I can only speak for myself, but I really didn't like TFA and I still watched it 2 times in the theatre to see if it grew on me or not. With TLJ, I feel no need to watch it a second time in the theatre. I think that's what will gradually happen to people who don't like these movies - at first they are willing to forgive and come back for more, to see if there's hope after all... But eventually they will stop care.

But hey, at least the anthologies are amazing (so far).

Early morning industry estimates at $21.8 million for Monday, which is the best 10th Monday and the 4th best December Monday, behind records held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One.

    http://deadline.com/2017/12/star-wars-the-last-jedi-monday-box-office-1202229621/

Take note that this is due to the fact that many schools are yet to start their holidays, and business will improve as more children start their holiday seasons. The record held by Rogue One took place on the 26th December, which is a week after it opened and is the perfect example of where The Last Jedi's box office will improve with more schools start the breaks.

With solid competitions opening up with Jumanji : Welcome to the Jungle, The Greatest Showman and a few others, it will a tight race. May the best movie win and may the Force be with us.

It crossed $500M globally today. Again, the presence of a lot of competition will probably bite into the movie's numbers a little (I'm not expecting it to hold over as well as TFA), but it will easily come out on top.

It's doing quite well. Maybe not as well as The Force Awakens, but well nonetheless. I looked up the yearly box office, and it's already number 8, less than a week after release. It won't beat out the amazing run of The Force Awakens, but yeah, it's gonna do well. If it's not the number one film of the year I'd be shocked.

I doubt it will gross more than rogue one though. Too many people are disappointed by that movie.

It will definitely cross Rogue One in my opinion, but the question is how far it will reach. I am putting my lowest estimations at $1.3 billion while my highest at $1.7 billion. It can achieved the latter depending on how well it performs in China.

The Last Jedi will not beat The Force Awakens numbers, but Episode IX will.

I put my estimates slightly higher (sticking to my initial gut feelings of $1.5 billion - $1.8 billion), but I agree that it will certainly cross Rogue One.

And that’s an interesting prediction to make about IX. Personally, I think it depends on how they decide to market the film: is it really the end of the Skywalker Saga? Will they market it as such? It will certainly be different to ROTJ and ROTS, which, at the time of release, were thought to possibly be the end of the Saga, and I think by IX a lot of the audience will have a better impression of VIII (I really just think it takes more than one viewing to appreciate this film, flaws and all).

I think it will certainly have the best chance to pass VII of any Star Wars film to that date, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it came short. Just have to wait and see, I guess! :p

I disagree. I think E9 has a good chance of beating E8's numbers, but neither will top E7.

Agreed with all of your points and opinions. :) However, I still stand clear that I believe Episode IX will at least have a possibility and chance to beat Episode 7's numbers at least by a small margin. I really believe Disney will be more aggressive with IX's marketing by 2019 to further differentiate the movie from other big budget films such as Avengers 4, The Lion King, Aladdin, Toy Story 4, Mulan, Dumbo & Frozen 2 of that year which are all under their umbrella. Well, of course, clouded the future is, and there is the possibility of it not reaching 7's numbers but I shall remain hopeful.

Trust me, they are going out with a bang with IX. ;)

I saw it once at the theater and do not see any reason to go back. It was good, but not worth the $5 to see it again. Apparently that feeling is not exclusive. Just read an article about how it took in 1/2 of what TFA on Monday. I think much of the big $$s comes from the fans that post on boards like this one. The audiences did not like TLJ according to most of what I read on the Internet, but the critics liked it. That means Disney is paying off some critics.

Following this flawed logic, increase in organic food consumption also leads to an increase in number of autism cases.

Maybe, just maybe, critics (and many fans for that matter) don't share your taste in movies?

repeat viewership is the only way these movies make so much. There are less repeat viewers, TLJ will not make as much as TFA.

Saying Disney is buying off critics is an idiotic statement on so many levels. TLJ was never expected to bring in the same amount as TFA even before the movie came out. It is obvious that there was a subset of people who disliked the movie. There also is a group who loved it and some who thought it was ok. It seems to me though if you look at all the metrics, the dislike for the movie is overstated on boards like these

"That’s a great Monday figure, and if it looks like Last Jedi is lagging behind, it’s only because there were fewer kids off from school yesterday”

This is crazy, thought I would share.

WOM may be killing The Last Jedi globally compared to TFA

    https://twitter.com/GiteshPandya?re.../topic/23002-star-wars-the-last-jedi/?page=14

    TLJ -220 million cume DOM
    TLJ -230 million cume OS

    comparison

    TFA -288 million cume DOM
    TFA- 328 million cume OS

    Same amount of time

To make matters worse in the states, that damn Jumanji may take the weekend. Don't underestimate that film. Jumanji will make bank, kids are going to flock to it.
