Tarkin was awesome! I still can't believe they didn't market how much of a presence Vader had in the story, and the peculiar friendship the two fostered.

Yes, I agree! They missed a truly great opportunity in advertising. I really enjoyed the portrayal of Vader in Tarkin, as he just seemed slightly less in control than ANH and perhaps still all the more devastated about the events of ROTS.

@jagdhundnull I have pretty much read most of SW adult novels, so if you're interested I could recommend a few good reads. Just PM me a few things you're looking for in the novels??

I've never really ventured into Star Wars fiction, but I figured I would jump in with this title. It seemed like a good starting point since the world building is essentially starting fresh.

Hopefully I enjoy this because I really would like to read more StarWars stories.

@Vagabondarts I advise against it, for the fear of ruining your appetite for the EU. My personal feelings on this novel aside, I suggest you start with a more established title.

I bought it and I'm really not enjoying myself. Constantly feeling like I am wrestling with this author to get anything out of this on every single page.

    Super disappointed.

I can't believe this was actually the launchpad for the new canon. I'm blown away.

I'm halfway through the book and absolutely nothing has happened. The story is more about this annoying Skelly character than it is Kanaan or Hera.

Is the "Kenobi" book by this author any better? I see a lot of people enjoy that one

@Vagabondarts I just stopped half way, it was torture. Kenobi was marginally better, but that's not saying a lot. It was a missed opportunity as well.
You don't get Kenobi, the defeated war general and Anikin's friend struggling with his inner demons. All of the Ep. III aftermath is blatantly dodged
in favor of some retarded "local trouble" that's irrelevant as far as the rest of EU is concerned.

How is this guy paid to write these novels? Is that wrong to ask?

@Vagabondarts I have no clue. Maybe they saw potential in him and thought they'd take him under their wing. His writing doesn't offer anything on any literally level. Feels like reading pages of average fan writing. But not to worry, there are dozens of SW books to restore your faith and enjoy even afterh Ep. VII comes out. I never got the fan outcry about the EU becoming "Legends".

These stories can still exist in our hearts, they just take place far from the film universe. Kind of like the MARVEL comics alternate universes.

I'll never buy another novel by this guy again. I tried a sample of a Luceno book and I didn't like his writing style either.

I appreciate your recommendations here and in the Zahn thread. I'll definitely be looking into those.

@Vagabondarts J. Luceno is positively one of the top writers in EU. He does space combat and Han, Luke, Leia like nobody's busyness. What was the sample you read from, I'm curious?

Tarkin. Compared to A New Dawn it was invigorating... But maybe it was just a weak sample.

Is the author writing the upcoming Luke Skywalker book any good?

Updating because things start getting good in Chapter 22.
I really like Kanan and Hera.

@Vagabondarts I still can't believe this book is being read. LoL I'll stop bitching and let you enjoy your reading. There's just so much more a SW book needs to have for me to enjoy it.

At least someone out there is getting their money's worth, and that's a good thing!

I've spent some good money on it, and every time Kanan and Hera share a scene they are pretty awesome. It's unbelievable that it took almost halfway into the book for anything interesting to happen.

I've got some better more highly recommended Star Wars books waiting in the wings thanks to this forum, Twitter and goodreads. If I reach the limit of my patience with this one, I'll switch it to one of those.

I got A New Dawn as an audiobook (doing the same for Tarkin now). I could see how all the criticisms are valid, and I probably would've had the same problems with the hard copy. But the audiobook had enough flair and personality to keep me going on it.

DUDE, it was announced at the Comic Con Experience that A New Dawn will be released here in Brazil in April 2015. That was a great news. And it will be released 17 books between 2015 and 2016, including the Thrawn Trilogy and Kenobi.

None of those books were available in Brazil before?

If I'm not mistaken, only the Thrawn Trilogy was released here and it was in 90's, I think. It's really rare to see books and/or comics being released in Brazil, but it seems to be changing.

@Paulo Henrique That's very good news! It's such a universal story, everyone should have a chance to enjoy it in their native language.
