Any Lord of the Rings fans?

I guess, but the games aren't actually canon.

 

I forget. We are spoiled by the current Star Wars continuity.

The past was easy for me too. I just never considered anything but the films to be canon. I enjoyed the EU, but never looked at it as official since George repeatedly said that it was separate.

 

Same. It made it difficult for me to read that much of it. If it wasn't canon I'd rather just make it up with my toys....

 

She can take on human female form.

 

Yeah, Shelob's a shapeshifter. But I think the people annoyed have a problem with her characterisation not appearance in the game.

Edit: okay, I misremembered. I got confused by the evil in spider form.

 

Everything that I have ever read about Shelob that she was an incarnation of absolute evil with an insatiable appetite, born of another spider that was the personification of pure evil.

To turn her into some seductive vamp is ridiculous. I cannot believe with the wealth of available possibilities that they had to work with that it was the best that those writers could do.

 

Shelob wasn't a shapeshifter in any of the books. she's one of the ancient brood of Ungoliant, a force of entropy in the shape of a massive spider from the ancient times when the trees of Valinor still shone. Ungoliant came and drank from the trees and poisoned them and gained immense power. she then escaped to Ered Gorgoroth where she bred with spiders and made that whole land poisonous. when Melian created the girdle around Doriath, Ungoliant fled away to the south and nothing more is told of her. neither she or Shelob are shapeshifters.

 

I enjoyed them as well...
From a big screen spectacle perspective.

However, from a storytelling viewpoint, the films radically changed the tone of the story as intended by the author.

 

I think that if they ever want to make the stories as intended, then it would have to be a GoT-like series with multiple seasons of episodic stories... without the incest, nudity and gore of course.

 

Agreed, What made the world created by Tolkien so enthralling was that it felt grounded in reality. (Much like AGFFA) It felt like a time that could have existed. The LOTR adaptations were so widely lauded because the imagery and character development were in many cases true to the author's vision. The depth of the stories is simply not possibly to explore in a short format, unless you intend to tell the story over a period of years.

Even so I had a few gripes, but they were understandable...with the exception of making Frodo a twenty-something instead of a mature 50 year old and completely ignoring the scouring of the Shire. That changed the intended message considerably.

 

Ah yes, that's where my foggy memory deceived me . I attributed in the shape of a spider with shapeshifting.

 

i'm not sure if entropy was the right word to use, but Ungoliant is a mysterious spider entity from beyond anyone's knowledge; even the Valar don't know where she came from or where she went. it's assumed that due to her insatiable hunger she eventually devoured herself.

 

The wiki says that is indeed what she did. She ran off and got hungry and ate her own legs and died.

I'm glad it's not a retelling of the movie trilogy. Let's hope the show gets a big budget, especially if it's set in the movie universe.

 

they're gonna make up so much garbage to make this work :'(

oh well, at least i still have the books to enjoy...
