I recently rewatched the early episodes of TCW (which obviously aren't the best to go on for this, but I shall continue nonetheless) and I realised just how different Anakin is in TCW when compared to the PT (particularly AotC and RotS).

In the PT we see a conflicted young Jedi slowly walking the path to the dark side. Anakin possesses a certain quality of unstable arrogance and is clearly still learning. The darkness in him is very obvious and his lack of emotional stability is always in the background.

In TCW Anakin seems much more in control and responsible. He seems like a functioning adult with a purpose and a great sense of moral judgement, which almost seems opposite of the character we see slowly becoming Vader in the films. In that respect, I almost feel like TCW doesn't accurately represent that internal struggle aptly, which I understand is probably a product of their target audience.

I realise from reading on other threads that a lot of people prefer TCW Anakin and thus may disagree with me, so it would be great to hear your thoughts!

I think they realized how annoying film Anakin ended up being and tried to avoud that. There's also the possibility that having his own Padawan geounded him in many ways and her leaving him and the order caused him to revert to his former, selfish ways.

Anakin has always been very quick to attachment and surprisingly loyal (his mother, Ahsoka, Padme, the Emperor, his son). We also know he doesn't handle loss well.

He always attached himself more to those he felt he needed to protect (including Palpatine), TCW shows this very well and also shows that never viewed Obi Wan that way. Kenobi was more his rival and at best his older brother, but as he says before "Obi Wan can take care of himself).

All that being said, make no mistake, TCW certainly shows the double life Anakin lives as well as his darkside tendencies (he certainly force chokes a few people and the Mortis arc makes it very clear).

Yes, I suppose Ahsoka was a greats means by which they could enhance Anakin's confusion and mistrust of the order and I do agree about the having an apprentice rendering him more responsible.

I personally think Episode III Anakin is executed wonderfully, as we do see a bipolar quality to his instability, but I can see that the dialogue and, at times, the acting can let that down. AotC and TPM Anakin were just plainly irritating though bar a few moments.

I suppose my main quarrel with TCW Anakin is that he seems a bit too level headed and stable, but I suppose it comes with the territory - you wouldn't want something targeted at a younger audience portraying an emotionally unstable character with a seriously grey idea of morals who is also meant to be the protagonist we're routing for!

You've got a fair point at the difference, but as @Shawshank described, they do get around to showing the more disturbing side to him.

You'll get used to an almost casual use of force-choking soon enough, and at some point, even fist fighting from Anakin. The massive jealousy factor is still present as well, as some episodes specifically deal with.

The Anakin in the clone war series is more softer than in the movies or novels.

Meh, I'd say that depends on the movie. Softer than the Anakin that is in RotS for sure, but that movie takes place after TCW. He's more along the lines of AotC's Anakin, albeit less of a mopey teenager, but overall he's darker.

I suppose in many ways AotC Anakin is, as you said, a mopey teenager with a degree of arrogance, but more about what he will become than what he is. We also see self conflict in the form of him explaining the Tusken slaughter to Padmé. He seems as if he's confessing at first but then justifies it not only to Padmé, but also himself.

Meanwhile, RotS Anakin is very self assured in his abilities and thoughts and is less a mopey, moody teenager and more akin to a corrupted and confused young man. In that way, I suppose they are very different whilst also exhibiting the same outward emotions.

In that case, TCW Anakin is almost a mid point between the two, as it shows Anakin gaining that confidence, but also the development of that self conflict and, as several people have pointed out, we see him progressing into dark side territory with the choking and killing and such.

I suppose the main difference in that case is that Anakin does come across as softer and a bit more mellow, but that could just be the mid point between confident and cocky? Or it could be the clear influence of Obi Wan?

From my view, I'd have to say they intended to represent him at that midpoint. He received I would say a mixed reception from the movies, and they needed to gain a bit of respect from the fan base towards him.

Thus they bring him in, make him a bit more responsible, and with Obi-wan a bit more distanced yet still able to rein him in when needed. Fans can discuss whether he more soft or mellow, more whiny or whatnot from the movies, but I'm sure most of us would agree that he's certainly more responsible and respect-worthy in TCW.

Though I feel TCW was still able to show some of the reasons why he lost his responsible demeanor, what with the loss of Ahsoka that was beyond his control or influence, the attachment he formed to his clonetroopers (he was a rare Jedi that seemed to show concern for them and view them with certain humanity), and all the happenings behind-the-scenes with Padmé and jealousy of who she spent her time with.

Yes, I do agree with you! I think I need to re watch the latter end of the series, as it's a little hazy in my memory, but I do recall a representation of his struggle and his change! I think this discussion's turned me around on this a lot. I kind of see the difference as necessary now!

Nice topic, been on my mind for a while too. For those of you haven't seen them, on starwars.com, The Clone Wars Legacy, a 4 episode Utapau arc was released with incomplete animation, but voicing all done. It really shows the Anakin of ROTS appearing. His foundation with Ahsoka was cracked, his wife and the Banking Clan guy made his love life worse, his increased anger and power through the series actually, in a sense break. These episodes not only are a good continuity addition, as his hair, which has been growing longer and longer, now is ROTS length, but it also shows the more biting disgust he feels toward himself and others. He isn't a hero to himself anymore after his life has taken a turn for the worse, personal failure or not. I like ROTS Anakin a lot, especially his emotional connection scene with Padme in the Jedi Temple, and this scene is only amplified with his confusion from his mistakes and now the Jedi and Palpatine both using him. Anakin from AOTC was whiny and all, but I really need at least a novel that takes place in the first few battles before he meets Ahsoka, where he realizes what it means to be a hero and be a great courageous man, but Anakin of TCW to ROTS? I say its handled really really well, as I really have a grudging understanding and respect for ROTS Anakin.

Here are the Utupau arcs. Forget the animation, this arc is really great and has both OT and PT feels.

I will have to check those out soon! Re watching TCW from the start at the moment since I feel like I missed a lot the first time, which was only highlighted while reading Tarkin.

As you said, the transition from TCW to RotS is executed well, which is something I've under appreciated until recently. You are spot on about the lack of transition from AotC to TCW though. I really like your idea of a novel covering that gap and the concept of Anakin learning to become a hero! I dunno what's coming next after the Ventress novel, so maybe we'll get something in the future!

Indeed. I really think it would work well with the Hero With No Fear nickname he has :)

I find that the CW Anakin was a very likable character, and I see where Luke and leia get some of their good points from.It also explains much of why he turns to the Darkside(Ahsoka's departure,Tarkin's influence, the distrust of the Council e.t.c) and makes his betrayal in Revenge of the Sith all that more understandable.

I see your point, I did feel sorry for him during Ashoka departure she did bring out the best in him as a master & a friend.

I gotta agree with the OP here. While Anakin in TCW was a good portrayal, it always bugged me that it was such a big departure from the PT. I'm always seeing a different person when I compare the two. Even the other animated CW series tried to imitate what the original character was intended.

The Anakin we see in AOTC and ROTS is a character at two separate, major crossroads in his life. I like the TCW Anakin because it gave me an understanding of who this character was on a day to day basis. I really wish they'd stuck with this Anakin in AOTC instead of going overboard with the foreshadowing.

Aren't both actors from The PT? And I think we don't see too much of an accurate depiction of Anakin in TCW because it's called The Clone WARS and not Anakin's Emotions. He and Obi-Wan Kenobi are main characters but the whole point is the war .

Very true, but the show does make a point to show how Anakin is shaped and eventually tortured by the time ROTS comes due to the war.

I love Anakin from the CW, he's powerful, he's the real chosen one in those series. Every time I watch it, I say to myself, Anakin ... what did you do ... :(

He and Ahsoka are great. His relation with Obi Wan is really funny. His relationship with R2 is awesome.

I love the Clone Wars very much.
