I am with you man. Until the show says, “This is Bob Smith, aka The Mandalorian,” I will remain convinced he is actually Boba Fett. Five years after ROTJ, on Tatooine, new armor (old armor had acid burns according to Aftermath), and he is a bounty hunter.

I think Boba will be in this. How secretive and vague they were during the panel (really didn't give us any new information about the show). He's either going to The Mandalorian himself or maybe another major player that show up in the series or Boba will be a major plot point for the series. Having him appearing in this show could be a great payout. I said this once before, I have the felling The Mandalorian show is based on the concepts of the rumored Boba Fett movie. One thing about the rumored movie, they never specified the time frame of when that movie was suppose to take place. Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't Boba Fett take on a new name temporally in the old EU? I knew he had a new ship called the Slave II. Besides, you have probably 2 of the biggest SW fans working on the series, i'm sure they will include Boba in some way.

Watch his [Pascal's] name be Jodo Kast.

They act like he is a new character, but won't tell us his name. This alone tells me that it isn't a new character. Even though Pascal doesn't look like Jango/Boba, they could give him the Deadpool look, and say that his skin was terrible burned from the Sarlac's stomach acid.

I agree about The Mandalorian basically replacing the Boba Fett movie. Some time ago when discussing the Boba Fett stand alone I predicted the title would be The Mandalorian and start on Tatooine with Boba escaping from the Sarlacc, then having a taking stock of his life moment, followed by helping Mandalore come from Imperial control and finally being considered a true Mandalorian. Not saying that's the direction the series is going, especially with the 5-year gap between ROTJ and The Mandalorian.

Footage looks awesome, don't think it's Boba Fett. I would not be surprised if its his brother (another Jango clone that someone had that lived). I think that would be an interesting wrinkle. Especially if they go head to head.

I hope Fett and Mandalore both come no where near this series.

They could still show him escaping the Sarlacc in a flash back or something if they want to go in that route.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking too. Use flashback, or tidbits of nightmares, to preserve the mystery. Although, you wonder how long they could keep that secret. The Mandalorian has supposedly already been renewed for a second season. It would be nearly impossible to keep the secret under wraps for so long.

They were pretty secretive during the Mandolorian Panel, we didn't learn anything new information about the series except for few more character names. Anything is possible at this point and the secrecy of SW information has been done pretty well. Around this time before Episode 7, the movie was pretty much leaked or most of the details about the movie was leaked. This time around TLJ, we loosely knew where the story was going to go, but now, we virtually have no detailed leaks of Episode 9. They withhold the title of Episode 9 for months. LFM has really up their game on secrecy over the years.

It's just odd that they give us the other characters names, but not the Mandalorians. This is what leads me to believing that it is a name we would recognize.

They have said the show is influenced by the old westerns and Clint Eastwood's old westerns. The Leone western's his character had no name, well that is the general myth. He did have names or nick names in those movies.

That Leone style character with no name is probably what we are getting here. Not everything needs a mystery box.

That is a movie though. I just don't see several seasons of a television show with no name for the main protagonist.

Btw guys, the droid is IG-11, not 88.

Also, this theory that The Mando is Boba Fett is utter crap because Boba isn't even Mandalorian...he's just a clone who wears Mando armour.

Outside of Boba Fett, I was also thinking he could potentially be Tristan Wren, Sabine's brother. I think you are right, though, his name has significance.

    From Wookieepedia:

Jango Fett was born in the years prior to the Invasion of Naboo.[1] He claimed to have been born on the planet Concord Dawn,[2] a Mandalorian world,[8] but the exact authenticity of this claim was unknown. He wore Mandalorian armor after becoming a bounty hunter and assassin for hire,[1] a fact that led officials of Mandalore to disavow any connection to Fett, claiming he was simply a bounty hunter who somehow stole an artifact from their planet's troubled past.

During Kenobi's visit to the planet Mandalore, he had a brief conversation with Prime Minister Almec about the late Jango Fett. Almec declared that the bounty hunter was not a Mandalorian despite the armor he wore.

    Prime Minister Almec
: "Jango Fett was a common bounty hunter. How he acquired that armor is beyond me."

If I recall from the episode, Almec had some disgust as he talked about Jengo. So I think there is more to the story of Jengo's heritage. I think that is the only canon on Jengo and whether he is or is not a Mandalorian. As an "unaltered" clone, Boba might be seeking an identity. If Jengo was/believed he was a Mandalorian and told Boba he was too, then its plausible Boba believed he was Mandalorian and continued that identity. He was probably also aware that claim was disputed by some.

I thought it was at least interesting that in the episode footage shown at Celebration, as the Mandalorian is leaving, Wener Herzog's character says something to the affect that it would be good to see Mandalore restored to its former glory, the Mandalorian pauses for a moment, doesn't say anything, and leaves.

What if it's possible that the character Pascal plays is simply called "The Mandalorian" and we don't ever really get a name other than that? During the panel they really emphasized the fact that inspiration for this character came from westerns so names like "The Lone Ranger" and "The Gunslinger" seem to mirror how they approached naming Pascal's character. Don't get me wrong I think we will definitely see plenty of references to legends/The Holiday Special content because that's what Favreau and Filoni said in the panel, but I think the title character may remain a mystery for a good amount of the show if not permanently.

I think it very much depends on how long they want this show to go. If it's only going to be one season, keeping him a mystery would be pretty great. But if it starts to get into more seasons, it's going to be tricky to keep the audience interested in someone who has no identity.

It's already locked in for two seasons and unless it completely flops (which I doubt based on the general vibe walking around Celebration post panel) I can see this show sticking around for a good while on Disney+. They can definitely flesh out the character without giving him a specific name other than "The Mandalorian" with possibly more and more background on the character as the seasons progress.

That is true, I forgot it had a second season lined up. I just don't always trust the contracts that claim multiple movies or seasons. It's really just a formality in case they want to keep doing more, and they have a paper that says "You have to, you signed it."

The problem with fleshing out a character of mystery is that you can't give away too much. As much as I love Doctor Who, the past several seasons really leaned into his past much more than is good (partly because they started contradicting earlier stories), but it started taking away what makes the Doctor so troubled and interesting.
My concern for the Mandolorian is that he isn't an identifiable character. He's a character I don't want to know much about. And whatever we do learn about him, I really don't want his character progression to change who he is by the end of the show. That's kinda tricky for a show.
A handful of movies works because they are more self contained and we don't have to know what happens to the protagonist after the stories have ended.
