For me, it adds the wrong kind of depth.

The scene ends with Han negotiating a reprieve. It really lowers the stakes for me. Han is in dire straights otherwise. He’s desperate for the money to pay back Jabba because more goons like Greedo will be coming to collect. The cash he gets from this gig is the difference between life and death for him. With that as the looming danger, it’s so much more powerful to me when he decides to go back and help Luke.

He essentially puts his own immediate wellbeing aside in favor of someone he just met. Including the Jabba scene adds the wrinkle that Han could plausibly just talk his way out of the situation again. Get another extension. That version of Jabba seems to be rather reasonable and magnanimous. A way lower threat to me. It isn’t as much of a sacrifice then that he’s willing to put settling his debt on hold.

I have way more gripes with that scene than just this, but that’s the major one. It’s inclusion, I feel, actively damages the story. The movie is directly poorer for having it. That's only my read on it though.

If it annoys you that much, watch Harmy's Despecialized.

Can't recommend Harmy's versions enough. Probably all I will watch from now on, except for Empire.

To me every nes scene in a movie is welcome and Star Wars is not an exception. I would put all the deleted scenes in the original movie.

Same. Not to mention there was Lucas' habit of editing and retroactively changing his films.

Exactly. In ffact I appreciate the remastered version of all 3 movies because there are new scenes and some of the old one where restored with more visual effects.

This would make them poorer films, but... for a laugh, it would be great to get a super-geek version of the films, with all (or rather, most) deleted scenes and the like restored, for those of us who want to se EVERYTHING in the actual films. I sure do :)

The problem isn't the remastered versions, it's the refusal to release the original cuts. Parents can never show their kids these versions and say "this is what they watched when they were a kid".

This is a central problem, an quite weird. Even the Nat. Library of Congress doesn't have a copy 'cause Lucas refused to give them one of the original version (and the library only counts originals, not remasters and tweaks and what not)

You can get them, just with two caveats:

You have to settle for low quality (the second disk of the DVDs released way back)
You have to acquire them in high quality from a legally questionable source (Silver Screen edition, Harmy's, etc...)

It would be nice to have both high quality and official release.
