Mayimbe has a good track record and lots of contacts in the industry that feed him these scoops. I'm not saying its a lock but it's a bit more than a twitter theory.

I think RJ has been expected to do it. JJ is still on board though as executive producer.

If Disney is interested in him to direct Episode IX that must mean that TFA is a great film and Disney is happy with it.

It says in the article that Disney has liked what they have seen so far. It seems like he may be in consideration. I think Disney will wait to see how the fan reaction is before they would consider making a decision. They may like it but if the fan reaction is not great, I don't think JJ would be back.

Okay, not excited. I think he will do very well with 7. He is the hollywood "set-up" man, but he is not a closer.

Alias - Pilot, awesome, downhill from there
Lost - Season 1, awesome, downhill from there
Mission Impossible 3, awesome, Mission Impossible 4, new director, even more awesome
New Star Trek, Awesome, Into Darkness, downhill

I just don't think he has the chops to get past "look at this cool set-up" even though I think he sets-up with the best of them.
my vote would be for a different director for all three, like the OT.

Hope this turns out to be true. Almost everything Abrams has done has been great. I have every reason to believe TFA, and possibly Episode IX, will follow suit.

    My thoughts too.
It would be a really confident sign if Disney would announce JJ as the director for Episode IX before VII hits the big screen in december.

The idea that LR doesn't get scoops is really outdated. They get far more right these days than they get wrong. People just remember the stuff that doesn't happen more than the stuff that does. No one in the spoiler/scoop business will be right 100% of the time.

@Fartkraum why did you rate me clouded just for posting the news? Don't shoot the messenger.

With only two years between films, directing back-to-back installments would be near impossible. Episode 8 is almost certainly in pre-production already - I'd be shocked if they hadn't already finished a first draft of the screenplay and started work on the concept art - and it would be a mistake to ask a director to work on two massive movies like this simultaneously (unless they were shooting them all at once like LotR). It took Lucas 3 years to per movie, because each installment got started only after the previous one was completely finished. A two year gap between episodes doesn't afford that luxury.

I always assumed JJ would direct Episode 9 if he wanted to.

Obviously it really depends on the quality of TFA, but if it's as good as I hope it will be I'd be excited to see JJ back for IX.

Given all the steam from Jurassic World... I REALLY think Colin Trevarrow will be directing Ep 9.

Safety and Jurassic World have been so well received, and he has the attention of Frank Marshall, Kathy Kennedy, Spielberg, and Brad Bird. He can mix big budget spectacle and characters, and he's a fresh new name.

My only thought is they might want to go with a "safer" bet, like Abrams or Vaughn, who have done many of these big budget films, as opposed to just one.

Colin has a movie he's doing this fall, called "Book of Henry" and then a movie for Dreamworks with Spielberg next year called "Intelligent Life." This would mean he's likely busy till the end of 2016, but that's plenty of time for him to be ready for an early 2018 production date. He's ruled himself out of the Boba Fett film, but I really would put down money that he's either doing Ep 9 or the 3rd Anthology film.
