Even since I was a little kid I have been fasinated by the sea and most things related to it. I love going on snorkling adventures and I have even taken a few pics of undersea life. Swimming along so many different kinds of fish, looking at the beautiful coral reefs and learning what sea animals you can touch and which of them either burn your hand of either squirt foul smelling white liquid that will leave your hand stinking for days are just some of the wonders of exploring the sea.

I love watching undersea documentaries and learning of new species that are discovered and I also love strolling through the beach and picking up sea shells of all shapes and sizes. So that brings me to the question, are there others here in the Cantina who love the ocean as well? And fans of snorkling or diving here? Do any of you love the wonderous creatures of the sea?

If this is the case then how about posting some cool pics of sea creatures you love or maybe even find strange or creepy! They can be any pic of marine life so how about it?

To get things rolling I will start by posting three pics of some creatures I find really awesome so here goes:

    1-Cheerleader Crab
    Screen+shot+2010-10-23+at+4.20.29+PM2.png.jpg
Lybia Edmondsoni also known as Boxer Crab, Pom Pom Crab or Cheerleader Crab is a funky type of little crab that naturally doesn't have much defense. He lacks the strenth of other types of crabs and he doesn't have a strong shell either so what does this little fellow do to make up for that? He sticks anemones to his little claws and uses them as both a means of defence from predators and as a way of gathering food!

    2-Wobbegong Shark
    wobbegong.jpg
    Wobbegong-Shark-2.jpg
Wobbegong is the name that's given to many types of bottom dwelling sharks that are also called Carpet Sharks. These beautiful creatures come with many types of paterns and they have great camouflage abilities which they use to munch on many fish and sea creatures.

    3-Coconut Crab
    giant coconut crab.jpg
    axcSx4r.jpg
    the-biggest-land-living-arthropod-in-the-world-coconut-crab-in-tree.jpg
The first time I saw the pic of that Coconut Crab on the trash can I quickly thought it was photoshopped yet after some research I discovered that the Giant Coconut Crab, Robber Crab, Palm Thief or Birgus Latro as it is known was in fact a real animal. Just seeing the size of this crab and knowing that it is a relative of the small Hermit Crabs is just mind blowing! I know there are lots of huge crabs and that the King Crab is enormous but a gargantuan Hermit Crab? That was just to much!

Being next to ocean is a wonderful thing. I love the smell of the sea, the crashing waves and the view of the horizon. There's something mysterious about the ocean.

I would post a pic of a great white shark and a blue whale, they are my favourite ocean animals/fish. That giant crab tho...sheeesh!

Oh my gosh I really love your post Merman as I too love the ocean! The sea is such a marvelous place with so many hidden mysteries and so many wonders. I love sea life just as you do and I find it amazing that they keep finding so many new creatures some of which defy imagination. As Dewi said, the smell of the sea is wonderful and viewing the horizon and hearing the crashing of the waves is something I love as well as taking my shoes of and walking by the shore by sundown as the waves hit my feet is so romantic!

I love sea shells as well and I get super excited when I find sea dollars:

Other creatures I find fascinating are these:

    Mandarinfish

There are many many more but I will just post these for now so that my post doesn't turn into a gargantuan one! :)

Wonderful post Merman and yes, here you have a fellow ocean lover! I love snorkling and discovering so many new things. Be it having a romantic stroll with your loved one as the waves hit your feet or just sitting there and spending some time together hearing the sounds of the waves, the ocean is just magical. Each time I go snorkling is like a new adventure and you never know what you will find. Apart from the beautiful aspects and the wonderous sea life I also love seeing pictures and reading about shipwrecks. Greatest of all being:
    creaciontitacnic.jpg
    RMS Titanic

The story of the Titanic is such a tragic one and even to this day I love watching documentaries about it. Sea life in the Abyss is another thing I love and here are a few pics of the beautiful horrors that live in that dark mysterious world:

All of those Anglers, Polychaete Worms, Jellys, Fangtooth ect are just so spooky and awesome that they look like something that came out of the minds of H.P. Lovecraft or Stephen King. There are many wonders down there and some are just so odd that they defy logic like the good old Pigbutt Worm!

Wonderful post as well Amanaman though I have to say that the Pigbutt Worm is creepy as hell! To see such an odd round thing and know it's a worm is just crazy! Apart from a butt I can also say it looks like another part of the human anatomy but I will refrain from saying any more. Here's a couple of other favorites of mine!

Well I just came back from my holidays at the coast (as every year), and I studied biology at one time, so I like this thread and the fine crustacean pics very much (I assume some of them would also taste well).

Wonderful thread Merman! I love the ocean as well and there are just so many creatures there that are so out of this world! Those lobsters are crazy! Who could have imagined that there are so many odd looking ones and I agree with Star Dude because I would also love to eat a few as I imagine that they must taste great!

To continue with your cool thread I will post some awesome (and crazy) looking Starfish as these beautiful creatures also come in bizzare shapes and forms!
