    Are expectations/standards too high?

I see a lot of comments about walking out of the movie if this happens/doesn't happen, if the story/character does or doesn't do something, does or doesn't appear.

    There is excitement for sure

But are people ruining the movie experience for themselves by setting unrealistic standards for the movie they expect to see?

If we look at the franchise track record, the last 3 movies were not that great. Why would this one be different?

Sure JJ Abrams and the stars of OT are bringing a new hope. But will that make it awesome?

Could it be doomed by the high standard set? What I mean is if people go watch expecting the perfect movie, then trash it because it didn't do what they wanted it to do. Even if it is a really good movie it may just get pushed aside and considered not on the OT level and possibly just a little better than the PT.

The OT may be held on too high a pedestal. It is difficult to feel the same/greater emotions you felt doing something for the first time. Some people will chase that original emotion for the rest of their lives, nothing ever living up to it.

    What do you think?

That depends. For every person it is different. I am hyped because it is Star Wars and can't wait. I have no expectations, there is nothing i want or need from the movie. I only ask one thing: That it will enterain me. And with I have seen so far it succeeds at the moment.
So yeah. Going to the movie with an objective mind is best thing one can do. Forget the prequels, forget the OT and base the movie on its own worth (if that makes sense).

I can only really speak for how I feel. 6 months ago I was so excited it was the movie I wanted to see the most in my whole life, It still is. But, I started questioning and now I can't believe it's finally December, I'm not as pumped as I was and that's a good thing. I wanna go in the theatre an empty vessel and have the movie take me through emotions instead of being hyped and if something doesn't go the way I built in my head it would get me down. If I feel happy, excited, thrilled, or sad while watching I want it to be because the movie made me feel that way not because of the hype I put on the movie. I could guess and say maybe the hype is too much for some people but it is understandable because we are so close to the release. Yet I feel like this movie is special and could enthrall you into making you forget what you previously thought and be putty in it's hands to emotionally mould you through every moment of it.

after watching the interviews with JJ iv noticed that he is very careful not to oversell the movie. he wants us to experience the movie and make up our own minds about it. everyone involved is excited as hell to be a part of the franchise. I really feel that enthusiasm will carry through in the movie. most of us on this site have high expectations for the release.

you have to keep in mind that disney is banking on the fact that this is the first movie that will be relaunching the franchise. after this, we have a new star wars movie every year. in order to keep those customers coming, this needs to be one of the best star wars movies ever made, or else they risk putting the franchise in jeopardy.

I don't have a lot of expectations, I know I'm going to like it no matter what. There are probably many things I'm going to criticize but I'll take the good with the bad and I'm going to love them just like the PT and OT.
Having said that, I'm worried about JJ's mental health after this movie. With the amount of hate and bashing that George gets for the prequels even when all this marvelous universe is his own creation, I can't imagine how bad it could get for JJ if he somehow manages to not meet the expectations of certain fans.

I think the bolded part is the most worrying for me... there are actually people who will hate the movie if SPECIFIC things like all of the original three appearing in a scene together don't happen. I feel like some of those fans want a safe nostalgia-fest, where I'd much rather have something that takes risks and is unexpected, even if that means alienating some people.

Well said... everyone involved knows they have to kick off this new era with a quality movie in order for people to be invested at all. My main concern is the possibility of there being too much nostalgia-bait over a good story, and I hope I'm proven wrong.

The one major instance where the reality was far better than the expectation.

I voted yes... but that really depends on who you are talking to.

People who are expecting to see Han, Luke, and Leia together again, or who expect Finn to begin training as a Jedi, or who expect an original story, may be disappointed.

those who have been reading the site for a long time remember when Harrison Ford broke his leg and the production was put on hold for a while. JJ said that during that time, they started reevaluation the script. they talked about things that could have been interpreted as overly fan service. They made the appropriate changes to ensure that this movie stands alone, and does not require knowing the past story, although all the canon material is important and does give valuable context, it wont be necessary for new fans.

I... don't think so. I think that people have for the most part learned from all the hype in '99. No matter what anyone personally thinks about TPM, there's no denying that the incredible hype around its release didn't do it any favors in the fan's eyes.

I'm right there with you. I've told several of my friends that even if the movie isn't good, it's going to be good. There are very few things that JJ and co. can do to make me dislike this film (and I'm pretty sure Rey and Finn don't have a duet that they sing about wanting to belong).;)

I agree what everybody expects in every movie doesn't always happen, I've found that happens with most movies I've seen.

The best way I have learned to approach sequels of a great franchise is don't expect it to be the greatest movie. That doesn't mean it won't be a great movie or a movie that pleases you in the end. If you expect the greatest, the only thing left is down.

This maybe hard but approach it like an original movie you've never seen before and your curiosity may override expectations. You're intruiged with the movie cause the trailers got you interested to see it, but you don't how it will turn out because its an original work.

    John Carter for example

The book is amazing but onscreen it is terrible and it just didn't work. I was expecting a blockbuster

Ouch...I better hope not because to be a sucess the movie and especially the story have to appeal to many people outside of fandom.

I don't mind the use of the monomyth formula (e.g. Campbell's hero journey) but I better hope that they way the elements are put together is fresh and original.
