Milo Thatch a Linguist, Translator, Cartograpic, Janitor at the Smithsonian Institute has discovered an error in the translation of a centuries old Norse text. The translation of the Norse text has led historians to believe that the Shepherd's Journal the key to finding Atlantis resides in Ireland. After comparing the Norse text to the runes of a viking shield, Milo Thatch was able to ascertain the correct translation. Milo Thatch believes that the Atlantean people possessed advanced technology, a power source more advanced than steam, coal, and combustion engines. Milo's proposal is to obtain the Shepherd's Journal and use it to find Atlantis and retrieve the power source. Later Milo reminisces on the memories of his grandfather when he receives a letter from the board of the Smithsonian Institute that the time of the meeting for his proposal has been changed from 4:30 pm to 3:30 pm, causing him to miss his meeting. Furious with the event that just took place, Milo tracks down one of the board members to present his proposal. After being disregarded by the board member Milo threatens to leave by presenting a letter of resignation. Milo is advised not to throw away his career like his grandfater did, and not to waste his potential on chasing fairy tales. Feeling defeated Milo returns to his home and finds an intruder.

 

She addresses herself as Helga Sinclair and that she is acting on behalf of her employer who has a proposition for Milo.

 

Milo and Helga travel to her employer's estate where Milo learns the name of her employer. Milo enters the Whitmore estate and comes across a portrait of his grandfather standing next to another man. Milo encounters and is greeted by the other man in the portrait Mr. Whitmore, Whitmore informs Milo that he and Milo's grandfather were long time friends and colleagues. Whitmore then tells Milo that his deceased grandfather has left him a package. Milo is shocked by the content of the package which appears to be the long lost Shepherd's Journal. Milo assures Whitmore that it is the genuine Shepherd's Journal when Whitmore asked what he wanted to do with it? Milo makes the statement that he'll do whatever it takes to find Atlantis even if he has to rent a rowboat. Whitmore makes the remark that Milo said exactly what he wanted to hear, and that he'll be funding Milo's exploration for the lost city of Atlantis. Atlantis The Lost Empire (2001) is a Disney movie about the search for Atlantis. Directed by Gary Trousdale & Kirk Wise (Beauty and the Best 1991) and stars an excellent voice cast such as, Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future 1985) James Garner (The Rockford Files 1974) Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek 1966) Jim Varney (Ernest Goes To Camp 1987) Don Novello (Saturday Night Live 1975) and more. This movie blends hand drawn animation and computer generated effects, it is also one of the first hand drawn major animated Disney movies to move away from some of the classic Disney archetypes. With a great musical score, James Newton Howard and well done sound design with interesting cinematography and action scenes. It's an underappreciated action adventure movie and worth a watch.
