Yeah, I am hopeful, too... I just remember Hamill in an interview before RotJ where he predicted the ewoks would, "blow the Smurfs into hyperspace"

If Twitter and Facebook had existed in the Prequel era, he probably would've said similar things about those...

    Don't shoot!

No, I agree... it is always good when the actors have faith in the movie, they (ostensibly) know more than we ever will... and some actors don't support the movie when then get done. But all things with a grain of salt...

I'm not sure if this is the case, but most artists, actors, and directors always say that "this is the best yet" on their new work. I believe that Episode VII WILL be better, but i'm just pointing out the "maybe obvious". They either always think that the new material is the best, or they simply wanna sell out. I don't believe this is the "selling out" case though. No matter what, Episode VII will break every record.

Not that it means much but Peter Mayhew retweeted the original tweet but not the AD tweet :)

I am 100% sure Episode VII will be the BEST Star Wars movie ever. Not only it will bridge all Star Wars generations of fans, but will surprise us on many level. I have fate in JJ.

For guys like me (39 years old), it will be like playing with our Kenner toys again.

People have to understand that a classic movie has to have 'it'. No one can explain 'it' but you know 'it' when you watch the movie as just everything comes together. The Godfather has 'it', The Wizard of Oz has 'it', Raiders of the Lost Ark has 'it.' Right now the only SW movies that have 'it' are Star Wars and Empire. Episode 7 can still be a great movie, but I don't know if it will have 'it'

    Interesting statement:

I've been covering movies online since the days when the "Star Wars: Special Editions" were only a rumor. During the production of "The Phantom Menace," I had a lot of contact with people working on and around the film, and if I had to characterize the attitude that most of them had, it was "I don't know what we're making." There were plenty of people who seemed nervous about various elements or characters or ideas in what they were making. This time around, every single thing I've heard has been, "Holy cow, I think we're doing this right," and this Tweet from Daniels is just the most public example of that.

Now Anthony Daniels has not seen a full cut of the film yet, but does everyone remember the Episode 1 documentary on the DVD where Lucas, McCallum, Ben Burtt & Co. watch the first full cut of that movie? When the credits roll, they ALL have that look of horror on their face like, "Wait...that's it?" McCallum looks like he's seen a ghost, and even Lucas says, "I may have gone too far on this one?" and "Boggles the Mind?." They then show McCallum, Burtt, and Lucas talking by themselves later on about the rough cut, and Burtt was the only one who was questioning Lucas that the ending saying it was all over the place.

I've just newly discovered that moment for myself when I was watching some reviews of the prequels. I could not believe my eyes/ears. I was also surprised they put that on the DVD.

    Here's that part:

Yeah, I know what you're saying -- they always promote the latest gig. Definitely. However here are two unusual aspects to this thinking:

1- Neither Daniels nor Mayhew to my recollection said ROTS was the best SW movie ever and I'm pretty sure Daniels never said that about any of the PT films
2- Usually these actors and directors you cite say these positive things while they're doing the talk show circuit promoting the project -- these things are being said during production when the action is fresh and they have just read the story, seen the direction and worked with all the actors. In other words, this much early (positive) hype is unheard of. So IMO it holds alot more weight than a promotional circuit would.

Let's face it - everyone tries to be Babe Ruth calling his shot before his big home run at Wrigley during the '32 World Series. But most of the time that doesn't work. Hell, Babe Ruth himself might not have even actually done it.

Yes, it's possible that Episode VII could blow us all away and finally have the "X-factor" that ANH and ESB had. However, it's also natural for those involved in the production to claim that it will, without having any real way of knowing that. IMHO, this is probably what Daniels is doing.

Now, it sounds like the script may be pretty good, at least from the glowing statements of a number of folks with an inside track on the production. (Since I'm trying not to spoil the film for myself, I'm not up on the latest story rumors, so for all I know these glowing statements may or may not be borne out by what's been leaked thus far.)

But better than ESB? There's no way of knowing that until there's at least a rough cut assembled. And I think they're still pretty far from that point.

I'd LOVE for this movie to be that good. But at this point, the stew hasn't even begun to simmer yet. At most, the ingredients on the counter may look like they'll be pretty tasty together. A good sign, of course, but far from a definitive one.

    @Echo-07 & @DEKKA129:
You are both right and give valid arguments. Bottomline though: Better a statement such as this than hearing staff members say "this is crap" :)

As much as Episode I gets criticized, the bonus features on the DVD were great and suprisingly very candid. Lucas even goes on to say to Frank Oz during a conversation (I am paraphrasing), "You know these things can fail. Look at the American Graffiti sequel, nobody came to see it."

That is why I always said that after the backlash to Episode I, I don't Lucas cared anymore and went through the motions with Episode II & III. You can see that there was NOTHING that candid in the Episode II & III bonus DVD material, and also that is when Lucas started the spin machine defending the movies. He went from a God to us from 1977-96 and never really was criticized, to a complete divorce from this part of the fanbase from 1997 on.

I have actually seen the footage of the 'called shot' and he does point straight ahead before he hits a homerun. But the angle they show it, they say he may have been pointing at the pitcher as many Cubs players were talking smack to him the whole World Series.

    Fast Forward to 1:35

Those recordings of the crew watching the first cut of The Phantom Menace...make me so sad. And a little bit righteously angry.
    Anyway.

There will never be a film like Star Wars or The Empire Strikes Back again. They already exist, and they have been a part of life for so long. Yes, Episode VII could end up a terrific experience, but it will still not be Empire. And that's the simple answer - no matter how much blood/sweat/tears goes into its creation, it won't be Empire because Empire's Empire and I love it forever, flaws and all, but I'll gladly eat my black hooded cloak if it turns out I get as emotional about VII as I get with V.

AD is a part time instructor/consultant at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh PA.
My good friend is friends with Daniels. He went to the www.DAVEschool.com & gave the staff/students a good talk. I think the video may be on youtube or the DAVE website.
The Twitter posts are interesting. We will see what it all means next year in 12/2015. ;)

I searched over the forum and couldn't find anything pertaining to this tweet by Anthony Daniels.

    "

    Notice the Line:
Terminal, I hope only in relation to Episode VII. Time will tell.

It was a wrap for me. TERMINAL. Could this mean that something fatal happens to 3po?

I hope, only in relation to Episode VII.
Does this mean he thinks his future in the SW universe is in question?
Could this mean that what ever happens to 3po could mean that he is NEVER coming back?

    Time will indeed tell.

Edit ::: not sure why a mod merged this with the ESB thread as it pertains to a completely separate discussion.

I do see how the term "terminal" could be taken as to mean his character is potentially no longer around - it is an odd place to use that word especially.

I don't think anything the actors or members of the crew say on social media should be seen as implications as to the movies direction or outcome unless it is expressly stated as such.

If it ends up that Threepio is taken out or could be seen as taken out at the end of VII, AD dropped the ball big time with that tweet.
