    updated 5.27.2017.

    Prologue

30 years ago, the remnants of the Imperial forces ( First Order to become ) escaped in to Unknown Regions jumping from Jakku.

That did not supposed to happen in this way.

    Palpatine had this plans(Contingency plan):

plan A. If the Galaxy rejects his rule , he will escape with the elite into Unknown Regions and there rebuild his"perfect" Empire. A superstar destroyer was already sent and parked and waiting for him in the Unknown Regions.
plan B. If he dies, his Empire goes down with him and last remnants are to be destroyed by gathering and setting Jakku to explode with all of them( task assigned to Admiral Gallius Rax).

But , third unexpected (and not planned) scenario actually happened.

Palpatine died. Gallius Rax failed to execute his order of blowing up Jakku and gathered forces there, and many of those Imperials jumped into Unknown Regions.
They were never supposed to go out there leaderless, without powerful Palpatine

Palpatine knew something "powerfull and dark" was waiting out there. This entity(Snoke obviously) manipulated and hijacked leaderless Imperials out there.

    Elaborate:

I am reading newest Canon novel Thrawn .

Thrawn informs Emperor Palpatine there is a major threat , including for the mighty galactic Empire, coming from the Unknown Regions of the galaxy.
Thrawn's own people , his race (Chiss) lives in the Unknown Regions and they already met this not jet identified threat. Thrawn claims that this menace endangers his own people but also could the Empire itself , if not prepared, and reports this to Emperor Palpatine in the canon novel.

We also Know from the Aftermath novel, that the Emperor Palpatine felt some Dark Presence, and "source of Dark side" in the space beyond known Galaxy. We know that Palpatine's order was that portal at Jakku( entire planet) was to be destroyed in case of his death (Contingency plan), but this was prevented, and the remnants of the Empire escaped into Unknown parts of the galaxy, without Palpatine as their strong leader. This, obviously was not the original plan of the Palpatine.

Could it be that remnants of the Empire that escaped into Unknown Regions from Jakku, have been , unknowingly, hijacked by the extragalactic invaders, led by their powerfull and cunning Supreme Leader -Snoke, who is acting to be some lone powerfull mysterious authority?

Please note in the following lines I am speculating and I believe this story could be a guiding idea for the Snoke's race and what is about to come.

My general idea is that Snoke is Extragalactic imposter, a puppet master, he hijacked remnants of the Empire, named them First Order, takes them as pawns, and in fact a hostages, use them for Galactic civilization to bleed itself in between themselves, and than he plans to strike leading his main force, his own race, a "Chosen race" , and kill them all.

I believe Snoke is in fact a Supreme Overlord (Leader) of the extragalactic race that is covertly and systematically invading the galaxy.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following- story about extragalactic invasion from Star Wars Legends (EU).

Please note that I believe this is just a "template" , a general idea about the concept of the story line in Sequel trilogy , and not literally that race and that story in every detail.

In fact I believe that one of the most controversial stories of Star Wars universe,Yuuzhan Vong invasion, could have been used as template for the greatest story in most outstanding Star Wars twist ever, in the same time deleting Yuuzhan Vong and introducing new complex and more realistic race into a Canon.

"Chosen race"(Yuuzhan Vong) invasion happens around 3 decades ABY which is roughly the timeline of Sequel trilogy. It started actually many decades before by excursions, provocations and probing in the unknown regions. Invasion happened trough Vector Prime---it was a charted point that enabled evading strong natural energy field that protects outer edges of the galaxy.( In the story about Jakku we are dealing with such vectors, ancient charts that enable navigation trough dangerous Unknown regions and wild space).

Thrawn's race(Chiss) were amongst first galactic inhabitans that started to meet that invaders at first only occasionally. Chiss called them "Far Outsiders".They called themselves "Chosen race". They came from another galaxy after their galaxy been destroyed millenia before. The race leader had title Supreme Overlord.
This invasion ended as near genocyde of galactic civilization.

Those aliens had advanced technology that enabled them to manipulate with life, their Machines were living machines.

As they were advancing deeper into a Galaxy, they were reshaping the planets and moons they encountered.

They changed biosphere of many subject worlds to better suit them. The phrase was known as worldshaping, which was performed by their units called shapers.

    Xenoforming
as this process was also called, was the process of changing a previously uninhabitable planet or moon (for that Alien race) into a habitable one for these aliens to feel good on it and live there, in the same time destroying original forms of life on that planet.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, in the trailer, a strange looking ships do something, they are "srcratching" the surface of the planet, and trough that contact with the surface a red unusual substance emerges , it looks like some kind of reaction between ships and soil. Why would they scratch the planet's surface causing reaction in the soil?

Are this alien SHAPERS? Snoke's race is attacking and in the same time xenoforming a planet?

This ships have insectoid extending attachments on their "belly" ,see the pic I posted please, which they exend to make contact with soil. Almost like an large mosquitoes, and mosquitoes carry dissease (or in this case xenomorphing whatever substance, just my inner feeling).

If it will be some local ships made for just fight on that plateu on that planet it will be strange.

So I think those are universal fighting machines designed to operate near ground , used for-that what they are doing, making something to the soil as a tool of war.

"insectoid " ships are literally ploughing the soil of the planet.

    ________________________________________________________________________

    Snoke
Snoke is unlike anything we sough before in terms of the subtleties of his knowledge of the Force.
There was never a Force user that was said to been able to influence fetus of unborn child in a womb of another Force sensitive woman, doing it from the other side of the Galaxy.(Aftermath, Ben, Lea).
From my point of view his knowledge is unlike anything that was ever met in this Galaxy.
It is the fundament of the Dark Side that is "coming from the space beyond the border of this Galaxy", as the Emperor Palpatine foreseen in the Aftermath novel.

In this recent artistic depiction of Snoke, according to latest available data, the artist realjburns made astonishing reconstruction of what to expect of Snoke's real look.
Snoke doesn't look like some being that has been hiding, waiting for ages in the unknown Regions contemplating about Dark Side, waiting to be found, living ascetic humble lonely life.
He wears golden-silk robe, he has big dark ring(probably Kyber) .
He looks like aristrocrat, he obviously likes and expects luxury, like a king or even emperor, in fact like Supreme Overlord, monarch, head of the state.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If this is true it will be the tuch of genius.

    And want to know why?

Because the story of Vong invasion in fact almost destroyed Star Wars once, it was, in fact hated by many of fans as it left galaxy in ruins.

Only a bold masterminds could make this come back, and redeem it as a perfect story. And I believe in human genius.

Extragalactic invasion will be grace now in the setting of a new story .
At the one defining moment, entire galactic society , leftists, rights, centrists, followers of Light side, followers of the Dark side, New Republic, First Order ,all of them, could unite in a fight against extinction.

It will be also, an opportunity for Kylo, honoring his great grandfather , his heroic father and mother, to turn agains the murderers. Kylo against Snoke, as there is greater meaning even than the Dark side ambition, and that is loyality to his galaxy. Kylo could have chance for redemption, and unconditional love of his heroic father Han Solo who died from his own hand, could be the defining moment to help him to find a strenght to redeem himself in a moment he see coldblooded genocide over the galaxy.Interstingly, Jacen Solo, a character upon which Kylo Ren was built, is a character from Yuzhuan Wars serries(New Jedi Order) and he redeems himself by using Dark side to save the Galaxy from invaders.

In the same way, brave people from the First Order, whose first and greatest value is loyality , will suddenly get another meaning, loyality for the Galactic civilization which they are part of.So the First Order, led by Kylo will have chance for redemption in entirety.

At the end with such story we will have galaxy like never seen before . It will be perfect.

I think the galaxy is big enough ffor other threats that are currently unknown and it doesn't really add something to the story to be an outside threat, not too shocking tbh.

My impression of what these ships seem to be doing is to raise a smokescreen to protect the (resistance?) forces from the walkers that can be seen afar?

As for the alien invasion plot possibility, could be. Personaly, I feel quite neutral about it if that's the case. I trust Lucasfilm would do a great job of tying in the extra-galactic alien race with the themes of the force and of peoples unitying for a cause, in this case to join forces to fight an outside alien invasion.

When combining information from Thrawn and Aftermath, it seems that Snoke comes from the Unknown Regions rather than Wild Space (or another galaxy). Those ships on Crait are flying towards AT-AT walkers. We know that the First Order has such walkers. It is therefore likely the ships belong to the Resistance or to another group opposing Snoke's First Order.

RJ says Crait is "way out there" in the Unknown Regions. Possibly the Resistance are the ones making the first attack on a First Order base. I think this planet will be important, maybe even Snoke is here.

See, I've been thinking about this exact thing, but with a different twist. I have been thinking this could possibly happen, and I hope it does. I forsee the entire invasion conflict being its own trilogy. Rey/Luke/Ren (who doesn't really HAVE to be redeemed to do this) could kill Snoke, leaving Kylo Ren in charge of the First Order at the end or beginning of 9. Either way, the very end of 9 could consist of the general audience and other cast members learning of the invasion, setting up Episodes 10, 11, 12 about said invasion. Then Ren and Rey (on a grander scale Resistance and First Order) must work together to save the galaxy from destruction. Although, I also wouldn't mind the next trilogy, if there is one as I assumed they'd do at least two trilogies before doing strict stand-alones or what-not, to be in the distant future ala Cade Skywalker.

I believe this is a scene of fight and not mining, so it puzzles me why are ships inter-reacting with soil.
Mining during battle seems to abitious even for the most precious supstance.
Making "cover screen" again does not fitt I believe that level od tech enables enemy to see trough dust.
Using soil as a source of energy for ships again strange as this restricts speed and versatility of ships which would be usable only on such plateus and near ground and we see those ships are agressively diving to establish contact with the soil..to do something to the soil as a part od attack strategy.
I believe those ships are xenomorphing planet in an advanced alien bio-attack.WE can see insectoid aattachments that this ships exent when the touch the ground to establish contact with the ground.

Its prossibly planet hold by the First Order, those obsolete AT-AT's are doomed, resistance is futile.

In the canon novel Bloodline Leia discovers a paramilitary organization calling themselves the Amaxines, acording to ancient warlike race Amaxines which many millenia ago left the Galaxy.
Now they reappear as a weak force that makes troubles, smuggling, and in fact I thik a probing.

In the EU story about "Choosen race" invasion they brough with themselves their slave race using them for scouting and side attacks.

    Similarities can be listed further.

in EU Invasion happens in time of Luke's expedition in the Unknown Regions.

In this old map from EU about "Choosen race invasion" we see Imperial remnants in the Unknown region (red area), its close to where Starkiller base origin location is in The Force awakens Galaxy map.

The Vong almost killed SW. Then the Prequels saved it. Think about that.

I am not seeing anything in the 1st Order that looks like it is alien to the GFFA. With the possible exception of Snoke and the SKB was a fixed location but could shoot across vast distance.

Also if SKB was in these unknown regions then there was no discussion about getting to and from the SKB through the dangers. I think the unknown regions and wildspace work better as a sort of "Heree There Be Dragons" element to GFFA its Space Fantasy. Aliens from another galaxy is way to science fiction. Its too soon to go in a break all rules direction.

Understand your sentiment and points, but a counterpoint with a comparison to Game of Thrones:

I may be getting this slightly wrong (I haven't read the books or auxiliary material), but three centuries before the era depicted in the show, the Targaryens invaded Westeros from a far-off land, armed with a new terrifying technology: dragons. It was via this technology, which only they could control, that they conquered Westeros and established their dynastic line.

Swap out Targaryens for a set of heretofore unknown aliens from an unknown region of space, and dragons for a new kind of technology heretofore unseen in the SW galaxy, and you have a blueprint taken from Fantasy that matches up with the Sci Fi framework the OP is proposing (though I've seen this scenario proposed on this forum before).

In other words, it's possible a scenario like this could feel aligned with SW's fantasy roots if done right.

Snoke acts as a "mysterious Dark side authority" and a "guru". He is Dark side authority, however he is the leader ofAgressive alien race, he hijacked the commanding place in the First Order .

He seeks every possible way to weaken Galactic civilization(destroying Jedi, taking Ben solo and all Dark siders possible in his army, making subterfuge in the Galactic Senate (known from novels,)

Let me remind that First Order was not intended to happen. According to Palpatine's Contingency plan all Imperial Forces should have been destroyed at Jakku. But it was prevented and they escaped into Unknown Regions.

There, a Supreme Leader took over them,in a circumstance of threat alredy mentioned by Thrawn to exist in those regions.

Strange and already noted many times, that alien is in command of human-biased Organisation.

i didnt mean that they were mining in that scene but they looked like general mining ships to me, maybe they use that soil or whatver they collect to blind and destroy the AT-AT
    .

Good example but its back story. Its part of the world building that they in the past crossed the Narrow Sea and during the events of current to the books that is history its part of the world. This is not a sudden event after the White Walkers are defeated that a never before completely external force of Targarians emerge from an unknown continent. Its the change in style of story telling and the radical change to the Galaxy that doesn't fit.

Yes but there is a distinction between strange creatures live in the chaos of the wild space beyond edges of the galaxy and aliens from the next galaxy over are here to conquer the GFFA. The first is part of the galaxy we have had for 40 years it fits that Space Fantasy tone of space knights fighting monsters going to single biome planets like regions on a fairy tale map; the great desert=Tattoine, the Frozen Wastes=Hoth. The second is hard science fiction. An invasion force has crossed between galaxies and changes the GGFA in ways that have never happened before. It breaks all the rules of world building.

Now I will say it dies have similarities to the Knights of the Old Republic story line with the Rakata home world on the outer edge of the galaxy.

From logistic point of view we have massive problem with First Order, though as a Star Wars fans, if this I am saying is not true, we can close one eye---

but, Remnants of the Empire( First Order) in any scenario are Dwarf compared to New Republic which holds at least 80 % Resources (planets) of the former Empire. And now the First Order fired its gun (Starkiller base) for the first and last time, weakening New Republic like Japan weakened USA in Pearl Harbor-and already lost since Republic ressources are overwhelming, First Order has no any chance, even with Snoke if he is one single Dark Side entity....Snoke must have other unknown forces behind.

firstly, to the OP @McDiarmid ..
You have put a lot of thought and work into this.. thank you. These are the threads that keep me coming back to the cantina.

as per most things in the EU.. the Yuuzhan Vong story line split opinion, although i suspect there were more dislikes than likes. I loved the idea, but i simply don't think it was done well.

If you are familiar with the Vong story, then you cannot discount the knights of Ren... they were holding what appeared to be low tech melee weapons and we could not see any faces.

is it too soon to go in this direction? i don't know.. lot of people wanting the story to move away from the Vader arc.

I agree. if i had to guess, i'd say the resistance are taking advantage of local vehicles and the terrain to defend themselves against the walkers.

I (and a few others) have subtly hinted around the forum that Star Wars could go in this direction. There was such hatred from some for the Vong story line that it's a difficult theory to promote. If it were done differently.. better, then i think it's a possibility.

What does Snoke want? he didn't seem to give a crap about blowing up the Hosnian system.. that was Hux driving that idea. All Snoke seemed interested in was NOT allowing anyone to find Luke Skywalker.. not finding Luke, but making sure nobody did. Snoke agreed with Hux to use the weapon the first time.. when he ordered the strike on the resistance, that was purely to destroy all avenues to Luke.

If Snoke doesn't care about the republic, or the resistance. and i'm sure he doesn't care about the FO, then what is he up to?

I think this invasion idea is on the table. i have no idea how likely it is.. but my mind stays open to it.
