I think part of the charm of Vader in Rogue One is that he shows up, cleans house, and is done. He doesn't even technically win (since the plans escape) but the quick and efficient brutality makes it feel like he did. Any prolonged exposure to that, as already stated, would take away from his "I'm here to clean up the mess you idiots made" charm.

Even in the Vader comics, we have Aphra and the droids often as a side to Vader's story, providing Vader a way to have shorter and more to-the-point scenes.

As far as an R rating goes- I really don't think Star Wars ever needs one. We had excessive violence in ROTS, Rogue One, and many others and its been great even with a PG-13 rating. We've had romance in the Prequels, and it was awful. We even have Star Wars style profanity in the books, and it's just silly. I don't think this formula needs as much of a shake up as X-Men did- because the X-Men (and especially Deadpool) source material is already kinda R rated. Star Wars isn't. It would be like the rumors that the Mega Man movie might be R-rated... seems like a cognitive dissonance between fans and the film.

I thought it was one non-sexual use of the F word.

R rated SW talk is 2 mainstream. I say we take it up to NC-17!

Kidding aside I think the only way we get staR waRs is if it's on Netflix. It may not even have the name SW in it to show its not 4 all. Call it Space Corsairs or something like that. Have them operate a sin based operation like a Casino with Twi'leks in fishnets. They have gladiator fights where limbs get sliced off. Have the protaganist be a sex slave who wants to escape.

    It could work.

Slightly off topic and a little morbid (apologies), but I imagine if they wait a long time to make a Vader movie they may need to do so with a different voice actor. I pray the legendary JEJ is with us a long time. But I'm just wondering how people would feel about someone else doing the voice of Vader in the future. I imagine the reaction would be similar to the re-casting of Han Solo.

Voice libraries. Very similar to what they do with video games at times.

Mr Jones can essentially record a voice library of all the major sounds in the English language and LFL and ILM have the money and tech to make it sound natural.

And given the mechanical overlay to Vader...it would work easier than most.

It used to be, but it changed to two in the mid-to-late 2000s/early 2010s. Presumably it changed again from there.

Depending on how the violence is presented and handled, a great deal. Cauterized wounds that don't bleed is a big factor. Also, when the violence is used against non human characters who don't bleed red blood, that allows for much more leeway as well. Look at the Lord of the Rings trilogy for instance. We see tons of gruesome violence against the orcs and other creatures. If that were done to human characters and shown in the same way the films would've gotten an R Rating for sure.

The violence definitely diminished after the first movie, once there were more humans/elves involved in battles.

As for Star Wars doing an R film... I just don't see it. I know people swear up and down that Star Wars was meant to be this sophisticated thing for adults, but I believe that it always intended to be universal and accessible, something that older kids can watch.
