In the world of comics and novels they already have a diverse array of genders and ethnicities focused on as main characters. Like new characters like Shara Bey and Zare Leonis or old favorites such as Lando.

The probably with SW male or female is that there so darn goody goody I wished more "grey"characters like Han Solo or Qui Gonn would show up. But the bad guys are soooo much cooler and there always majority male. But female villains are cool too

Star Wars is about escaping from the nonsense of our universe, not finding a politically correct lead role.

The United States is the largest individual market for Star Wars.

There's no justification for white male default everything when white men (non-hispanic or latino) are 30% of this population. The percentage of straight white males (non-hispanic or latino) that exist is less than 30% as well. It's also a shrinking demographic.

EDIT: updated with latest population estimate from the U.S. census bureau.

You know what's crazy about this whole gender/racial thing? What people have to realize is during the initial audition phase there has never been a specified race/gender until they further down the pool of actors...it happened for ANH and happened for TFA with the exception being the prequels because they were, well...prequels.

I bet the sexist idiots who have a problem with another female lead are the same ones who ran that boycott movement for Episode 7 because John Boyega is black and he played one of the main heroes. (smh)

People who say these things might think they're Star War fans, but they really aren't. They don't really know SW. We've always had strong female characters in the franchise since the original trilogy, and this fictional universe is an incredibly diverse and expansive one. Why does the lead always have to be a white guy? There's always room for more great cinema heroines besides Ripley, Katniss, Furiosa, and Rey.

No reason to fall into the "no true scottsman" fallacy. You can be a star wars fan and a bigot.

I sorta fall inbetween most positions. I don't care what the actor looks like. I'm never bothered by what race or gender they are, but also don't think every profession needs to mirror US demographics.

Why don't more people get upset that there aren't more Asians in the NBA, or that 95% of kindergarten teachers are female? As long as we lower barriers to entry, and let everyone apply for everything, I'm happy.

It's going to interesting come fall when the casting for the Han Solo film is revealed. Specifically the casting of the lead female role. Will they have a Woman of color as the lead female to be more diverse and to not seem like they're only casting brunette Caucasian females for every star wars film?

But if they did cast a WoC, will there be complaints that she doesn't get to be the star but only a supporting character to Han unlike Daisy or Felicity.

Plus whoever this woman is, we know she won't become a staple of Han's life like Leia will be.

I think the comics recently showed he had a wife before ANH who was a Black woman. She might be in there come to think of it.

At the time, there was a hiatus that caused me to lose interest in the new comics because they were delayed for some reason. The addition of a wife we didn't know about seemed like an indication that they were going to be randomly shoe-horning in ret-cons of all kinds to drum up interest in what is otherwise a relatively uneventful period in the story's timeline.

Not sure why a creative mind has to self-censor certain ideas, just because he doesn't want to sound like a propagandist, or agenda driven dude. Sometimes the reasoning behind it is more on a smaller scale, like his own family. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, like Freud said. Once a creative mind is limited in the story he isn't working under creative freedom.

Without spoiling anything, the wife thing doesn't quite play out as expected. You can be sure she is not as important as if she were his real wife in a consenting marriage. Not much of a chance of seeing her in the movie...

I have no issue with female roles, in fact i welcome it.. It opens the SW market to a lot more people and that means we will see more Movies, games and books come out..

i think that what makes certain people feel as if they are being hit on the head and being pulled out of the "immersity" of the movie is indeed the familiarity of the quotas and the " social rules " that they see in the movie. diversity is great but if you are smart, you will see that the quotas are similar in a lot of films and it can make the viewers angry Not because they cannot "tolerate" other races but because they recognise that the movie's director or producer or even STUDIO does not have Creative freedom. it ruins a movie that has a very important role: escapism. also, having diversity in films is important but you cannot use it to try to convince every movie director in every country to do so because it goes beyond film making and straddles in the area of politics. ( yay escapism ) the main role of diversity is to introduce equality and respect to other races/cultures but if you Force (no pun intended) cultures to coexist regardless if you know if they are compatible or not or for any other reason, then what is the point in saying that your intent is to introduce equality and respect ?

i absolutely Loved every role in the force awakens but when we got to the scene where starkiller base destroys the planets and we see the closeup shot of a darker skin female console operator, it pulled me out of the film because then whats the point of using the fascist symbolism in a lot of the scenes where we see the general Hux and military fascist forces of the empire ?
i know salma hayek once talked about the lack of female latina roles in movies an i thought that a latina actress would have been perfect for Jyn Erso. why a british type ? isnt that anti diversity ?

for science fiction on the other hand, diversity is way easier to introduce, just look at how everyone loves Ripley in alien (1979) or how great idris elba is in prometheus (2012) it was not fantasy, its was not escapism.

Huh? Why? Everyone can be fascist. The First Order is different anyway. They have women and human of all kind in their ranks.

Ripley was written to be a man. But the character became a woman. Best idea without the whole current year mentality but a great spin on things.
Idris Elba wasnt new Yaphet Kotto as Parker was there first.

Are you for real? Civilisation began in the middle east long before the Roman Empire*. And those people weren't exactly white. Who knew what their sexual preferences were? I think you have a lot of getting clued in to do.

*The jury is still out on whether this was a good thing or not.

I think that as long as the choice of an actor is good, who cares about if it's a man or a woman. There are just as many interesting female characters in Star Wars as there are male.

Actually, I disagree with this. There SHUOLD be as many interesting female characters in the Star Wars universe as there are males, but we're not quite there yet :) There are still loads of avenues to explore. That said, I agree that the character and skill of an actor is a lot more important than their plumming :)
