybe not all due to TFA, but it surely helps.

Plus, I want more movies and a really nice Star Wars Land at WDW, where I can spend all the money I made through Disney stock.
