Around 30 years ago I was staying at my nan's with my younger brother during the summer holidays. One particular monday having exhausted all the toys and games we'd taken along my nan asked if we'd like to watch a film and gave us a choice of two - Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan or Empire Strikes Back. After some consideration we plumped for ESB and I remember the sheer joy and awe at seeing the AT-AT's walking across Hoth towards the rebel base for the first time. We watched that film three times a day for the rest of the week, no doubt driving my nan nuts.

Today, my nan passed away. I never thanked her for giving me that day, a day that truly ignited my love and enthusiasm for the Star Wars trilogy. One that, no matter how many times I force myself to watch The Phantom Menace, I will always remember as the day that my nan gave me the gift of Star Wars. Thanks Nan...

(I know it's a more personal note than usually appears on this board, but I just wanted to share a little something with a community of like-minded folk at this time.)

    A great story.

I've been dealing with loss and grief too. My father, who was my best friend, went with me to the opening day of every SW film from 1977 on.
He died unexpectedly not too long ago. TFA will be the first opening day without him.

Although I was with him when he died, there was still so much that I did not have time to say to him.

I understand how you feel, and I am sorry for your loss.

There is a beautiful place near the state capitol called Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In the center of the cemetery park is a polished stone wall
that bears the name of every Veteran interred there. It can take some time after a funeral before the person's name is engraved on the wall.

Yesterday I received a call from the USMC Liaison Office informing me that the engraving of my Father's name has been completed. I went
and saw it for the first time today. There is a sense of pride, but then there is also such a sense of emptiness and loss. The finality of
seeing his name engraved in stone is something I was not prepared for.

Life doesn't make instruction manuals for understanding and coping with such things, but I wish it did.

I am proud beyond words. Growing up, Dad was a larger than life character to me, like something out of a movie. He made growing up an adventure.

He was my best friend, my mentor, my hero.
