Alderaan and the Death Star

    The way I still see it there was no way for the ordinary people of Alderaan to actually see the Death Star in the sky.

    It was broad daylight on the bright side of Alderaan. Even though the Death Star appears to be holding position what looks like the center of our distance to our moon, it's still only 100 miles large and would therefore look rather tiny.

    I'm enclosing an image from the Star Wars Art: Ralph Mc Quarrie book, because AFAIK that's the first time we see McQuarrie's matte painting outside the actual film (being held by Dave Jones):

    Simple answer. Alderaanians are taught as children never to look up, because the weight of their heavy hair buns will cause a neck injury.
