Agreed. See my previous posts in this thread on this topic. Debated this very thing many times on the LOTR forum. If there was a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being totally did not follow the book to 10 being total book to movie i would rate PJ a 5 for LOTR and a 3 for The Hobbit trilogy. I would have preferred a 7-8.

The most annoying thing about these films is how expensive the extended additions still are.

They were all nice films. I'll watch the Fellowship over and over but i've watched all the others too many times and they now bore me.

The Silmarillion + imagination > LotR & Hobbit movies

I'm slightly ashamed to admit that today I will see "Return of the King" for the first time. This week I saw both "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" and these films feel truly epic in scope. Besides, New Zealand looks so beautiful in these movies, I need to visit it one day (or maybe simply go to Scandinavia, which is increadibly similar in its geography, just a couple thousand kilometres closer.)

The thing is that I've read Hobbit, LotR and Silmarillion a couple of years ago, so I consider myelf to be a fan of Tolkien's work. However, I've somehow missed the films. I've watched the first two with my friend but we've never seen "Return...". Besides, at that time, I found them slightly boring. Thankfully, I grew older and wiser :p and I am able not only to appreciate them but also really enjoy them.

Ah cool, so you know the whole story. I only say they bore me now because I could play out the movies in my mind without watching them. Quite jealous actually that you're watching them for the first time. Let us know your thoughts on Return of the King, the locations are very epic.

This academic year was full of films that impressed me (Three Colours Trilogy by Krzysztof Kieślowski, D. Villeneuve's Arrival, A Serious Man and Inside Llewyn Davis by Coen Brothers, the second half of Rogue One and The Master by Paul Thomas Anderson) and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, particularly The Return of the King can join that group of the films. For quite some time I haven't seen a film that made me so moved, that made cheer so much for the protagonists' goal (even if I know exactly how the story will play out) and that had taken me for such an adventure as The Return of the King did. A truly special film. Sadly, the success of the LotR wasn't repeated with the Hobbit films but that's not the point of this discussion. I guess I now what films should I add to my Blu-Ray collection when I come back home.

The Battle for Helm's Deep is phenomenal, and the score for the whole scene is exceptional.

Love the soundtracks for the films :).

I like it! But the next thing you know, we'll be hearing about how TLJ is too much like TTT. :p

If I'm being completely honest, while I was rewatching the whole LotR Trilogy I've had this feeling in my head that TFA was surprisingly similar to The Fellowship of the Ring.

They are both quest stories, so it makes sense that they would have a similar structure, especially both being the first installment. :)

Howard Shore's compositions are an absolute treat. I wouldn't say he's unappreciated, but he could definitely do with a little more acclaim.

Watching all of the extended additions in a row is both a wondrous and gruelling experience. One I subject myself to every 3 years or so. Fun stuff.

Vote totals on this are pretty even, and surprising. I guess it speaks to how great each film really is. I only chose ROTK because I couldn't really make up my mind, so just went with the one I thought was the most "epic."
