I've never read any of the books, but I like the films...especially the Extended cuts. "The Hobbit" movies were just packed with irrelevant stuff, though.

Yeah, me neither... It says "series adaptation" so if this is something like a reboot of the film trilogy then I'm not really interested. I mean - of course I'll see it because I love LotR, but nothing will outdo Jackson's trilogy. And I don't think we can talk about a potential series being "something different" because at its core it would be an adaptation of the books as well.

Something set in the film universe might have potential. There's no way a series would match that scale, though, unless it's going to have an unprecedented budget and approach.

Amazon really wants to have its own Game of Thrones and it is very visible. They will the an adaptation of a popular and highly acclaimed fantasy book(s), so in that regard they chose well. The only problem is that there is already an on-screen adaptation of Lord of the Rings that is universally loved, still quite recent and is considered to be one of the better, if not the best, book-to-screen transitions in the history of Hollywood. Besides, there is a tale set in the Middle-Earth that would be perfect for a series that hasn't been adapted yet - Silmarillion.

I saw this and got very excited. I also sort of took it with a grain of salt that it would be "Lord of the Rings" since that is pretty much the common title that casual fans go with. The stories and history of Middle Earth is vast and they could pick from many eras. I will absolutely watch a "Lord of the Rings" series, but hope that they will take a leap into other histories and tales.

The Silmarillion as you said, would be great.

The rights to Silmarillion are never being sold off so that's impossible.

Honestly, Amazon should have just picked up The Wheel of Time or whatever instead. Stop trying to create the next Game of Thrones - all you're bound to do is crash and burn.

Because the at-the-time Tolkein estate was opposed to Lord of the Rings films in the first place. Unfortunately for them, the rights to the Hobbit and the LotR books had already been sold, so they couldn't do anything about it. They won't allow the Silmarillion rights to be sold off because they have the power to oppose Middle-Earth content now. Also, they hate some things that Warner Bros. are doing with the brand.

I knew they shouldn't have turned Shelob into a sexy, scantily-clad vamp, I knew it! It's all your fault, Monolith Software. :p

There was also dissention in the family as well. Current patriarch Christopher Tolkien hated the films, while his son Simon actually felt the opposite...and this led to a period of estrangement between them.

So, I went and watched all of the cutscenes involving Shelob and WOW I cannot blame anyone in the Tolkien family for not being unhappy with the things that WB is doing. If they were going to pull the trigger and butcher such a main personality/character within the lore, I cannot imagine what else they would/will do.

I am not super-versed in Tolkien lore, but because I have a decent fear of spiders, I also have a morbid curiosity about them and have researched Ungoliant and her children before, so I did have a grip of who Shelob was.

yeah, i can't help but feel this is an attempt to come up with the next Game of Thrones. they already took a lot of liberty with the characters and story in the films, i can only assume they'll turn LotR into a mess with an ongoing series. fingers crossed if they do go ahead with it they stick a little closer to the canon!

There are a lot of side stories and events referenced during the events of LOTR that could provide years of series based exploration, so long as they don't do what they did to The Hobbit...
    That was a travesty.

No. They're nowhere near as bad as people like to claim.

Are they flawed because they had to be rushed? Definitely, but whether they're good or bad is up to you.

NO the first Two are good films (IMO) the Third has problems but then the original plan was for 2 & then they decided to expand to 3 films which then lead him & adding to the script & then filming almost at the same time which is never a good idea. Is the Hobbit as good as LOTR no but then that is an almost impossible higher standard to meet.

So is what WB did to Shelob in the game widely regarded as an abomination?
