When Jedi was still in early development there were rumors that producer Gary Kurtz wanted a bitter sweet ending to the trilogy and George Lucas wanted his happy ending. The apparent ending proposed by Kurtz was going to end with Han Solo getting killed in the battle of endor. We then would see Leia having to be in charge of rebuilding the New Republic and being busy with politics. It would then cut to Luke Skywalker and R2 on a planet (in my mind it would be Tatooine) and they basically just walk into the sunset bringing the curtain down on the trilogy. It's ambiguous whether Luke is going to rebuild the Jedi order or not. All the stuff with Vader and the Emperor would've been the same. But Kurtz and Lucas had their creative differences and Lucas got his happy ending.

I have to say the more I think about it, I really love this alternate ending, it's not entirely happy but it's not entirely sad either. It's very bittersweet and more mature I think. I can imagine the ending playing out in my head perfectly. I think Lucasfilm should end the new trilogy this way, make it bittersweet but satisfying.

I really prefer the ending we got to that somber one.

I preferred the original to, a galaxy under occupation for so long deserved to celebrate it's freedom.
check the alternative ending imagination out there.

In my head the proposed ending would be like the ending to Revenge of the Sith. We'd cut to Leia becoming queen or whatever with C-3PO and she looks out from her tower while her musical queue plays, then it would cut to Luke and R2. Luke I still wearing his black Jedi robe and he puts his hand on R2 while he beeps and he looks out on the sunset and the last shot is both of them walking into the sunset while the force theme plays. It's great! I like the ending we got, but I also just like to imagine this ending as well. Listen to the music and just picture it in your head!

The ending we had was fitting. Original release, of course.

Just realized Episode 7 did almost exactly what Kurtz and Kasdan wanted to do with the OT characters in 6.

    Lukes gone
Leia is the "queen "(of the resistance )
    Solo dies.

hmm..... nah I prefer Lucas happy ending in VI.

edit: btw the ending of III would have been extremely depressing and bittersweet too, without the existence of the OT.
I dont know how I would feel if IX ends on such a depressing note as well, especially if they stop making saga movies after IX.

Alternate ending. Why? Han Solo, that's why.

We meet him as the smuggler who's only in it for the money. To see him sacrifice himself for a cause would have completed the character.

It was just too poetic not to do. It would have been a statement that defined the entire character and made Han Solo 10x the hero he already is.

Luke & Leia leave to start restart the jedi order again.
Han goes back to Cloud City with Lando for a sabaac rematch.
    Ewoks wave them goodbye.
A faint Sidious laugh can be heard.

You know, back in the day I had never heard that Han was supposed to die in ROTJ but I did hear alot that it was really Lando who was going to die inside the DS. I had heard that something happened and Lucas changed his mind and added him at the end of the film. I googled around to see if othershad heard about this and yes they did. Look at a conversation where two SW fans mention this:

I am aware that Han wanted his character to die but it was going to be in TESB and not in Jedi. That was the reason for the whole Carbonite thing because Lucas wasn't sure that Ford would be back to play Han.

Alternative ending: (intended to mirror some scenes from EP3)
(nothing changes from the original till Vader throws the Emperor in the well) Right after Vader has made his glorious move and the Emperor is dead, Luke takes his father's mask off. "Let me see with my own eyes" - "But you will die!"
Yes. He will die. In fact, Anakin Skywalker is truly and already dead, 20 years ago, and Leia (and so was his mother, 25 years ago) was mistaken: there is no more good in that Sith Lord. Vader is a pure Sith, not a simple fallen Jedi, and what he is doing is his last treason ... because y'know, treason is the genuine Sith way. So yes, Vader is about to die.
    - Luke... You don't know the power of the Dark Side. It doesn't simply allow you to overtake your enemies. You can...
(music of the Coruscant Opera softly playing in background. Voice of Senator Palpatine: "Dark Side is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be ... unnatural")
    - ... you can cheat death.
    - What d'you say, father?
    - Obiwan killed the true Anakin, Luke, throwing him in a bunch of lava. But the Dark Side allowed Darth Vader to live. You can still make me live... but you must embrace the full body of the Force...
Luke hesitates: must he save his father, or remain loyal to the Jedi teaching? Can his father lie to him when he says he can make him live? Will Luke witness his death? Is it a true Jedi way to let a person die? Does Leia deserve to know her father, too?
By the floor, Darth Vader is.... seemingly agonizing (furtive pictures of Sidious, lying on the floor under the threat of Windu's blade) "Save me... Luke... my son... join the Dark Side... and save me..."

    And Luke turns.
He turns because of too much pity in his heart : he no more cannot consider letting his father die in front of his eyes. He turns, because he is too young, and even he is a Jedi Knight, much to learn he still has... He turns considering this was the only way to save his father. He just wanted to save his father. He just wanted to be good.
He turns, because in the end, treason is the genuine Sith way. Vader won his last fight, and fullfilled his destiny: destroy the Jedi, destroy the Sith, and bring balance to the Force. The end shot show Luke leaning over Vader, whispering: "I pledge myself to your teachings..." while the light is darkening more and more around him. In the same time, Leia is shown suffering a heart attack (furtive pictures: Yoda on Kashyyk when order 66 is pronunced, ObiWan feeling Alderaan destruction) while her ship is flying right into the light of hyperspace speed...

This ending alternates the shadow that surrounds Luke and the light that illuminates Leia. The Choosen One's offspring is on its way. That Choosen One, who destroyed the fanatics (both Jedi and Sith are to be considered fanatics) and brought the true, the only balance, by having two children, each embodying the light and the dark in the way they are: TWINS. Neither different nor antagonists. TWINS. Born at the same time and bound forever.

There is no light without shadow.

As an ending, the original one (I mean, the very first version from the theatrical release) is quite weak. The one from 1997 SE is much better, and it gives the feeling of a total victory on the evil Empire.

Alternate ending : everything is the same but the last scene is SNOKE sitting on a dark throne saying " I see. I see."
